Oral Cancer Awareness Month Spurs Smileboston Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry to Share Important, Lifesaving Tips

(PRWEB) April 25, 2013

Steven D. Spitz, DMD, founder of Smileboston Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry, wants to save lives and increase awareness during Aprils oral cancer awareness month. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, oral cancer causes over 8,000 deaths yearly, killing roughly one person per hour, 24 hours a day. Historically, the death rate associated with oral cancer is particularly high due to this type of cancer being routinely discovered late in its development. To increase awareness and help put an end to this deadly cycle, Dr. Spitz is sharing specific warning signs to look for.

Nearly 42,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year. An oral cancer check should be a routine part of every hygiene visit, said Dr. Steven Spitz of Smileboston Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry. Early detection, diagnosis and treatment are absolutely the key to survival and recovery.

Dr. Marc Blatstein Explains why a Clean Spa is Important

(PRWEB) May 01, 2013

Dr. Marc Blatstein says getting a beautiful & yet safe manicure or pedicure can be achieved with a little diligence; either by going to a medically supervised facility, or by identifying a salon that practices similar sterilization techniques. These salons do exist as seen in Nails Magazine.

Per Dr. David Johnson, medical regulations to autoclave nail instruments are not mandated in the cosmetic industry. The only way to fully eradicate infectious organisms is through a very technical process called autoclaving. The methods used to autoclave metal instruments in medical offices and hospitals nationwide are regulated by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and involve an intense heat and pressure treatment for up to 45 minutes at 272 degrees Fahrenheit.

Paula Abduls manicure resulted in her getting an infection. She is not alone as news articles today are filled with examples. Autoclaves (machines that have FDA clearance for sterilization purposes) are now available for salon use to help mitigate dangerous infections like HIV/AIDS or MRSA the flesh-eating disease. These are the same as have been used by hospitals and the greater medical community. While they have in the past been very expensive, autoclaves recently have become available at more affordable prices.

Dr. Marc Blatstein recommends the following:

-A nail salons level of cleanliness really hinges on whether its not only aware of the sterilization musts, but on how consistently those requirements are being followed. Whether there is sufficient compliance with disinfection requirements is an important variable in the safety of salon and barbershop services from a public health perspective.

Bring instruments to the salon along with nail files and use rubbing alcohol clean to clean instruments after every use.
Its very important to look beyond how expensive or beautiful a spa or a salon is as it is no guarantee that it will be free of fungi and bacteria. Ask to see sterilization logs, their autoclave as well as observing that they remove the instruments from a fresh sterilized bag just before their use.
Whirlpools commonly used in pedicure spas need to be cleaned with either bleach or hospital grade disinfectant, most important with their water jets running. Viruses/bacteria/ fungi is known to reside in their water filtration systems, and it is impossible to clean them with the systems off. Still unsure, a disposable tub liner can be brought to be used in during any whirlpool. Water filled tubs that do not have a drain or water jet are safest, but still these too need to be cleaned the same way.
Ask to see if their correct licenses are posted in clear view.
Observe to see if manicurists wash their hands thoroughly between clients.

Across the country there are also professionally supervised Medical spas. One Marc Blatstein is familiar with is located in Richmond Va., The Foot & Hand Spa (http://www.footandhandspa.com ). These physician based facilities for the most part only use medical-grade skin care products and EPA-registered hospital disinfectants. Sanitation procedures utilized meet or exceed OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards for maintaining a clean environment and preventing the spread of germs and disease. Instruments here too are sterilized using the same techniques a hospital uses to sterilize surgical instruments. In addition to a clean environment these medically run spas are able to evaluate & create special care Spa or Salon treatments for those who are diabetic, undergoing chemotherapy or who have other diseases that require special care.

Faster Wound Care for Diabetic Foot Ulcers: FDA-registration of New Non-prescription Terrasil Wound Care Ointment May Be Important News for 16 million diabetics in U.S.

Woonsocket, RI (PRWEB) June 17, 2013

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) nearly 30 million people in the U.S. have diabetes. Diabetic foot ulcers are a major complication resulting from diabetes. They occur in approximately 15% of diabetics and precede 84% of all lower leg amputations. Diabetic foot ulcers and related problems cause 20 percent of the nearly 3 million hospitalizations related to diabetes every year. Due to poor circulation in diabetic patients, diabetic chronic wounds heal very slowly and often remain for years as skin ulcers. To control infection and prevent amputation, non-healing chronic wounds require expensive treatments that can cost thousands of dollars. According to the American Diabetes Association, the average cost of healing a single foot ulcer is $ 8,000, that of an infected ulcer is $ 17,000, and that of a major amputation is $ 45,000. But, now there may be an effective and substantially lower-cost alternative.

NEW FDA-REGISTERED WOUND CARE OINTMENT

A new, non-prescription ointment was recently registered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for distribution in the U.S. It may provide a very low cost alternative for treatment of diabetic foot ulcers and other chronic wounds and traumatic wounds.

Developed and manufactured by Aidance Skincare, a Rhode Island company, their Wound Care Ointment is sold direct to consumers under the brand name Terrasil. During development of the wound care formulation, clinical studies in 2010 and 2011 with 192 patients showed that the ointment was able to heal chronic wounds up to 3.7-times (370%) faster than conventional treatment. Normally, a 15-20% clinical improvement is noteworthy, so more than 300% is extraordinary.

