Oral Cancer Awareness Month Spurs Smileboston Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry to Share Important, Lifesaving Tips

(PRWEB) April 25, 2013

Steven D. Spitz, DMD, founder of Smileboston Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry, wants to save lives and increase awareness during Aprils oral cancer awareness month. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, oral cancer causes over 8,000 deaths yearly, killing roughly one person per hour, 24 hours a day. Historically, the death rate associated with oral cancer is particularly high due to this type of cancer being routinely discovered late in its development. To increase awareness and help put an end to this deadly cycle, Dr. Spitz is sharing specific warning signs to look for.

Nearly 42,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year. An oral cancer check should be a routine part of every hygiene visit, said Dr. Steven Spitz of Smileboston Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry. Early detection, diagnosis and treatment are absolutely the key to survival and recovery.

Waters Edge Dermatology Offers Complimentary Skin Cancer Screenings in May for Skin Cancer Awareness Month

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (PRWEB) May 06, 2013

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. During Skin Cancer Awareness Month this May, Floridians can get free skin cancer screenings at several Waters Edge Dermatology clinics.

Free skin cancer screenings are by appointment and take place at the following Water's Edge clinics: Sebring on May 7 and May 28; Vero Beach on May 16; Lighthouse Point and Delray Beach on May 20; and Palm Bay on May 23.

According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer accounts for nearly half of all cancers in the United States, with one in five people having some form of skin cancer. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, will account for more than 76,600 cases of skin cancer in 2013, resulting in roughly 9,000 deaths annually.

Its so unfortunate when a patient waits too long to be screened and melanoma is found way too late, as its very treatable if found early, says Justin Platzer, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs skin cancer surgeon at Waters Edge Dermatology.

Darlene Moore of West Palm Beach, Fla., echoes Dr. Platzers sentiment of the importance of diagnosing melanoma early. During a regular skin cancer screening at Waters Edge Dermatology, Shanna Stone, ARNP, saw a few areas of concern on Ms. Moores ear and arm and took biopsies. Ms. Moore was diagnosed with Stage 1 melanoma on her arm and basal cell carcinoma on her ear.

The basal cell, frankly, I wasnt as concerned about, says Ms. Moore. Dr. Platzer reassured me that Mohs surgery was very effective for basal cell carcinoma and he was able to get it all. But I was really concerned about melanoma, because my brother-in-law died of melanoma.

Surgery is the best way to remove early melanomas, with later stages usually requiring more extensive treatment, such as radiation and chemotherapy. Mohs surgery saves the greatest amount of healthy tissue, appears to reduce the rate of local recurrence and has the highest overall cure rate about 94 percent to 99 percent of any treatment for squamous cell carcinoma. And generally, Mohs surgery is 98 percent or better for basal cell carcinoma, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

As the old saying goes, An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, says Dr. Platzer. Say no to tanning beds and always wear sunscreen. And, if you live in sunny Florida, it is critical to have regular skin cancer screeningsand theres no better time than this month, while were offering screenings for free.

Many of Waters Edge Dermatology clinics are open Saturdays and late during the workweek. To make an appointment, visit http://www.WeDerm.com and fill out the online appointment form, email info(at)WeDerm(dot)com or call 561-694-9493 for more information.

Skin Cancer Awareness Month: An Unlikely Patient

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 15, 2013

When 60-year-old Edna Mayorga first accepted a job with the large cancer care provider, Los Angeles Cancer Institute, a division of 21st Century Oncology of California, she did not know she would eventually become a patient. In November 2012, the 16-year veteran Patient Care Coordinator was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma skin cancer on her nose.

It started with just a little bump. I thought it was a pimple, but it just kind of grew. Sometimes it would go away and get flat, other times it was like a little bump, and occasionally it would bleed, Mayorga said. That was my sign that something was not right.

A visit to the dermatologist confirmed her suspicions: basal cell carcinoma, the most common cancer in the United States with 2.8 million people diagnosed each year. While this cancer is rarely fatal, if left untreated, basal cell carcinoma can grow into surrounding facial structures. Her dermatologist first referred her to a surgeon to perform Mohs surgery, essentially cutting the cancerous tumor out of her nose.

I evaluated the benefits and drawbacks to the Mohs surgery and the cosmetic effects would be a nightmare for me, says Mayorga. I would end up with a flap then three scars on my nose. I knew there had to be alternative treatments with better cosmetic outcomes. That's when I talked to my own doctors about radiation therapy.

