Pet Health Company, Healthy Brands for Life, Releases Ear Care Solutions for Dogs and Cats

Nixa, MO (PRWEB) March 29, 2013

Ear problems are very common in pets, with most suffering from this condition sometime in their life. If not properly treated, ear problems can progress to painful infections for the animal and costly vet trips for the pet owner. VetraCare Pet has created two new, over-the-counter products, VetraCare Pet Ear Rinse and Vetra Care Pet Ear Wipe, to help clean debris and wax from pets ears, control odors, and reduce soreness and irritation in the ear canal.

According to a survey by Veterinary Pet Insurance, dog ear problems are the second leading cause of veterinary visits. Wet ears can predispose pets to ear infections, making routine cleaning and drying after a bath, swimming or outside play a necessity for healthy ears.

A small amount of light brown waxy secretion in the ear canals is normal, and some ear wax is necessary for the health of the ears. However, the insides of the ear flaps should be cleaned whenever there is an accumulation of wax, dirt, or debris. The VetraCare Pet Ear Wipe was designed specifically for this, allowing pet owners to wipe away harmful buildup and leaving the ear clean and refreshed.

If excessive waxy build-up, itching or odor is present, an over-the-counter ear cleanser, like VetraCare Pet Ear Rinse, can provide relief and soothe irritation. Simply apply a few sprays into the ear canal to help loosen wax or remove debris, massage the base of the ear to spread solution, and gently wipe out excess liquid from the ear canal.

Co-developed by a trauma & burn surgeon and a Ph.D. biologist, VetraCare Pet products work to reduce inflammation and irritation on pets skin, paws and ears by removing harmful bacteria and contaminants while maintaining continued hydration and long lasting protection. VetraCare Pet is different than many pet care products, as the ingredients in VetraCare were selected to not only effectively treat the injury or condition, but also work to improve the overall health of the animal.

VetraCare Pet product line is made in the USA, blended in an FDA regulated facility and built using the same advanced technology as our healthy human skin care products, ensuring every step is done not just to pet standards, but to human standards. This creates the ideal solution for pet skin care and ensures your animal gets safe, effective products.

Doctors Health Press Reports on Study: Combination of Vitamin D and Corticosteroids Most Effective in Treatment of Psoriasis

Boston, MA (PRWEB) April 11, 2013

Doctors Health Press, a division of Lombardi Publishing Corporation and publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is reporting on a new study finding that combining vitamin D and corticosteroids may be the most effective treatment for psoriasis.

As Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/womens-health/skin-care/vitamin-d-vs-corticosteroids-for-this-skin-problem) notes, psoriasis is one of those tricky conditions to treat. Often, the cause of psoriasis isnt clear, which can make finding an effective remedy more of a challenge. And while psoriasis does have some unpleasant symptoms, mainly in the form of skin irritations, most people treat the condition because they want to have smooth, healthy, glowing skin.

As the article Vitamin D vs. Corticosteroids for This Skin Problem reports, topical creams that contain corticosteroids are commonly prescribed to treat psoriasis. Corticosteroids are synthetic steroids that mimic natural hormones and are supposed to reduce inflammation and help stop allergic reactions. However, corticosteroids, while effective, can cause a number of prescription drug side effects in certain people. The more potent they are, the more likely a person is to suffer from side effects.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article states that an alternative treatment for psoriasis involves using topical creams with added vitamin D, which is thought to lessen the severity and length of a psoriasis outbreak, as well as reduce scaling and inflammation. Vitamin D also helps to slow the growth of skin cells, which is a good thing when it comes to psoriasis; the fewer skin cells that grow and become inflamedforming dry, scaly patchesthe better.

According to the Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article, researchers recently reviewed the performance of these two psoriasis treatments. In all, 177 trials were included in the researchers study. They found that vitamin D and corticosteroids worked better as a combined treatment than either treatment on its own. The researchers also noted that vitamin D was significantly less effective than potent corticosteroids when used to treat scalp psoriasis. However, they cautioned that most of the trials failed to report if long-term use of corticosteroids increases the risk for permanent skin dermal atrophy, a condition where the skin thins.

Do It Yourself Sunscreens Are A Very Bad Idea and Can Be Dangerous To Your Health, According to Lakes Dermatology Today

Las Vegas, Nevada (PRWEB) April 12, 2013

Sunscreen is a vital practice for preservation of one's skin especially for anti-aging purposes and prevention of skin cancer. While spending hours clicking through do-it-yourself projects on Pinterest, it was recently discovered that a very dangerous practice is taking place; homemade sunscreen recipes that made Dr. F. Victor Rueckl, dermatologist at Lakes Dermatology stop scrolling immediately.

