Texas Pediatrician States New Research Linking Skim Milk to Childhood Obesity

Austin, TX (PRWEB) April 01, 2013

Dr. Marta Katalenas, noted pediatrician and author of The Step Up Diet: From Scratch... The Quality, Quantity, and Timing Solution to Childhood Obesity, is advising parents to rethink their use skim milk as tool to combat childhood obesity. Dr. Katalenas notes that whole milk and proper nutrition, along with the quantity, quality, and timing of meals, is essential to a childs diet.

There isnt a single culprit ingredient that has caused the obesity epidemic, but we clearly eat too many carbohydrates since sugar is added to everything, stated Dr. Katalenas. To fight obesity you need proper nutrition, which includes drinking milk three times a day, and you need to consider Q-Q-T: the quality of food, the quantity you serve and the timing of meals.

According to a new research study on childhood obesity in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, milk is a good source of calcium and vitamin D, but low-fat milk may not be useful in promoting weight loss. In the past The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association recommended that children consume low-fat milk after age two to avoid weight gain, but new research shows that children who drank skim or low-fat milk showed more weight gain than children who drank whole milk.

These findings are no surprise to Dr. Katalenas. She concludes that children who drink whole milk feel fuller, and therefore eat fewer calories in a day than children who drink skim milk. She adds that in addition to calcium for bone development, children also need fat for neural development. The brain is made up of pure cholesterol and needs fat to create the myelin lining of nerves to protect the body from nervous disorders, such as multiple sclerosis.

Some schools offer chocolate milk as an alternative to whole milk, since it contains the same amount of calcium. However, even fat-free chocolate milk contains 27 grams of sugar, which simply substitutes more calories with no nutritional value.

I advise all my patients to drink milk, and there are benefits to the fat in whole milk to protect against neurological disorders, but if they favor low-fat milk, I dont discourage it, stated Dr. Katalenas. However, my advice about nutrition goes far beyond what type of milk to drink. The origin of the obesity epidemic resides in profound changes in our lifestyles and how we make our daily food choices.

Lean On Life Supports New Research for Self-Guided Treatment of Childhood Obesity

TORONTO, ON (PRWEB) April 03, 2013

Lean On Life, a leading healthy lifestyle website with the latest on weight loss, nutrition and fitness is supporting a recent study looking into guided self-help in fighting childhood obesity.

Usually, intervention methods for childhood obesity involve family-based treatment (including consultations, exercise, nutrition counselling, and time-consuming clinical visits). Given that many families dont have the time, resources, or money to afford these forms of treatment, a new self-guided approach would be beneficial.

A recent study led by Kerri Boutelle, PhD, at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine has found that a self-guided program for obese children and parents is a viable option for treating obesity, especially with added clinical guidance.

The study, conducted by Boutelle and her colleagues, examined 50 overweight or obese children between the ages of 8 and 12 over a five-month period, and then followed up with the participants six months later.

In the study, participants were given a manual and asked to read through a chapter a week. Every other week participants came into the clinic and met with an interventionist for a short period to discuss progress and any issues. Results of the study showed a significant decrease in participants BMI with sustained results six months later.

Based on these findings, Tal Brodsky, Lean Life Coach at Lean On Life suggests that for families that do not have the financial or time resources, a self-guided approach is a good substitute to clinical help.

Generally, the children and families that are most hard-hit by overweight and obesity are the ones that cant afford to get professional help, Brodsky says. By educating these families and giving them resources to make the necessary changes in their lives, we can now reach a whole other population that did not have access to weight management help.

Brodsky emphasizes that the bi-weekly meetings at the clinic are essential to ensuring that families monitor their progress, are held accountable to their commitment, and can receive support when necessary.

If families are looking to improve their health, diets and activity levels, seeking professional help is certainly an effective way to pursue those changes, Brodsky says. However, for those who cannot afford to do so, arming themselves with knowledge and a strong support base is a great alternative that can prove equally successful.

Dr. Madan And His Colleagues Compare Worrying Trends of Smoking With Morbid Obesity, As The US News Health Warned About The Effects Of Obesity And Smoking On March 12th

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) April 03, 2013

Obesity by itself isn't good, but mixing it with smoking can increase anyone's health risks. US News Health (http://health.usnews.com/health-news/news/articles/2013/03/12/lung-transplant-hazard-may-rise-with-obese-recipients-smoking-donors) reported in March 12, 2013 that "serious illness and death" can result when obesity and smoking meet. The specific story centered around a lung transplant donor who indulged in smoking, and the obese receiver of the transplanted lung, along with a case study of 1,300 donors and donees. Bariatric surgeon Dr. Madan suggests that the effects of both smoking and obesity can be counteracted in time with healthy lifestyle changes, but that patients with a BMI of over 40 or more might consider LAP-BAND surgery to speed a healthy process of long-term weight loss.

What's surprising about the study mentioned in US News Health is that there was such a small increase of PGD or "primary graft dysfunction"(5%) between lung donors who had smoked, and those who had not. PGD happens when a transplanted organ doesn't settle well in its new home. Perhaps the phrase, "previous smokers" may be a clue, because the body can recover from smoking in a relatively short time.