After intense research, she made the decision to undergo radiation therapy with Board Certified Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Daniel Schiffner. Her workdays began to include her regular duties as well as radiation therapy at the Los Angeles Cancer Institute, a division of 21st Century Oncology of California.

I felt confident about starting radiation therapy because I work here and I know it works, she says. But the first time when they close that door, I was a little scared. Dr. Schiffner helped me through and after that, it was no big deal. It was easy and fast with no pain, no poking, or cutting. It was actually a really good experience.

Over time, the basal cell skin cancer was eliminated, leaving Edna cancer free, but more vocal than ever about skin cancer prevention and awareness and a greater appreciation for her patients.

I see things from the patients point of view even more now. Ive always been at the front desk, encouraging them to have faith in themselves and promote positive thinking and positive feedback, she says. Now I can give them more and better feedback because Ive had the experience. That makes me feel even better knowing that I can give my point of view for the patients.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and Edna Mayorga is committed to raising mindfulness of early detection and prevention of skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma.

I want people not to be afraid of their health. If you see something that is unusual, take care of it; get it checked out. Dont be scared if you are diagnosed with basal cell because it can be cured. And dont be scared of radiation, it works, especially on the face. Consider your options, this is a different way to treat skin cancer with minimal scarring and no cutting. I would highly recommend radiation treatment.

New FDA Proposed Tanning Bed Regulations Push For Improved Warnings During National Skin Cancer Awareness Month

San Diego, California (PRWEB) May 17, 2013

In a recent article published by the New York Times, new proposed regulations for tanning beds in the United States was examined. Expert dermatologist Sabrina Fabi, MD, believes the new regulations could be integral in raising awareness pertaining to the damaging effects of indoor tanning.

Tanning beds may seem like a great alternative to sunbathing, but the same harmful UV rays that are present in sunlight are also found in the lights of tanning beds. This is extremely dangerous for teenagers and adults and increases their likelihood of developing skin cancer, said board certified San Diego dermatologist Sabrina Fabi, MD.

The new FDA regulations that have been proposed would require labels to be affixed to tanning beds warning that use by minors should be restricted. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 28 million Americans use tanning beds, and of that number, 2 million are under the age of 18. This regulation proposal would be a first step in the direction of restricting the use of tanning beds by minors. The AAD has also stated that the risk of developing melanoma increases by 75 percent for those who have been exposed to ultraviolet radiation from indoor tanning.

Individuals who use tanning beds thoughtlessly expose themselves to UV rays that can lead to precancerous lesions, and eventually, melanoma, one of the most deadly forms of skin cancer, said Dr. Mitchel Goldman, incoming President of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

At GBFG&F, there are many treatments that can be tailored to patients experiencing precancerous lesions and damage caused by excessive UV ray exposure. One of the most effective treatments available to those who suffer from sun-damaged skin is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). PDT is a non-invasive treatment that utilizes Levulan or Metvixia, topical photosensitizing agents that are activated by light to create a photochemical reaction. PDT can accurately treat precancerous lesions and sun damage while not damaging the surrounding tissue. Fractionated resurfacing and Intense Pulsed Light are other laser treatments that can be used for sun-damaged skin. Both of these treatments are highly recommended by dermatologists world-wide.

When combatting damage caused by the sun, two of the most painless and safe procedures available at our practice are Photodynamic Therapy and Fractionated Laser Resurfacing in San Diego. Both procedures can be performed relatively quickly and each session can help to restore skin damage that has taken years to accumulate, said respected San Diego dermatologist Dr. Fabi.

Goldman, Butterwick, Fitzpatrick, Groff & Fabi: Cosmetic Laser Dermatology is a world-renowned aesthetic center in San Diego, California made up of five internationally distinguished skin care experts, including Mitchel P. Goldman, MD, Kimberly Butterwick, MD, Richard Fitzpatrick, MD, William Groff, DO, and Sabrina Fabi, MD. As highly acclaimed dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons who have contributed hundreds of medical papers to journals and medical textbooks as well as pioneered multiple key procedures, the services provided F are among the most technologically advanced to date. With more than 38 different lasers, the award winning San Diego dermatologists of GBFG&F are able to provide patients with the most comprehensive selection of skincare treatments in the United States.