With concerns about health risks associated with chemical sunscreens, it's no surprise that people are creating "natural" alternatives. Kitchens and bathrooms have become labs as ingredients like coconut oil, rosehip seed oil, shea butter, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (the last two are well-known physical UV ray blockers) are mixed up for sun protection. But does "Do It Yourself" sunscreen really work? And how do you even measure its SPF levels?

Do-it-yourself is great... but not for sunscreen. "One of the explanations people use for DIY sunscreens is that they don't want to pay 20 bucks for on-the-shelf products," says Dr. Rueck of Lakes Dermatology in Las Vegas. "Though there are actual UV-blocking ingredients that one can purchase online, there is a chemistry and an art to making sure they are stable and safely mixed and possess the amounts necessary for true skin protection," he continued.

Dr. Rueckl explained that FDA regulations are very rigorous largely in part to testing measure companies employ in order to advertise a product as sunscreen. "There are SPF, water-resistant and hypoallergenic variables that I wouldn't recommend people trying in order to save a few dollars. It's worth paying for quality production, ingredients and preparation."

Be wary of DIY sunscreen SPF value charts.

Dr. Rueckl believes that there is no real good way to test SPF levels at home either, so why take the chance of not having the protection you need and desire?

"It's not simply throwing the ingredients into a bowl and stirring with a spoon. The appropriate measurements need to be present or the active ingredient will likely end up in a clump at the bottom of your mixture and you won't have enough sunscreen to protect your skin," says Dr. Rueckl. "You could even end up with a formula that is uneven and blotchy with some areas of the body getting enough protection and others not at all."

When it comes to sun protection, you can't go wrong with common sense.

Allergic reactions to chemicals found in traditional sunscreens have been used as an argument for not wearing it at all or going the DIY route. However, Dr. Rueckl warns that the risks of not wearing the appropriate sunscreen correctly, outweighs wearing it by far.

"Any substance can irritate the skin. There are people out there who have an allergic reaction to cotton, latex, detergents, rubber, nickel or gold. If you try a sunscreen and it irritates your skin, stop using it and pick a different brand," says Dr. Rueckl."In the past, a lot of the carrier chemicals and preservatives in store-bought sunscreens included PABA, or para-aminobenzoic acid, which was known to form rashes. But many of the do-it-yourself sunscreens have oils in them and their preparations can cause breakouts and bumps and create a worse problem than sunburn."

Dr. Rueckl's final words of advice: "When you're outdoors doing the things you enjoy, it's important to wear sunscreen every day, all day. Many applications of the product during the day works best and remember, even if the weather is overcast, still apply sunscreen. There is no scientific evidence that a particular brand or type of sunscreen works better than others. But the best sunscreen is actually the one you are actually going to wear." (Preferably, one that's SPF 30 or greater, has some water resistance and is easy to apply every two to three hours or after getting wet.)

Financial Press: Miraculins Leads Future of Global Health Tech Innovation

Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) April 18, 2013

Diabetes rates in Canada have doubled over the past decade, with one in every three Canadians projected to have either diabetes or pre-diabetes by 2020. The shocking statistics were published this month by the Canadian Diabetes Association, which advised all health care professionals to screen wisely and diagnose precisely to help doctors identify the disease quicker.

The latest figures from the International Diabetes Federation reveal that currently 366 million people have diabetes worldwide, and 4.6 million deaths are due to diabetes. A staggering US$ 465 billion is spent on care for diabetes across the globe. This disease is one of the centurys greatest health challenges and remains on a relentlessly upwards trajectory. Both organizations agree that early and reliable diabetes testing is one measure that could potentially save more lives.

Enter Miraculins Inc., a Canadian medical diagnostic company focused on acquiring, developing and commercializing diagnostic tests and risk assessment technologies for unmet clinical needs, which has just announced it has signed a Term Sheet to acquire an innovative non-invasive screening test for diabetes that is already approved for sale in Canada and Europe.

The SCOUT system is the first non-invasive diabetes screening system designed to provide a highly sensitive and convenient method for screening for pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes based on the presence of diabetes-related biomarkers found in skin. Unlike current screening methods, a SCOUT test requires no blood draw, no fasting, and no waiting for a lab result.