In March 2013, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued a press release, stating that smokers should officially stop worrying about weight gain as a justification for smoking. The study indicated that an additional 5-10 pounds did not outweigh the good effects of putting down cigarettes. Quitting smoking for non-diabetes patients cut heart health risks in half, while non-smokers had a 32% chance of developing heart issues.

However, US News said that extra weight certainly added to risk factors in lung transplant. Just being overweight (with an additional 50 pounds or less) added 7% to PGD numbers, and obesity added 11%. Since the lungs are so essential to the body, it only takes 3 days to know whether or not the new lungs have taken to their new environment. PGD increases by 18% the risk of death within 90 days of the transplant, according to instructor Dr. Joshua Diamond of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine. Differences do not even out with time, either. The same researchers found a 23% risk increase between those with PGD and without.

This would not be as worrying, says Dr. Madan, if it weren't for a number of studies indicating that many morbidly obese patients (with a BMI of 40 or more) tend to gravitate toward over-smoking as well as over-eating. In fact, a 2010 study by BioMed Central stated that more weight often went along with more smoking: "A patient with morbid obesity had a 2-fold increased risk of becoming a smoker." Of course, the researchers considered whether or not these numbers and risk factors may have been inflated, due to unhealthy diet and lack of exercise. However, it seemed clear that heavy smoking, heavy drinking, and heavy eating tended to go together. Study results only confirmed the common perception, that smokers tend to be thinner than non-smokers, up to a BMI of 25.

One of the reasons why Dr. Madan encourages a return to classic weight-loss methods, along with bariatric procedures such as lap band surgery, is that many people can become discouraged at slow or seemingly non-existent results when only following better diet and exercise habits. With discouragement can come the inclination toward returning to unhealthy habits, including smoking, for relaxation. With an actual lap band surgery comes follow-up appointments with the physician, including checkups on progress, and band adjustments.

Dr. Madan has written 175 articles, and was the first in Memphis to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass. To date, he has performed over, and was first to offer an incision-less treatment for post-operative weight gain. As the former Chief of Laparoendoscopic and Bariatric Surgery Division at the University of Miami, Dr. Atul Madan may well be considered an expert in his field. Dr. Madan won the 2007 SAGES Young Investigator Award, was honored by the American Medical Association Physican's Recognition Award, among others. Dr. Madan's patient reviews are consistently high, and he received the 2011 and 2012 Patients' Choice Award.

Childrens Obesity Fund Concerned By Link Between Diet Drinks And Obesity

Beverly Hills, California (PRWEB) April 04, 2013

Childrens Obesity Fund founders Dr. Michael Omidi and Julian Omidi are concerned about recent findings that connect artificial sweeteners such as aspartame with the countrys obesity epidemic. A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported an increased risk of weight gain and the development of Type 2 Diabetes for those who drink diet soda.

While it is no secret that sodas, whether they are sweetened with corn syrup, sugar or zero-calorie sweeteners, are not good for you, the only reasonable benefit to consuming a diet drink is its lack of sugar and caloric content, which ostensibly facilitates weight loss, says Julian Omidi, Childrens Obesity Fund co-founder. This new research refutes that belief leading us to conclude that there is little to no weight control benefit in consuming a diet soft drink.

Researchers followed more than 60,000 female subjects for 14 years. Subjects who consumed diet drinks regularly were found to have a 15 percent increased risk for the development of Type 2 Diabetes than their counterparts who only drank regular soft drinks.

It is theorized that the enhanced sweetness of the diet drinks results in dulling the taste receptors, causing the drinker to consume more calories in order to satisfy the craving for sweets. Another theory suggests that the brain chemistry is affected by the artificial sweetness of the diet drinks. And since the body is not receiving calories from the sweet drinks, the brain stops signaling the release of hormones when sweet things are eaten, which could cause the body to fail to register satiety from fats and sugars. In essence, the study shows that diet drinks condition the body to crave more sweet drinks and foods acerbating the obesity problem.

Co-founded by Julian Omidi and Michael Omidi, M.D., the Childrens Obesity Fund (http://www.childrensobesityfund.org) seeks to help reverse the trend of rising obesity rates in America. The goal of the non-profit charity is to help people fully understand the obesity issue and its dire impacts on individuals and society as a whole -- and to use that knowledge to encourage children to grow up strong and healthy. Childrens Obesity Fund partners with other organizations to educate and support parents, educators and others so that we can all work together to raise healthy, active, social, and happy children. While the organization does not accept donations, it does encourage direct contributions of money and talents to the associations featured on our website. hGCTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diets & Weight Loss Plans Fight Childhood Obesity Linked to Overweight Parents

Pittsburgh,PA (PRWEB) April 22, 2013

According to the National Survey of Childrens Health, childhood obesity disproportionately affects children living in low-income, low-education and higher-unemployment households. The relationship between poverty and obesity is, unfortunately, well known, and a recent study by researchers at the Inje University Paik Hospital indicates that children living with overweight parents and children that come from families affected by poverty, are at a higher risk for childhood obesity. Diet Doc's hCG diet plans fight the risk of childhood obesity by offering long-term solutions for overweight parents through personalized hCG diet plans designed to achieve fast weight loss as well as a complete lifestyle change, hopefully helping arrest the increasing childhood obesity epidemic.

