South Bay Vascular Center and Vein Institute in San Jose, CA has launched a new campaign via social media focusing on foot health education. The campaign provides the public with simple tips and ideas to care for feet, in order to promote improved health and a better quality of life.

Dr. Polly Kokinos, Dr. Jafar Tay, Dr. John Frusha, and Dr. Kim Rappaport, the four leading vein doctors at South Bay Vascular Center, encourage walking as a way to promote foot health. Walking for thirty minutes five times a week can help encourage blood flow, explains Dr. Kokinos. This lowers the risk of varicose veins, swelling in the feet, and deep vein thrombosis.

South Bay Vascular Center and Vein Institute specializes in treating various forms of vein disease, a problem that can affect foot health. Walking is one of several topics the center is discussing this month. They are providing foot health tips through Twitter and Facebook.

Though they are often overlooked, good health in the feet can have a positive impact on the rest of the body.

Advancements in technology and medicine have led to the development of effective, minimally invasive treatments that produce optimal results with few side-effects or downtime. Certified Pet Groomer and CEO of Averys Pet Styling Salon & Boutique Offers Tips to Keep Pets Safe and Healthy During Harsh Winter Weather

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) January 15, 2013

In order to diminish the effects of the winter weather, Certified Pet Groomer and CEO of Averys Pet Styling Salon and Boutique, Taria Avery, suggests 3 basic tips for pet parents to get started with to help keep their fur-kids healthy and happy during the winter season.

1.) Brush or Comb Your Pet 2-3 Times a Week

Keeping your pets coat clear of knots and matts is as important as maintaining monthly baths. Using a brush is fine, but if your pet has long curly hair be sure to use a comb and take it all the way down to the skin. For some double coated dogs, excess oils can build up in their skin and may cause dry patches that may eventually contribute to hot spots if pet parents do not pay attention to their pets skincare regimen. On a double-coated dog, use a brush to remove the excess undercoat and to facilitate proper air circulation to the skin.

Cats require grooming too. Many cat owners believe their cats do a good enough job keeping clean, but they too need a thorough combing to help keep their skin and coat healthy.

2.) Set Aside 15 Minutes for Essential Care

In addition to brushing or combing, essential care includes clipping nails, brushing teeth, and cleaning out pets ears. This should be done about 1-3 times a week depending on your fur-kids specific needs. During the winter season, grooming nuances tend to get put off, but to keep pesky infections at bay it is critical to maintain essential care.

3.) Maintain Exercise Habits

Dont let the blistering winter elements stop pets from getting the exercise they need. Pet parents can create in-house solutions to make sure their pets get the required exercise. For example, allowing pets to walk on treadmills is a great way to keep pets fit. But be sure to keep the treadmill on low speed, and discuss it with your Veterinarian before putting your pet on any exercising machine.

Avery understands pet grooming is just as important during the winter months as it is during the warmer seasons. Bitter cold conditions can have a harmful effect on a pets skin, coat and paw pads if not properly maintained. Unfortunately, pet parents may be tempted to skip out on winter grooming sessions assuming that allowing their pets fur to grow full is the best protection from intense winds and cold weather.

Lastly Avery says try to stick as closely to their normal grooming routine as possible. Make sure your fur-kid has access to fresh and clean water at all times, keep a space heater close by to provide additional warmth in the house if appropriate. As the cold and snow set in, continue booking your regular grooming sessions, but use these tips to protect your fur-kid and supplement your existing maintenance schedule with your dog groomer or cat groomer.

Royal Flush Havanese Welcomes The First Day Of Spring By Offering Safety Tips On How To Keep Dogs Safe As Warm Weather Arrives.

Charlestown, RI (PRWEB) March 20, 2013

There's snow on the ground and it's below freezing but it is the first day of Spring and Royal Flush Havanese has some safety tips on how to protect your dog as warm weather approaches and outdoor activities increase.

1. There are still a lot of chemicals that have been dropped on the streets to keep them from icing so clean your dogs paws with a wet cloth after going for a walk until you're sure enough Spring rain has washed away those remnants of winter. Likewise, when the temperature gets warmer protect his feet from getting scorched on hot surfaces like asphalt.

2. If you've been using a winter coat or sweater on your dog it's time to lighten up. Dogs can overheat quickly. Take his clothing off as soon as he goes inside.

3. Don't shave long haired dogs for the summer. Their coats protect them from the sun's damaging rays. Leave enough length so you can't see his skin. Dog's can get sunburn just like people. If your dog has had surgery or has hot spots where there is hair missing and he is going to be out in the sun for long periods of time, either use sunscreen for babies or tie a tee shirt on him to protect his skin. If he has a light nose he is more prone to sunburn just like light skinned people so rub a little baby sunscreen on his nose and if he spends a lot of time on his back in the sun, rub it on his entire underside. Do not ever use a sunscreen with zinc oxide because it is toxic to dogs.