The SCOUT represents an exceptional opportunity for Miraculins, says Christopher J. Moreau, Miraculins CEO and president. It adds to our story and builds on our value equation of offering non-invasive screening technology. We have been in negotiations for some time with the owners to acquire the SCOUT - which is US based.

Miraculins currently works with products that already have worldwide potential. The company already has two technology programs that have captured the attention of the global healthcare industry because of their unique value.

The first is a skin cholesterol test called PreVu, and the second technology is for a disease called preeclampsia, a devastating and growing disease of pregnancy affecting 5 to 8 percent of women worldwide regardless of ethnicity.

The PreVu Non-Invasive Skin Cholesterol Point of Care Test is a completely painless and non-invasive test, which involves no blood draw or needles, requires no overnight fasting and involves no handling of potentially hazardous biomaterials. The test is conducted on the palm of the hand in less than five minutes with results being immediately available, facilitating point of care consultation and a next steps discussion.

Skin cholesterol is an important new biomarker in assessing risk of coronary artery disease, Moreau says. As such, the PreVu test can serve as a convenient first step in the global risk assessment process, reaching those who have not been assessed, or who avoid blood testing, and providing them with a tipping point for greater personal action and resolve in looking after their heart health.

Coronary artery disease is a leading cause of death in Canada and a difficult condition to detect. There are more than 7.2 million heart attacks globally every year and growing, and 540 million blood cholesterol tests performed annually worldwide.

Miraculins closed on the PreVu transaction in the fall of 2010. It took the company about two years to get the product ready for market.

For Miraculins to manufacture and sell a diagnostic device, we needed to become International Standards Organization (ISO) certified, and that took us about a year, explains Moreau. Our company had to undergo tremendous change. We were basically a research and development company prior to acquiring the PreVu, and then we had to go through all these significant changes to become certified. It was a great exercise because it forced us a company to make sure that all of our systems and processes were consistent with the international standard.

The second lead technology Miraculins has developed is for a serious disease of pregnancy called preeclampsia. The disease affects more than 6.4 million pregnancies per year in the US and 134 million worldwide, with a cost of more than $ 3 billion annually to the global healthcare system.

Preeclampsias rapidly progressive condition, characterized by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine, can quickly accelerate and result in seizure, coma, kidney failure and death for both mother and child. The technology was being advanced through a collaborative research and option agreement with Alere, Inc.; one of the worlds largest diagnostic companies with professional and consumer offerings in over 100 disease categories, and a market capitalization of $ 2 billion. Alere recently licensed from Miraculins the lead marker in the companys preeclampsia program.

We were excited to have partnered a key part of our preeclampsia technology with a major international diagnostics company and they are responsible for advancing a test through regulatory approval and on to commercial sales. says Moreau.

Miraculins business model is to license and acquire business technology that can either be acquired from a research institution or a university, or another company.

We are one of a handful of Canadian diagnostic companies that have been able to get a product through the regulatory approval process required so that we can begin to start selling, Moreau says.

The way we found out about the SCOUT opportunity was through one of our distribution partners in Canada called Pear Healthcare, which represents us in the retail pharmacy market. There are striking similarities with the SCOUT and PreVu. It's non-invasive and it involves taking a reading of the skin, and even though the two tests are different what I found interesting was that we are looking for a risk marker for heart disease, and the SCOUT is identifying people who are pre-diabetic, since diabetes is also a risk factor for heart disease.

In today's technologically advanced world, tests that are non-invasive will be the future, so it was interesting that PreVu was being represented by Pear Healthcare while they were simultaneously representing the SCOUT, Moreau says.

Miraculins partnered with Pear Healthcare last year and initially launched a PreVu pilot program with London Drugs, one of western Canadas leading pharmacy chains, in the fall of 2012. Based on the success of that pilot, London agreed to offer the PreVu test at one day rotating clinics at all of its 76 locations. Miraculins then secured a launch agreement with the 350 store PharmaChoice pharmacy network earlier this year to introduce the PreVu test in Ontario and Atlantic Canada in the spring of 2013, through a Phase One launch in up to 50 of its stores, with the hope of expanding the program to all of the stores in the fall.

About three months ago we heard that a private US based company called Veralight, the owners and developers of the SCOUT, were having financial difficulty, Moreau says.

We reached out to them and we emerged as the lead potential merger and acquisition partner for this technology. A significant factor in having Miraculins considered as a potential acquirer of the Scout is that many of the markets we envision selling the PreVu test into would be identical for the SCOUT. From that context, we think it's a good fit because we can assume the operational aspects of the SCOUT by only adding incremental costs to our overhead and without dramatically adding to our sales and marketing budget.