NJ Top Docs Weigh in on Importance of Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Scotch Plains, New Jersey (PRWEB) May 31, 2013

When the beautiful month of May comes around each year, flowers begin to bloom, children resume playing outdoors, and the shores prepare to fill with scantily clad beach-goers. While many people remember to bring their flip-flops, fashionably floppy hats, and their sunglasses to these outdoor activities, many forget to bring the most important item: sunscreen.

NJ Top Docs approved skin cancer specialists, Dr. Glenn Kolansky, Dr. Sabatino Ciatti, Dr. Jonathan Gold, Dr. Patricia Iannotta, and Dr. Linda Susan Marcus of various counties in New Jersey, would like to bring awareness to those who dont know about the serious effects of the lack of sun protection during this special month of Skin Cancer Awareness. Between these five physicians, tens of thousands of Mohs surgeries and other dermatologic surgical procedures have been performed in just the last ten years. Diagnosing and treating skin cancer is what occupies 90% of their time as doctors.

With the rising popularity of tanning bed usage and unprotected sun care routines, it should come to no surprise that ...over the last thirty years, more people have developed skin cancer than all other cancers combined, Dr. Gold says, Twenty percent of Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime, and when one reaches the age of sixty-five years and beyond, that the percentage jumps from 40% to 50%. Ten minutes in a sun bed matches the cancer-causing effects of 10 minutes in the Mediterranean summer sun (http://www.skincancer.org). Dr. Kolansky states, Prevention is key - sunscreens, sun protective clothing, and sunglasses. Early detection of Melanoma can be life-saving. Avoid tanning beds. Dr. Iannotta says, Get your birthday suit checked in your birthday month! As the incidence of skin cancer has increased, so has public awareness of common preventative measures such as daily use of broad spectrum sunscreen and avoidance of both the midday sun and tanning salons. However, what many may overlook is the importance of a yearly skin exam by a dermatologist and a monthly self skin exam. Those that use tanning beds should certainly reconsider.

All five physicians use Dr. Frederick Mohs technique of mapping by color coding the tissue with dye and removing the skin cancer in layers to ensure that the tissue left behind is cancer-free. Dr. Ciatti shares, We process the tissue in the office at the time of surgery, so there is no suturing done until we know that the tumor is out. Mohs surgery eliminates the possibility of unknowingly leaving some of the cancer behind. We are trying to get the smallest margin possible in order to preserve normal tissue and avoid cosmetic disfigurement, Dr. Ciatti states. As the most exact and precise method of tumor removal, it minimizes the chance of re-growth and lessens the potential for scarring or disfigurement. Dr. Marcus says, Skin cancers are treated in a variety of ways, depending upon factors such as type, location, and age of the person. She says skin cancers can be cut out, burned off, frozen, treated with topical applications, radiation, oral therapies for advanced stages, and Mohs surgery. Dr. Marcus elaborates, A board certified dermatologist will diagnose, biopsy, and recommend the appropriate therapy for YOU. Self-diagnosis should never be an option.

There are many preventable steps to take to live safer under the sun. Dr. Kolansky says, It is strongly recommended to perform self-skin exams on a monthly basis and to visit a Board Certified Dermatologist one to two times a year (depending on skin type and number of moles and sun exposure). It is important to recognize any moles (nevi) that change in size, shape, color, elevate or bleed and should be examined by a dermatologist. The Skin Cancer Foundations recommended prevention tips include: seeking shade between 10 a.m. and 4 pm., covering up with clothing and UV-blocking sunglasses, applying 1 ounce of sunscreen to your body 30 minutes before going outside, keeping newborns out of the sun, and examining your skin each month. Dr. Gold adds, When looking for which sunscreens to buy, look for three things: The number of the SPF The higher, the greater the protection, make sure it blocks out both Ultraviolet UV A rays & UV B rays, as well as look for sunscreens with the words water resistant or sweat proof, which increases a sunscreens performance.

These highly praised and experienced doctors recommend unlimited doses of outdoor activities and fun in the sun with family and friends this season, but to apply sunscreen and a strict sun care regimen to your daily lives. Dr. Iannotta would like to emphasize that Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to skin cancer and since it is often the easiest cancer to detect without any high tech tests, why not take the few minutes it takes. It may save your life!