As reported in the Korea Herald earlier this year, a study led by Professor Kang Jae-heon with the Department of Family Medicine of the Korean Academy of Family Medicine, drew a definitive connection between overweight parents and the risk childhood obesity presents for their children. Kang Jae-heon focused on a population of 1,502 elementary students over a two-year period to attempt to isolate the major factors contributing to the risk of childhood obesity. After dividing the study into two age groups, children in the first grade and children in the fourth grade, Jae-heon determined that, although factors varied between the two groups, it was clear that children born to or living with overweight parents were at a greater risk for childhood obesity. Parents can diminish the risk of childhood obesity by embracing a healthy lifestyle beginning with weight loss. Diet Doc offers a physician designed and supervised hCG weight loss program adaptable for most people and health specific concerns.

Diet Doc's hCG diet plans are medically supervised, closely monitored weight loss programs that aggressively target excess and unnecessary fat supplies while offering flexible and satisfying meal plans. Unlike other low calorie diet plans, the Diet Doc hCG diet controls appetite so patients can choose the foods they enjoy most and keep energy levels high. The goal of these diet plans is not to simply achieve initial weight loss. While patients will see weight loss results, the program continues providing support and guidance to maintain weight loss and begin a healthy lifestyle.

Over the last decade, thousands of clients have successfully used Diet Doc diet plans to effectively achieve their weight loss goals. Diet Doc weight loss diet plans were developed by a team of diet consultants combining nutrition statistics and demonstrated results to create the safest and most effective hCG diet plans available. If Diet Doc diet plans are diligently followed, patients can lose their maximum weight loss potential of up to 15 20 pounds per month. The Diet Doc weight loss system personalizes diet plans to the unique health history, age, gender and lifestyle of each particular patient to optimize the best results possible. Diet Doc believes that this protocol is the way to achieve safe and quick weight loss as well as a complete long-term lifestyle change.

Yourwellness Magazine Follows Up Explorers Obesity Awareness Campaign

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 22 April 2013

In an innovative way to raise obesity awareness, Saudi explorer Youssef Al-Ruwaily has made a journey on foot from Makkah to Al-Aflaj, aiming to encourage Saudis to exercise to reduce obesity. According to WHO, worldwide obesity has nearly doubled since 1980, with 65% of the world's population living in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight. WHO also notes that more than 40 million children under the age of five were overweight in 2011, but this, and obesity, is preventable.

WHOs Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health provides a framework for their 2008-2013 action plan; a roadmap to establish and strengthen initiatives for the surveillance, prevention and management of Noncommunicable Diseases, such as obesity. 2011s Political Declaration of the High Level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases committed to advance the implementation of the WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, including the introduction of policies and actions aimed at promoting healthy diets and increasing physical activity in the entire population.

With WHOs and Youssef Al-Ruwailys strategy in mind, Yourwellness Magazine took a closer look at the obesity epidemic, aiming to raise awareness and give readers the facts about obesity. According to the article, Its a common misconception that only the developed world suffers from issues with obesity. As fast food becomes cheaper it becomes available worldwide. In Dubai, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, weight loss clinics have performed more than two hundred surgeries recently. A lot of the patients have been citizens but several have travelled in from outside the country.

Yourwellness Magazine explained that obesity comes with a whole variety of health complications of its own, raising the risk of heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and asthma. Weight loss surgery is a risky step to take, but when these complications are more threatening than surgery itself, and obese patients have exhausted all other options, Yourwellness Magazine noted that weight loss surgery may be a way to tackle the obesity epidemic.

Noted Obesity Researcher and HealthForumOnline Author Christopher Ochner, Ph.D. Interviewed on AARPs 2 Boomer Babes

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) April 23, 2013

Christopher Ochner, Ph.D., recognized author and nutrition expert will appear on AARPs award-winning radio show 2 Boomer Babes, hosted by Barbara Kline and Kathy Bernard, on Saturday & Sunday, June 1st & 2nd at 11am EST. Dr. Ochner, a Research Associate at the New York Obesity Nutrition Research Center at the St. Lukes Roosevelt Institute for Health Sciences and faculty at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NY, will be discussing how nutrition and dietary styles can be used to prevent, delay the onset, and even treat Alzheimers disease.

If we can delay the onset of Alzheimers disease by five years, we can reduce the incidence of Alzheimers by up to 50%, says Dr. Ochner, Co-Author of the newly published book, The Alzheimers Diet: A Step-by-step Nutritional Approach for Memory Loss Prevention and Treatment, written with notable Alzheimers expert & Harvard-trained neurologist, Dr. Richard Isaacson.