Miraculins is designed to have more than one product. As a medical diagnostic development company, Miraculins has

About Bees

Bees are insects that are related to wasps and ants and there are approximately 20,000 known species of bees found on every continent except Antarctica. Honeybees (Apis mellifera) are not native to the United States as they were introduced by Europeans to produce honey and beeswax. Honeybees are responsible for pollinating 80% of flowering crops, and without them the worlds food supply would be dramatically reduced.

As people become more conscious of the important role that honeybees play in their daily lives, beekeeping is becoming more main stream and is now allowed in many urban and suburban municipalities. Since 2006, beekeepers in the North America and Europe have noticed a mystifying occurrence called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) in which worker bees from a beehive or European honey bee colony abruptly disappear, leaving the queen and insect larvae behind, unable to fend for themselves. While such disappearances have occurred throughout the history of apiculture, the term colony collapse disorder was first applied to a drastic rise in the number of disappearances of Western honey bee colonies in North America in late 2006.

In a 2013, a formal review by the European Food Safety Authority stated that recent studies show that neonicotinoid pesticides, some of the most widely-used pesticides in the world, pose an unacceptably high risk to bees, and that the industry-sponsored science upon which regulatory agencies' claims of safety have relied is flawed and possibly deliberately deceptive.

Honey has been used by humans since ancient times for its health benefits and as a sweetener and flavoring for many foods and beverages, with tea being the most popular. Next to maple syrup, it is the most popular natural sweetener in North America.

Honey bees make honey by collecting nectar from flowers and regurgitating it into beeswax honeycombs inside their hive. Beeswax is a natural wax produced in the hive of honey bees of the genus Apis and its most popular uses are beeswax candles and as an ingredient in natural skin care products.

The flavor and color of honey is determined by the type of flower the bees gather the nectar from; therefore, when cooking or baking with honey it is a good idea to taste the honey before using it in a recipe. For example; a dark honey like tulip poplar-black locust honey will result in a strong, heavy, pungent flavor, whereas orange blossom honey will result in a delicate orange flavor. Dark-colored honey is considered to be higher in minerals and antioxidants than light-colored honey, and one of the most well-known dark colored honeys is buckwheat honey. Raw buckwheat honey contains a higher amount of minerals and an antioxidant called polyphenol, which gives it its dark color. The health benefits of buckwheat honey are many and well known.

If you are planning to buy honey for its health benefits, it must be raw honey. Heating honey (pasteurization) destroys all of the pollen, enzymes, propolis, vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants, minerals and aromatics. Honey that has been heated and filtered is called commercial, regular or liquid honey. The rawest honey available is comb honey which is sections of the hexagonal-shaped beeswax cells of the honeycomb that contain raw honey that have been cut from the wooden frames of a beehive.

Using raw honey is a long-term investment strategy for optimal health and personal care; the dividends are overall mental, physical and spiritual well being. Like a blue chip stock, raw honey should be included in any health-conscious consumers immune system boosting portfolio and the return on investment of substituting honey for refined sugar in the human diet is incalculable.

Pure honey is kosher since kosher honey must be 100% honey with no additives or dilutions and to get the best price when buying large quantities of honey, look for a company that sells bulk or wholesale honey.

Organic honey from the United States is a myth because the country is too developed and uses too many agricultural and industrial chemicals for the production of organic honey. Honey bees are free-roaming, wild creatures and it is impossible guarantee that while foraging they have not come in contact with prohibited substances, like pesticides.

Another product made by honey bees and used by humans is bee propolis. Propolis is a resinous substance that honey bees collect from tree buds and bark or other botanical sources and mixed with beeswax, nectar and pollen. This mixture is used by bees to seal gaps in the hive and by humans for its health benefits and as a traditional, natural or homeopathic medicine.

Botox FDA Issues Fraud Alert to U.S. Health Care Practitioners

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) April 26, 2013

On April 26, 2013, the Food and Drug Administration issued an alert on its website to all health care practitioners that fraudulent version of the drug Botox, manufactured by Allergan, Inc. are being sold to medical practices in the U.S. (go to: goo.gl/iKRXI). Botox has FDA approval to treat migraine headaches, overactive bladders, hyperhidrosis (underarm sweating), and wrinkles.

"It really is an ongoing battle that the FDA is fighting against these counterfeiters, says Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills. It was only a few months ago that the FDA released a list of physicians that had purchased unapproved Botox from a Canadian pharmacy.