Growing Health Awareness and Focus on Personal Grooming Drives the Personal Care Appliances Market, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.

San Jose, California (PRWEB) February 18, 2013

Follow us on LinkedIn Global market for personal care appliances market is expected to grow at a steady pace in the near term driven by improving economic environment and increasing consumer confidence. As opposed to the developed western markets, fast emerging economies in Asia-Pacific and Latin America are poised for faster growth in the next few years.

Though macroeconomic factors determine the extent of demand for various types of electrical grooming devices, dynamics of the personal care appliances market are shaped to a large extent by trends in personal grooming in men, women and children. For instance, while grooming routines of men and women influence sales of body shavers and hair styling appliances, childrens preferences are setting standards in the battery-operated toothbrushes markets. Despite the fragile economic environment due to the eurozone crisis and resultant weakening of consumer confidence, demand for personal care appliances remains modest given the perpetual obsession of men and women to look young and beautiful.

With consumers increasingly becoming conscious about their health and looks, a wide range of personal care appliances have become part of their daily routines. Despite the fact that consumers traded down to low-priced alternatives and private label products during recession, the potential for high-end products remains high among consumers looking for advanced technologies and innovative features. Product innovation has emerged as a key strategy to counter the sliding purchases in the market. Superior product quality, effective marketing strategies and efficient distribution networks also ensure a fair chance of survival for the manufacturers in the increasing competitive environment.

As stated by the new market research report on Personal Care Appliances, the United States represents the single largest market worldwide. Increasing emphasis on personal appearance and grooming and growing awareness about oral hygiene represent major demand drivers for various types of personal care appliances. The growing trend towards in-house styling has led Americans to seek electrical appliances that are convenient and easy-to-use. With manufacturers incorporating new and advanced features into the products, consumers are being lured into purchasing them. Health-conscious baby boomers are also enhancing demand for healthcare products such as electric toothbrushes. While US remains a major market for personal care appliances, future growth is anticipated from the emerging economies of Asia-Pacific and Latin America. Burgeoning population, a large middle class segment with expanding disposable incomes, and globalization of trade activities have positioned developing economies such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC) as major consumer markets for personal care appliances.

Hair dryers and curling irons are well accepted in the market, while massagers, trimmers, and electric toothbrushes are gaining popularity worldwide. Hair clippers, hair setters, and shaving systems with technologically advanced features are penetrating the market, among all age groups and genders. In terms of unit sales, Hair Care Appliances represents the largest segment in the global personal care appliances market, with Curling Irons, Hair Dryers, and Hair Straighteners being the most popular products. However, compact hair dryers for traveling use are also increasingly being favored. Fastest growth is expected from Oral Care Appliances segment, led by an aging population, increasing awareness about oral hygiene and the launch of advanced product offerings. The market for Hair Removal Appliances, particularly electric shavers for both men and women, is driven primarily by the focus on innovation. Further, brand building initiatives, and marketing and promotional campaigns also foster growth in the hair removal products market.

Personal care electrical appliances market is witnessing intense competition due to the presence of a limited number of players. A handful of well-known brands dominate various segments of personal care electrics market such as oral care, grooming, and hair care products. Major players profiled in the report include Church & Dwight Co. Inc., Colgate-Palmolive, Conair Corporation, Groupe SEB, Helen of Troy Limited, Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V., Panasonic Corporation, Procter & Gamble, Braun GmbH, Remington Products Company, Wahl Clipper Corporation, and Waterpik Technologies, Inc.

The research report titled Personal Care Appliances: A Global Strategic Business Report announced by Global Industry Analysts Inc., provides a comprehensive review of market trends, issues, drivers, company profiles, mergers, acquisitions and other strategic industry activities. The report provides market estimates and projections for all major geographic markets such as the US, Canada, Japan, Europe (France, Germany, Italy, UK, and Rest of Europe), Asia-Pacific, Middle East, and Latin America. Product segments analyzed include Hair Care Appliances (Curling Brushes, Curling Irons, Hair Clippers, Hair Dryers, Hair Setters and Hair Straighteners); Oral Care Appliances (Electric Toothbrushes, Oral Irrigators, and Plaque Removers); Hair Removal Appliances (Mens Shavers, Womens Shavers, Epilators, and Trimmers (Beard & Mustache)); and Other Personal Care Appliances (Heating Pads, Whirlpool Baths (Portable), and Massagers).