During the AARP radio interview, Drs. Ochner and Isaacson will address the connection between unhealthy dietary habits, obesity and Alzheimers disease. Specifically, they will discuss how proper diet can prevent and even treat Alzheimers, the role of obesity, the best and worst memory foods, why too many carbs can hurt the brain, how an overnight fast may provide better fuel for your brain and whether coconut oil is a good option for individuals with Alzheimers.

Dr. Ochner is also author of Implementing a Weight Management Program for Outpatients, a continuing education course available at HealthForumOnline, a leading provider of online CE courses for psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other allied health professionals. While this course is designed for mental health professionals, the content is relevant to anyone wishing to adopt a healthy weight management program.

What is good for the brain is also good for the body and vice versa, says Dr. Ochner, so following a brain healthy diet such as the one outlined in The Alzheimers Diet has been shown to reduce body weight in obese individuals. Similarly, evidence shows that following a healthy weight diet such as the one outlined in the HealthForumOnline CE course can also help stave off Alzheimers disease.

Question is, can a healthy diet last? The key to a successful (lasting) diet program for the mind or body is that it does not try to wrestle peoples favorite foods away from them, something rarely seen in conventional diets. In fact, Dr. Ochner encourages people to continue eating the foods they love, but to make these foods so they are healthy for the brain and body and still fun to eat. Diet sustainability is the key to success. Diets that forbid people from eating the kinds of foods they enjoy are tough to stick to. We dont want people going on a diet for a few months, we want people to develop a new and better lifelong relationship with food.

To listen to Dr. Ochners interview, simply click here. If you miss the broadcast, you can listen-on-demand to the archive anytime after June 2nd. To view more information about Dr. Ochners online weight management CE course available at HealthForumOnline click here. HealthForumOnline provides nationally-approved, accessible and cost-effective CE courses for mental health professionals to assist them in caring for patients coping with illness. In addition to Dr. Ochners course, HealthForumOnlines CE library includes many other courses relevant to the aging population such as Self Care for Professional Alzheimers Caregivers, A Culturally Sensitive Approach to Differential Diagnosis of Mental Health Problems in the Elderly, Anticipatory Mourning in Alzheimers Family Caregivers, Fundamentals of Healthy Aging, The Neuropsychology of Alzheimers Disease and Other Dementias, and many more.

hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diets & Weight Loss Plans Now Lower the Risk of High Blood Pressure Through Weight Loss Diets that Reduce Hormones Associated with Obesity

Buffalo, NY (PRWEB) April 25, 2013

The number one goal of Diet Docs new and improved prescription hCG weight loss diets is to rid clients of potential risks associated with being overweight or obese, including high blood pressure and heart disease. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to permanent disability, poor quality of life, or even a fatal heart attack.

Published in the scientific journal, Cell Metabolism, researchers isolated a protein in brain cells that, when activated by small molecules and hormones associated with obesity and cardiovascular disease, lead to potentially deadly increases in blood pressure. Leptin, the hormone associated with obesity, circulates at levels proportional to body fat and signals to the brain that the body has had enough to eat.

Diet Docs hCG weight loss diets were designed to target unnecessary and often embarrassing excess fat stores, improving each patients overall quality of life and lowering health risks associated with being overweight or obese. Diet Doc employs the best professionally trained dietary experts to create these unique hCG diet plans, individually tailored around each patients specific health factors. Diet Doc physicians, nutritionists and nurses all work together to ensure safe and effective results for each patient, based on each patients individual health needs, resulting in fast weight loss and a healthier long-term future.

In a new study performed by researchers with the University of Iowa, the relationship between obesity, heart disease, and high blood pressure was explored at a deeper level to reveal the cause and effect between these potentially deadly issues. Previous studies have linked a portion of the brain responsible for maintaining normal body function, including functions such as blood pressure, with food intake and body mass but this new study isolates a specific protein within brain cells that responds directly to stimulation from molecules and hormones associated with obesity and cardiovascular disease.

It is common knowledge that being overweight increases the risk of high hypertension and physicians recommend diet plans to achieve significant weight loss and reduce the risk of potentially deadly hypertension. Kamal Rahmouni, a University of Iowa associate professor of pharmacology and internal medicine, and the senior study author for this project, demonstrated that leptin, a hormone produced by fat cells, activates this protein and causes increased nerve activity and a rise in blood pressure. Rahmouni reported, Given the importance of this protein for the control of blood pressure, any abnormality in its activity might explain the hypertension associated with certain conditions like obesity and cardiovascular disease." Diet plans that focus on weight loss as well as long-term lifestyle changes not only help patients achieve their initial health goals, but also help maintain a healthy weight in the future thereby reducing the risk for dangerous weight related health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Patients who follow the prescription hCG diet protocol, created specifically for every patient by Diet Doc, based on simple yet effective medical evaluation from leading health physicians, can anticipate fast weight loss in the most difficult and stubborn areas such as the stomach, thighs and hips. The procedure used to create these personalized hCG diet plans includes extensive medical evaluation and a consultation with a Diet Doc physician, either via telephone or Skype. After the initial consultation, the physician creates personalized diet plans specifically designed around the patients health history, age and lifestyle, among other individual factors. Each patient will next consult with a Diet Doc nutritionist to discuss calorie intake and specific foods appropriate for their hCG weight loss diet, based on how each patients body functions optimally. The companys nutritionist works closely with the evaluating physician to ensure maximum efficacy and cohesion with every patients body and long-term health goals. By following this simple yet effective formula, Diet Doc is confident that patients will successfully lose weight fast and rid themselves of potentially deadly health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and even type II diabetes.

hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diets & Weight Loss Plans Announces New hCG Diet Plans That May Close the Link Between Obesity and Depression

Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) April 30, 2013

Those who suffer from obesity oftentimes experience weight-related stigma and discrimination leading to feelings of low self-esteem, low self-worth and guilt. The relationship between obesity and depression can become a vicious cycle with depression leading to poor dietary behaviors and the consumption of more fatty and sugary comfort foods. Also, a multitude of unsuccessful diet attempts can often lead one to blame themselves for lack of self control, these feelings in turn leading to depression.

Diet Doc offers a new advanced medical weight loss solution, providing individual hCG diet plans that are compatible with each patient's nutritional, dietary and lifestyle needs capable of breaking the yo-yo dieting cycle and restoring self-esteem with actual results. Benefiting from decades of scientific fast weight loss research, Diet Doc has modified and modernized the original 1950s hCG diet, allowing dieters to lose up to one pound per day. When pure prescription hCG is combined with tailor made, nutritionist-designed diet plans, the hypothalamus is stimulated, triggering and releasing years of stored and trapped fat into the bloodstream. Because the diet plans are typically low in carbohydrates, the body will burn the trapped fat instead of muscle mass when energy is required. Dieters are reporting the loss of pounds and inches in the hips, thighs, underarms and belly, typically the most stubborn areas, with no side effects of hunger or cravings. By reformulating prescription hCG to include energy boosting Vitamin B12, dieters are also avoiding the feelings of sluggishness and fatigue that often accompany other diets.

Prescription hCG is available to Diet Doc clients by prescription subsequent to a thorough, yet simple, evaluation by an expert weight loss physician. The most preferred method of delivery is injectable solution due to its ability to promote more rapid weight loss; however, many patients prefer sublingual tablets or oral hCG drops. Regardless of the delivery method, patients can expect to lose weight fast and safely, at over one pound per day on average. Diet Doc continues to focus on providing the safest and most effective weight loss methods available on today's market and offers only pure prescription grade hCG, manufactured in FDA approved pharmacies in the U.S.

The compassionate and dedicated staff of fast weight loss experts is available 6 days per week for consultation and to lend unlimited support, guidance and encouragement assuring that clients are never alone in the quest to live a life free of embarrassing and unhealthy excess weight. Each patient's diet experience is medically supervised and progress is monitored with constant communication. By offering the most effectively modernized version of the hCG diet, Diet Doc has become the leader in medically supervised weight loss and has helped thousands lose weight safely and rapidly. With diet plans designed to fit comfortably into any budget, weight loss is now affordable to almost everyone.

Life Without Obesity: An Awareness Rehabilitation Program

San Jose, Costa Rica (PRWEB) May 08, 2013

What is Compulsive Overeating?

Compulsive overeating is considered an addiction and an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Individuals suffering from this condition participate in recurrent episodes of impulsive eating, during which they may feel out of control followed by feelings of guilt and depression.

People who are addicted to food, like people who suffer from other addictions have trouble stopping their behavior, even if they want.

Those struggling with compulsive behaviors and who suffer from other kinds of addiction often find that they overcome one addiction and develop another one months or even years later. This is especially true of individuals who have undergone bariatric surgery as they generally try to resolve their issues with compulsive overeating.

What many studies have shown:

Studies have identified an increased risk of alcohol and drug use in these patients (The findings were published online Oct. 15, 2012 at http://archsurg.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1379763) even though the core issue motivating compulsive eating or addictive behaviors is not the substance or the conduct, but the reason why it is done. After bariatric surgery, if the patient does not address his or her emotional, cognitive and behavioral issues, there is a significant increase in the risk of further addictive behavior.

"Be aware of symptoms of substance abuse if you have undergone bariatric surgery, including changes in your relationship with drugs and alcohol," said Dr. Alexis Conason, a researcher at the New York Obesity Nutrition Research Center in New York City.

SAGES Issues Statement on Benefits of Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery - Governor Chris Christies Decision to Undergo Procedure Provides Opportunity to Educate Patients

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 10, 2013

Committed to enhancing overall patient well-being, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) today issued a statement on the benefits of laparoscopic obesity surgery. We echo the NIH consensus that weight loss surgery is the only effective long term method for the treatment of obesity while diet management and other systems achieve temporary results, said Dr. Scott Melvin, Professor and Chief of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Ohio State University and the immediate past President of SAGES. For the right patients, surgery for obesity is life saving, improves quality of life and may even reduce health care costs over the course of time. New Jersey Governor Chris Christies decision to share his experience has provided a valuable opportunity for patients to educate themselves and dialogue with their physicians on such minimally invasive surgical (MIS) procedures, Dr. Melvin said.