4. Dogs can have allergies to pollen, dust and mold just like humans do. They can have seasonal allergies too. Your dog may have symptoms like coughing, itching, sneezing and changes in his coat. Never give human medicine to dogs unless under the direction of your Vet. There are canine allergy medicines that are very effective. We, at Royal Flush Havanese, aim to prevent allergies by giving our dogs NuVet supplements daily. It boosts the immune system, nourishes skin and coats, helps prevent tear staining, allergies, hot spots and a variety of health issues that can be very detrimental to your dog.

5. Many plants and mulch that attract dogs are also toxic to them. Check out the list of toxic plants, indoor hazard, etc. on Royal Flush Havanese's Puppy Care Page. If your lawn is treated with chemicals don't let your dog on the nice lawn. Pick a spot that hasn't been treated. Fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, etc are often toxic to your dog.

6. BBQ pits and gas grills can cause burns to your dog even after they have been extinguished. Take care to teach him to keep his distance from these hazards.

7. If your dog is out boating with the family he should always wear a life vest even if he is a great swimmer. If he is accidentally knocked overboard he could get into a bad situation quickly. Better to be safe than sorry.

8. All dogs are not great swimmers. Stay close to your dog at the ocean and fresh water. Ocean dangers include undertow, jellyfish and dehydration if he ingests too much salt water. Seek medical attention if vomiting and diarrhea occur. Dogs can get heat stroke too. In lakes, ponds and rivers, dangers to your dog include parasites and bacteria that are present in the water. Always keep plenty of fresh water available for your dog especially by the shore.

Common sense and supervision will help keep your dog safe as the warmer weather approaches.

Texas Thyroid Institute Announces Ways to Keep The Thyroid Naturally Young and Healthy

Houston, TX (PRWEB) April 10, 2013

With aging, thyroid issues clearly become much more common. At menopause, Hashimotos Thyroiditis and hypothyroidism affect more than 10 % of women. The older a woman is after menopause, the more likely she will become affected by an underactive thyroid and in most cases, low grade hypothyroidism.

An underactive thyroid is typically diagnosed by blood testing which reveals a high TSH level and a normal or low T4-depending on how severe the under activity of the gland is. In men, however, there is an increase in the frequency of hypothyroidism at the age of 60. Despite that, hypothyroidism continues to be more common in older women than older men. While a high TSH level, in both men and women, is clearly indicative of a failing thyroid, a TSH level in the conventional normal range does not necessarily mean that the thyroid gland is perfectly normal. Researchers have noticed a trend of increase in TSH level within the normal range as people age. The increase in TSH levels with aging has been interpreted as a normal, naturally occurring phenomenon simply related to the normal aging process. But is it a real natural, normal occurrence? It has become increasingly apparent that men and women, who have taken good care of themselves, adhered to a healthy lifestyle, take the right supplements, tend to have TSH levels similar to TSH levels in people who are in their 20s and 30s and who have perfectly normal thyroid glands.

The truth of the matter is that the thyroid gland does age alongside most organs in the human body. But the aging process and cellular damage that a person may experience over time depends very much on the quality of nutrition and how much they have taken care of helping their body clear the damaging free-radicals that are produced by cells as a result of normal metabolism. It is quite likely that thyroid damage from overwhelming oxidative stress can occur even to someone in their teens or 20s. Pesticides, man-made chemicals, heavy metals and other pollutants in the environment can damage mitochondria, genes and cells, and can accelerate the aging process.

Eating high-glycemic, sugar-loaded foods and foods loaded with saturated fat challenges the oxidative system and will lead to similar damaging effects to the cells- including thyroid cells. Lacking antioxidants and not paying attention to vitamin and antioxidant intake can, again, precipitate aging and also underactivity of the thyroid gland, but it doesnt stop there. These cellular impediments also make thyroid hormone work less efficiently in the cells. This explains, for instance, why being overweight can make a person more vulnerable to having a thyroid problem related to immune attacks or simply caused by the cellular struggle at the thyroid gland level.

It is possible to help the thyroid system in its entirety, both the gland and where the hormones work, by sticking to a well-balanced, low-glycemic, low-saturated fat, high-protein, Mediterranean diet and focusing on detoxing with foods and taking the right supplements.

For this reason, Dr. Ridha Arem, author of the bestselling The Thyroid Solution, and the newly released The Thyroid Solution Diet, includes in his thyroid wellness and weight loss program thyroid supplements such as his specially formulated ThyroLife Optima, which is also highly recommended by health professionals all over the country. Dr. Arem has just revised the composition of ThyroLife Optima to make it even more effective. The new composition is detailed in his book, The Thyroid Solution Diet, a book full of tips on how to enhance thyroid health, efficiency and metabolism and keep the thyroid young and healthy.