Skin Cancer Awareness - Protect Your Skin While Outdoors

(PRWEB) May 22, 2013

Big Game Gear, Outdoor Gear Company, advises others to take care of their skin not only during Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Don't forget about protecting skin while enjoying the great outdoors. While enjoying the beautiful outdoor activities this summer, protect from skin cancer by seeking shade, wearing sunglasses, a hat, and sun-protective clothing, and using sunscreen.

When having fun with outside activities, it is easy to forget how important it is to protect from the sun. Unprotected skin can be damaged by the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays in as little as 15 minutes. Yet it can take up to 12 hours for skin to show the full effect of sun exposure.

Even if it's cool and cloudy, outdoor gear enthusiasts still need protection. UV rays, not the temperature, do the damage. Clouds do not block UV rays; they filter themand sometimes only a little bit. Remember to plan ahead, and keep sun protection handy in car, bag, or a new Big Game Gear backpack.

Any change in the color of skin after time outsidewhether sunburn or suntanindicates damage from UV rays. Using a tanning bed causes damage to skin, just like the sun.

BalanceME Weight Loss Camps Join Nation's Doctors in Stress Awareness Month

Asheville, NC (PRWEB) April 09, 2013

BalanceME, leading summer weight loss camps for treatment of overweight and obese, joins the nations healthcare professionals in bringing awareness to the negative effects of stress during National Stress Awareness Month.

The American Institute of Stress reports that up to 90% of doctors visits are related to stress. During stressful situations the body releases a stress hormone called cortisol. Prolonged overexposure to cortisol increases the risk of heart disease, depression, and a variety of health related illnesses including obesity, An inability to manage stress successfully also leads to low motivation, in turn creating low activity lifestyles.

At BalanceME summer weight loss camps campers lower their stress by learning healthy coping skills in individual and group counseling sessions. These counseling sessions allow campers to address the emotional components that often accompany obesity while also building camper confidence and motivation. By pairing counseling with healthy eating and exercise, BalanceME campers lose weight and improve their overall health as well, thereby lowering some of the stress placed on their bodies.

Many of our campers suffer from depression and a variety of emotional challenges that are linked to numerous life stressors and manifest through weight gain, say John Gordon, BalanceME CEO. Being able to teach our campers healthy coping skills for stress give them tools for the rest of their lives, improving their overall health and quality of life.

BalanceME teaches campers to manage stress effectively by supplementing unhealthy coping skills like overeating or excessive sleeping with healthy coping skills like exercise, talking with a friend, and new interests and hobbies. BalanceME also uses an approach called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which allows campers to connect their thoughts with their behaviors. These skills are effective for campers beyond their time at summer weight loss camp and useful for stress management in school life, school, family life, and adulthood.

We are proud to support Stress Awareness Month by helping our campers learn lifelong copying skills, continued Mr. Gordon, Combined with our camper's weight loss, these coping skills form a powerful combination for dealing with stress.

Bella Reina Spa Showcases Ways to Take the Stress Out of Every Day Life During National Stress Awareness Month

Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) April 18, 2013

Bella Reina Spa reveals some very simple spa treatments that will help with daily stress triggers. Being aware of stress is probably one of the biggest issues in dealing with stress-related illnesses and skin issues.

The skin, the body's largest organ, is greatly affected by long-term stress through the lack of cortisol, increased inflammation and depletion of hyaluronic acid. The combination of inflammation and cortisol leads to the breakdown of collagen and elastin resulting in fine lines and wrinkles. Minimizing stress will help the skin look younger, and the spa considers stress reduction a necessary part of anti-aging.

Simple treatments to take the stress out of life, include aromatherapy massage, 20-minute reflexology treatment, or a relaxing spa facial. A body spa treatment, like the Body Peel can assist with the dehydration of the skin and the loss of collagen. In addition, the spa recommends eating a low-glycemic diet to lower the inflammation in the body and taking the Skin Health which increases the hyaluronic acid in the skin.

Bella Reina Spa suggests a 30-minute spa treatment once a month to assist the body in coping with stress and the dangers of stress. Yourwellness Magazine Follows Up Explorers Obesity Awareness Campaign

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 22 April 2013

In an innovative way to raise obesity awareness, Saudi explorer Youssef Al-Ruwaily has made a journey on foot from Makkah to Al-Aflaj, aiming to encourage Saudis to exercise to reduce obesity. According to WHO, worldwide obesity has nearly doubled since 1980, with 65% of the world's population living in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight. WHO also notes that more than 40 million children under the age of five were overweight in 2011, but this, and obesity, is preventable.