SAGES has been at the forefront of best practices in laparoscopic obesity surgery by researching, developing and disseminating the guidelines and training for standards of practice in surgical procedures. Both open and laparoscopic bariatric operations are effective therapies for morbid obesity and represent complementary state-of-the-art procedures however as is the case with a majority of MIS procedures, recovery is generally faster with MIS and there are less complications.

Patients are encouraged to review the SAGES Patient Information Guidelines for Laparoscopic Surgery for Severe (Morbid) Obesity at http://www.sages.org/publications/patient_information to learn about treatment options, the advantages of laparoscopic obesity surgery and if they would be considered as a candidate for this type of surgery.

About SAGES

The mission of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) is to improve quality patient care through education, research, innovation and leadership, principally in gastrointestinal and endoscopic surgery. SAGES is a leading surgical society, representing a worldwide community of over 6,000 surgeons that can bring minimal access surgery, endoscopy and emerging techniques to patients worldwide. The organization sets the clinical and educational guidelines on standards of practice in various procedures, critical to enhancing patient safety and health.

hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diets & Weight Loss Plans Targets Americas Teen Obesity Epidemic With Recently Improved hCG Diet Plans

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) May 11, 2013

With two of every three Americans clinically overweight, this twenty-first century plague has reached monumental proportions, rendering America one of the least healthy countries in the modern world. Behind cigarette smoking, obesity and its related complications is the second highest form of preventable death in America. Studies have revealed another damaging consequence of obesity. Obesity has been established as negatively impacting the self-esteem of teens and adults alike. The Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics released a report claiming that self-esteem issues can stem from a multitude of factors, with the leading contributor being childhood obesity, especially in the critical teenage years, leaving the child feeling isolated and lonely.

Another peripherally impactful result of obesity is the lack of activity by obese teens, specifically related to decreased self-esteem. Teens feel less confident, and as a result abstain from communal activity or fraternization with peers, including physical activities that could potentially increase health and lower weight. With all things considered, Diet Doc offers improved hCG diet plans for those teens over 18 years old, and for the parents of children struggling with weight gain, realizing the positive impact that a successful parent can have on children.

Diet Doc has helped thousands of Americans lose pounds and inches in a safe, proven effective program, increasing health and self-esteem in the process.

With over half of Americans living in single parent households and the need for a two income family, healthy food choices may tend to be compromised, making fast food more appealing to the working parent. CBS news reports that http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-204_162-591325.html that fast food contributes to increased caloric intake and obesity risk for both children and adults in America. The fast food industry spends billions of dollars on advertising directed towards attracting a child audience. The findings suggest that fast food consumption has increased five-fold since 1970. Fast food lovers also consumed 187 more calories daily than non-fast food eaters, which likely adds up to about six pounds more per year, contributing to childhood obesity.

Dr. Kanani, Woodland Hills Dentist: Links Between Gum Disease, Obesity and Inflammation

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) May 16, 2013

Along with type 2 diabetes and heart disease, obesity can also be a risk factor for gum disease, according to a February 6, 2013 article posted in General Dentistry and in PR Newswire (Being Overweight Linked to Higher Risk of Gum Disease). Inflammation is the culprit, says quoted dentist and author Charlene Krejci. Dr. Kaveh Kanani, a cosmetic dentist in Woodland Hills, says that research like this can be a powerful motivator for both weight loss and dental visits, so that dental implant costs can be avoided.

Excess sitting can lead to both inflammation and extra weight, according to a February 21, 2013 article posted by WebMD (Too Much Sitting Linked to Chronic Health Problems). However, the PR Newswire article goes beyond the dangers of sitting for hours at a time, indicating that the cytokines, or proteins with inflammatory properties, are actually produced relentlessly by the bodies of overweight individuals. Essentially, says Dr. Kanani, this means that there can be unintentional blood flow damage to a person's gums by the double problem of having extra weight that encourages extra sitting.

Nor is weight the worst problem, says the dentist Woodland Hills. Bacteria buildup can lead to a seemingly endless cycle of inflammation and then gum disease, because a certain type of cytokines are produced just by having gum disease. In some ways, it's as if the body sets itself on a course of failure unless drastic measures are taken. Sometimes, once the gums begin to separate from the teeth (or teeth begin to get wobbly), the gaps may make it necessary to incur dental implant cost.

According to a sobering April 12, 2013 article on Diabetes Care (Inflammation Links Obesity and Gum Disease), belly fat itself may be a large problem for those who want to retain their original teeth. Belly fat contains about 50 bioactive substances, which can set off inflammatory responses that reduce the bodys ability to suppress appetite or use insulin to regulate glucose levelsboth of which are linked to diabetes. Fat itself, no matter where it is stored, can increase a protein that has been linked to both inflammation and cardiovascular disease.

Of course, losing weight can improve health overall, but people can fear going to the dentist as much (or more) as they may fear going through another diet and exercise program. Dr. Kanani offers sedation procedures, in which the patient can either be asleep or semi-aware for the dental process, for a monthly special of under $ 400. Dental implants are also available for a reduced rate.