Since the products introduction in October 2012, it has been distributed to hospitals throughout the U.S. By March, Dr. Thomas Serena, MD - one of the worlds top wound care experts - was so impressed with the ointments effectiveness that he initiated a multi-center case study program to document the formulations ability to heal diabetic foot ulcers faster. Physicians and nurses at hospitals, wound care centers and medical offices across the U.S. have demonstrate the powerful efficacy of Terrasil Wound Care & Antiseptic Ointment to control bioburden and support healing 2-4 times faster than comparative treatment options.

Clinical evaluations are currently being performed in 18 hospitals in the U.S., with initial case studies documenting effective control of infection and accelerated healing of even the hardest-to-heal chronic wounds. In addition, in-vitro laboratory tests comparing the companys Wound Care Ointment to Bacitracin, Triple Antibiotic Ointment and several silver gels, showed that the Terrasil formulation killed bacteria up to 21-times (21X) more efficiently and prevented regrowth of the bacteria. This is important because bacterial invasion of chronic wounds, referred to as bioburden, is a major inhibitor of healing.

HELPS DOCTORS HEAL CHRONIC WOUNDS

Dr. Jeffrey Niezgoda, MD, a nationally-prominent wound specialist said: Terrasil is a novel wound ointment that has the potential to provide significant positive impact on one of the primary impediments to healing in chronic wounds: wound bioburden. It is easy to use and well tolerated by patients with all types of non-healing wounds and should be considered as a primary topical agent.

Dr. Brock Liden, DPM, a podiatric researcher and frequent speaker at conferences said: Terrasil Wound Care & Antiseptic Ointment is a new, unique topical cream that has proven to be very effective treating recalcitrant wounds. It has provided a dual-prong benefit for our patients, by resolving infections that did not respond to traditional topical silver dressing - even outperforming oral therapies - and by being effective at epithelizing and closing wounds. This ointment provides the doctor with a new tool that is effective against both easy-to-treat wounds and complicated, difficult-to-heal wounds.

Available in a 14-gram (0.5 ounce) and 44-gram (1.5 ounce) container, the wound care ointment costs between $ 24 and $ 57. The Terrasil ointment provides three critical functions: providing a barrier protection for wounds (especially chronic wounds), reducing the chance of infection, and supporting healing. The wound care ointments are formulated with a patented mineral complex, active ingredients, organic extracts and compounds. These mixtures produce a synergistic effect that provides outstanding support for accelerated natural healing of diabetic foot ulcers and other types of wounds. Several patents have been awarded and more are pending in the U.S. and internationally.

The Terrasil Wound Care Ointment can be purchased direct from the company at http://www.AidanceProducts.com or by calling 877-424-3262. Medical professionals interested in learning more about Terrasil Wound Care Ointment, click here.

BACDT respond to reports claiming youth regard hairdressing more important than their dental health

(PRWEB UK) 10 December 2012

A significant number of young adults believe their hair appointment is more important than regular dental health check ups.

In a recent survey by Denplan released on the 7th of November 2012, nearly half of 18-24 year olds surveyed said they prioritise the time they had put into their personal appearance over time they put aside for dental care and treatment. The research by Denplan also revealed 57 per cent think they could improve the maintenance of their teeth with 38 per cent prioritising luxury spending on hair appointments, jewelry and clothes, higher than spending on their dental health.

Dentist Martin Fallowfield told Denplan he wasnt surprised by the statistics stating, Many young people I see in my surgery focus on having a Hollywood smile, rather than the health of their teeth and gums... and so I spent a lot of time explaining why it is so important to look after their oral health.

The British Association of Clinical Dental Technicians (BACDT), which promotes the awareness and use of certified dental professionals across the UK, believe this statistic reflects the lack of concern younger generations have on their oral health.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, Richard Daniels CEO stated, It is a growing concern that younger people are placing their oral hygiene and dental care lower on their everyday priorities than hair and beauty products.

However in the study 34 per cent of those asked within the same age bracket said they did not feel their is enough information readily available on how to properly look after their teeth and gums, twice the proportion as in the 55-64 age category.

Daniels continued, A lack of dental care can have a detrimental effect on a persons health. With such a high percentage of young people saying they cant find the right information, this could be a vital factor why oral hygiene is pushed so far down the list."

We need to encourage a better awareness around the importance of dental health amongst young adults, so they can take more responsibility and interest in looking after their teeth and gums. If we fail to act, we could face a serious problem.

The BACDT is a leading professional associations which promotes the advancement of certified practices within clinical dental technology. Hidden Hearing Respond to Researchers Identifying Important Inner Ear Cells

(PRWEB UK) 6 March 2013

Researchers at Stanford Medical School of Medicine have identified a group of progenitor cells in the inner ear that can become the sensory hair cells and adjacent supporting cells that enable hearing.

Studying these progenitor cells could someday lead to discoveries that will help millions suffering from hearing loss due to damaged or impaired sensory hair cells.

In research published online in Development, it was identified that a class of cells called tympanic border cells can give rise to hair cells and the cells that support them during a phase of cochlear maturation after birth.

A spokesperson for Hidden Hearing said:

Further understanding of the biology of the ear is important to help understand how the ear works and what can be done to treat any problems within the ear that can cause hearing loss. Research such as this may one day see further treatments and solutions for hearing problems.

With more than 40 years experience in treating hearing loss, Hidden Hearing is entrusted with the care of more than 100,000 people each year. The firm has 84 hearing centres across the UK, all catering for a range of needs and budgets. Specialising in hearing tests and hearing aids, the company also offer a variety of hearing aid accessories and in 2005, became the first dedicated hearing retailer to be recognised as an Investor in People.