WHOs Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health provides a framework for their 2008-2013 action plan; a roadmap to establish and strengthen initiatives for the surveillance, prevention and management of Noncommunicable Diseases, such as obesity. 2011s Political Declaration of the High Level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases committed to advance the implementation of the WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, including the introduction of policies and actions aimed at promoting healthy diets and increasing physical activity in the entire population.

With WHOs and Youssef Al-Ruwailys strategy in mind, Yourwellness Magazine took a closer look at the obesity epidemic, aiming to raise awareness and give readers the facts about obesity. According to the article, Its a common misconception that only the developed world suffers from issues with obesity. As fast food becomes cheaper it becomes available worldwide. In Dubai, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, weight loss clinics have performed more than two hundred surgeries recently. A lot of the patients have been citizens but several have travelled in from outside the country.

Yourwellness Magazine explained that obesity comes with a whole variety of health complications of its own, raising the risk of heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and asthma. Weight loss surgery is a risky step to take, but when these complications are more threatening than surgery itself, and obese patients have exhausted all other options, Yourwellness Magazine noted that weight loss surgery may be a way to tackle the obesity epidemic.

Life Without Obesity: An Awareness Rehabilitation Program

San Jose, Costa Rica (PRWEB) May 08, 2013

What is Compulsive Overeating?

Compulsive overeating is considered an addiction and an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Individuals suffering from this condition participate in recurrent episodes of impulsive eating, during which they may feel out of control followed by feelings of guilt and depression.

People who are addicted to food, like people who suffer from other addictions have trouble stopping their behavior, even if they want.

Those struggling with compulsive behaviors and who suffer from other kinds of addiction often find that they overcome one addiction and develop another one months or even years later. This is especially true of individuals who have undergone bariatric surgery as they generally try to resolve their issues with compulsive overeating.

What many studies have shown:

Studies have identified an increased risk of alcohol and drug use in these patients (The findings were published online Oct. 15, 2012 at http://archsurg.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1379763) even though the core issue motivating compulsive eating or addictive behaviors is not the substance or the conduct, but the reason why it is done. After bariatric surgery, if the patient does not address his or her emotional, cognitive and behavioral issues, there is a significant increase in the risk of further addictive behavior.

"Be aware of symptoms of substance abuse if you have undergone bariatric surgery, including changes in your relationship with drugs and alcohol," said Dr. Alexis Conason, a researcher at the New York Obesity Nutrition Research Center in New York City.

During Celiac Awareness Month, Nutrition Expert Keri Glassman Encourages People with Celiac Disease to Find a Fiber Alternative like Konsyl Original Formula

Easton, MD (PRWEB) May 22, 2013

According to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder effecting up to 3 million people in the U.S.(1) Celiac is triggered by gluten, causing damage to the small intestine and mal-absorption of nutrients(2). To protect the small intestine and prevent symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, weight loss and vitamin deficiency, people with celiac disease must abide by a gluten-free diet. While there are many gluten-free foods that celiac sufferers can eat, living with a gluten-free diet often means taking out common sources of fiber like cereal and whole wheat bread. This means those with celiac disease will need to look for other ways to consume adequate amounts of fiber an important part of any well-rounded diet.

People suffering with celiac disease are often very aware of the nutrient makeup and ingredients in the foods theyre eating, and for that reason are very health conscious. Having celiac disease makes it even more important to pay attention to your digestive health including getting adequate fiber on a daily basis, explains Keri Glassman, RD. Supplementing a gluten-free diet with an all-natural, gluten-free psyllium fiber supplement like Konsyl Original Formula is a great way to ensure youre getting the daily fiber thats needed to stay healthy.

According to Glassman, there are numerous health benefits that fiber provides including weight management and promoting digestive health. Additionally, fiber helps protect the heart by lowering blood cholesterol and can help manage blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends 25 grams of fiber per day for women and 38 grams of fiber per day for men in order to experience fibers health benefits.

Konsyl is the number one doctor-recommended, all-natural psyllium fiber supplement in the country.