Dr. Kaveh Kanani has a biology degree from California State University, and a doctorate in Dental Surgery from New York University. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry awarded him with an Associate Fellowship, and Dr. Kanani built on his knowledge by taking multiple AAID Maxi courses. After becoming an associate of the Southern California Family Dentistry, and South Bay Dental, he opened his own office in 2001.

Weight Loss Market / Obesity Management Market Analyzed in New Research Report Available at RnRMarketresearch.com

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) May 21, 2013

The weight loss/obesity management market is divided into three major segments, namely diets (foods, beverages, & supplements), services, and fitness and surgical equipment; the market is forecast till 2017. Global rise in obesity and chronic diseases are stimulating the growth of the market.

The global weight loss/obesity management market was worth $ 265 billion in the year 2012. The global increase in obesity, increasing number of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and cardiac problems, increasing personal disposable income, government initiatives to increase awareness about health and fitness, and technological advancements are the key factors driving the global weight loss/obesity management market. Nonetheless, a few critical factors like availability of low-cost alternatives, adoption of deceptive marketing strategies, and high cost of customized services are hindering growth of the market.

Low calorie beverages (carbonated and non-carbonated), and slimmer waters/natural mineral salt drinks showcase vast opportunities for key players in this market. Herbal/green market is also growing at a very fast pace in Asian countries, especially China. With the introduction of technologically advanced and highly sophisticated fitness equipment, the use of cardiovascular and strength training equipment is on a rise. The total number of health clubs in India increased from 765 in 2008 to 1,175 in 2011, at a CAGR of 15%.

Surgical procedures have evolved over the years. LAP BAND surgery is a recent, less traumatic, adjustable, and reversible obesity surgery available today. Other surgeries for obesity management include liposuction, gastric bypass (stomach stapling), laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and ultrasonic therapy. Evaluation of non-invasive bariatric surgeries, such as intragastric balloon system, StomaphyX, cold laser shaping, and cryolipolysis have further made the weight loss procedures safe and effective.

The geographies covered in this study are North America, Europe, Asia, and Rest of the World (RoW). These four regions are further segmented by major countries, and geographic split for all the sub-segments is presented at a regional level. North America is the largest market for weight loss/obesity management market, followed by Europe and Asia. North America and Europe are expected to grow at a slower pace, primarily due to the economic slowdown and market maturity. The Asian market, especially India and China, is expected to witness a boost in demand for weight loss products, and is poised to register maximum growth over the next five years, owing to the rising obesity rates and related health problems such as diabetes and heart diseases.

Scope Of The Report

This research report categorizes the global weight loss/obesity management market into weight loss diets, fitness and surgical equipment, and services. These markets are broken down into segments and sub-segments, providing exhaustive value analysis for 2010, 2011 and 2012, as well as forecast up to 2017. Each of the market is comprehensively analyzed at a granular level by geography (North America, Europe, Asia, and Rest of the World) to provide in-depth information on the global scenario.

hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diets & Weight Loss Plans Break the Cycle of Obesity and Weight Gain With New Education For Patients on How to Lose Weight the Healthy Way

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) May 22, 2013

Many people across the United States struggle with obesity and are looking for education on how to lose weight safely and rapidly. Unfortunately, crossing initial weight loss thresholds can be challenging and may demotivate people to continue their journey toward healthy eating and healthy lifestyles. A new study discussed this week on Medical News Today offers credence to the testimony indicating that learning how to lose weight and actually losing those initial pounds can prove extremely difficult.

Researchers with Brown University found scientific evidence that obesity is a vicious cycle of forgoing healthy eating habits and continuous weight gain. Diet Docs hCG diets offer patients an end to this cycle with prescription strength hCG treatments and an expert team of weight loss professionals that are committed to helping patients learn how to lose weight fast, how to achieve initial weight loss goals and how to completely transform their lives into healthy, active lifestyles. Diet Doc's new weight loss education is a great way to learn how the body functions during dieting, not simply go through the motions of dieting.

In a study just published this month, scientists at Brown University delved deeper into obesity research and found that fitting the clinical definition of obesity in itself can lead to further weight gain. Dr. Eduardo A. Nillni and his colleagues expanded on the already available studies indicating that obesity causes desensitization to leptin, a hormone that manages fat levels, and found that other hormones are also affected by obesity. Specifically, the hormone alpha-MSH is at dangerously low levels in subjects that fit the clinical definition for obesity. Alpha-MSH is responsible for suppressing the appetite and encouraging calorie burning in the body. Patients affected by obesity experience diminished numbers of alpha-MSH, which unfortunately leads to further weight gain. Diet Doc understands this vicious cycle of obesity and offers patients an opportunity, through hCG diets, to manage their weight by learning how to develop healthy eating habits and how to lose weight safely for their individual body type.

hCG is a hormone that was isolated in the 1950s by researcher A.T.W. Simeons. Produced naturally in pregnant women, hCG acts as a protective barrier to both the fetus and the mother. By mobilizing excess fat stores, hCG assures that the growing fetus receives the nutrition it requires while leaving the mothers structural fat and muscle mass untouched. Diet Doc took this science from the 1950s and modernized it with todays technology and updated health understanding to create the nation's leading version of hCG diets currently available on the market. Diet Docs hCG diets use prescription strength hCG treatments not only to mobilize unnecessary and excess fat in patients, but also as a potent appetite suppressant that allows patients to make healthy eating decisions and learn how to lose weight fast, naturally, and safely.

The prescription hCG treatments help patients over initial weight loss hurdles, but Diet Docs hCG diets are so effective because they combine these treatments with education on how to lose weight the best way for each patients body type. Potential patients personally consult with a Diet Doc physician and team of weight loss coaches to design a meal plan specifically around their food preferences, health history, age and lifestyle. Because Diet Docs hCG diets are created specifically for each patient, they are more effective and patients see fast results that motivate even further weight loss. Diet Doc is committed to helping clients achieve their weight loss goals and lead a healthier, more active lifestyle for the rest of their lives.

DietAssist responds to research that gut bacteria can reverse obesity and Type-2 diabetes in animal studies

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 25 May 2013

Giving certain bacteria to obese mice could dramatically alter health according to research, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

It is thought that the bacteria change the gut lining and in doing so changes the way food is absorbed.

The human body is teeming with bacteria - the tiny organisms outnumber human cells in the body 10 to 1.

And there is growing evidence that this collection of bacteria or "microbiome" affects health.

However, DietAssist say that the idea that people can eat cream cakes and other high fat foods and then just consume a cocktail of bacteria to reverse the effects is ludicrous.

Paul Howard, co-creator of the DietAssist programme, said: The obesity problem in the UK and the western world is well documented and it is because we consume high fat, high sugar foods and too much of them. The solution is to change the type and quantity of what we eat. To do this we have to change the way we think and behave around food.

Overweight or obese people find it hard to lose weight. This is because they deprive themselves of the foods that they love when they diet, so the minute they stop dieting they return to those foods with gusto and, hey presto, the weight returns and then some.

Dieting on its own does not usually change behaviours and so is doomed to failure in most people. Whilst eating these bacteria may cure the symptoms, it fails to address the real problem, which is behavour. A slim person has a completely different way of viewing and relating to food than an overweight person.

In a recent study conducted by DietAssist, the subjects were given no advice on diet, they just used the DietAssist online programme to change the way they felt about food. The average weight loss over 6 weeks was 23 lbs.

One of the study subjects, Julie said: I am really confident going forward; I know Ive got a long way to go but I know I can do it. I have been out for meals, I have been out with friends, but instead of going for the most humungous

hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diets & Weight Loss Plans Announces New hCG Diet Plans Capable of Helping Patients Avoid Painful Obesity Related Osteoarthritis

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) May 27, 2013

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common joint disorders and has been directly linked to obesity. Carrying excess weight affects weight bearing joints, especially the knees, with studies revealing that knee osteoarthritis is approximately 4-5 times more common in overweight people as compared to people of normal body weight. In earlier years, joint replacement was not an option for obese patients, especially for those that were very obese. The Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center houses this and a lot more information on the benefits of weight loss for the prevention of Arthritis. Diet Doc has recently improved their hCG diet plans to provide more effective weight loss, capable of relieving symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Because excess weight adds additional pressure on the joints, the risk of developing painful osteoarthritis can be significantly reduced by losing this weight. This weight loss can also result in a substantial reduction in pain for those already suffering from osteoarthritis. Clearly, being overweight increases the load placed on the joints, increases joint stress and could possibly accelerate the breakdown of cartilage. Experts agree that losing weight may not reverse the damage that has been done to a joint, but even moderate weight loss can have a dramatic effect on the relief of joint pain.

Diet Doc offers an effective and fast weight loss solution to help patients avoid the pain, expense, and potential risks associated with the development of painful, and often debilitating, osteoarthritis. Decades of research indicate that prescription hCG has a positive effect on fast weight loss when this hormone is used in combination with diet plans that are specific to a patient's nutritional needs. At Diet Doc, each patient is evaluated to assure that dietary requirements are optimally met, inclusive of medical history, lifestyle and activity level. Diet plans are created for those who have struggled to lose that difficult last 10 pounds to those that must lose 100 pounds or more.

By following the hCG diet plan guidelines, along with the administration of regulated doses of prescription hCG, typically administered once daily, 97% of Diet Doc clients are boasting a loss of one pound or more per day of unwanted, unhealthy and embarrassing excess weight. The specially trained fast weight loss specialists at Diet Doc remain committed to providing everyone with the opportunity to lose weight fast and safely, thus avoiding weight related conditions such as painful osteoarthritis, by medically supervising and monitoring each patient's journey, assuring the safest and most effective diet experience available. Doctors, nurses and coaches are a phone call or an email away and are available 6 days per week to lend unlimited support, guidance and encouragement before, during and even after the excess weight has disappeared with aftercare consultation available to encourage long term health and weight maintenance. Losing as little as 10-20 pounds can make a significant impact on ones joint health and may result in patients avoiding painful, and often debilitating osteoarthritis.