According to the alert, a company operating under numerous aliases including Onlinebotox and OnlineBotoxPharmacy is placing vials labeled as foreign manufactured Botox into counterfeit outside cartons. Despite the internet-related names the company was not selling the counterfeit drug online but was sending mass faxes to solicit sales from medical offices.

Importantly, the FDA noted that only authentic Allergan-manufactured and FDA-approved Botox can be considered safe and effective for its approved uses. Even legitimately produced foreign Botox is not FDA approved for sale in the U.S.

Given that the FDA issued a list of medical providers that purchased unapproved Botox, it is apparent that consumers cannot always rely on others to protect their safety, says Dr. Ourian. Thats why I created a six-point Botox checklist for anyone interested in getting a Botox treatment.

Pet Health Company, Healthy Brands for Life, Releases Liquid Bandage for Dogs and Cats

Nixa, MO (PRWEB) April 29, 2013

Cuts and scrapes are common on dog and cats, especially pets that spend a lot of time outdoors. When a pet gets a minor cut or abrasion it can often be difficult to get that wound to heal and pets are more susceptible to foreign materials such as fur, dirt or gravel getting into the wound and causing an infection. Dogs and cats dont understand the importance of leaving a wrap or bandage alone therefore conventional bandages are often difficult to use on animals.

The Vetra Care Pet Liquid Bandage was created to be used in place of traditional bandages for easy, gentle application. It utilizes the FDA approved ingredient, Allantoin, to provide a layer of protection to the area and keep bacteria and debris out of the wound. It is ideal for hard to dress areas of the pet or those places where wrapping or a bandage is impractical. Once applied the Vetra Care Pet Liquid Bandage controls moisture around the wound while remaining breathable to speed up healing.

Mens Health Common Skin Problems and Solutions

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) April 29, 2013

According to an April 22, 2013 Fox News article mens skin is exposed to a myriad of elements and harsh conditions, such as UV rays, chemicals, and infections. As such, a number of treatments for conditions such as acne, wrinkles, and rashes have been developed. These treatments, ranging from skin creams to products with salicylic acid and aloe vera have proven to be effective in treating these concerns (Go to goo.gl/jVjNN).

As it says in the report, acne is a medical condition that may sometimes require a medical solution, says Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills. Over-the-counter skin washes may be the first line of treatment for those who get pimples occasionally.

One of the worst things to do to the skin is expose it to the sun. Depending on one's complexion, the effects of just a little sun even in winter can be problematic. Before exposure, the best prevention is sunscreen and keeping covered. The report suggests that once a burn has happened, use of vitamin E is a good first step. Take a liquid gel supplement tab and cut it in half. Then, rub the liquid over the area that is affected.

Every day I tell my patients to stay out of the sun and when they cant, to cover up and use sun block. But more than anything else in the article, I agree with the recommendation to quit smoking, says Dr. Ourian. Aside from the obvious health benefits, smoking will prematurely age the skin.

Dr. Ourian has been a pioneer in laser technology and non-invasive aesthetic procedures including Restylane, Juv

Zion Health Announces Vegan-Friendly Line of Ancient Clay Organic Soaps and Healing Native Remedies; Now Available at Veggie Monster in Woodside, NY.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) May 06, 2013

Zion Health is proud to announce that local Queens neighborhood natural grocer Veggiemonster will now carry Zion's Ancient Clay Soaps and native remedies containing a unique high grade edible clay called calcium montmorillonite (Kanwa) clay. These natural soaps are formulated to nourish and cleanse the skin without causing irritation.

A family-owned and operated high-quality health food store,Veggiemonster is committed to providing fresh and wholesome produce and groceries to their vegetarian, vegan and health-conscious neighbors. Over the past three years, Veggiemonster has grown to carry essential lines of organic groceries, vegetarian vitamins and natural body care products. The most recent addition includes Zion Health's healing clay soaps and native clay remedies.

Kanwa clay is a well-known folk medicine remedy for numerous health and skin disorders. According to Michel Abhesera, author of The Healing Clay, bentonite clay was called Ee-Wah-Kee, meaning The Mud That Heals, by Native Americans and applied by native cultures on skin to clear acne, eczema and infected wounds. More recently, Kanwa clay was discovered to hold a negative charge and attract positively charged toxins, viruses and bacteria. MIT scientist Dr. Robert T. Martin notes that calcium bentonite clay has a large surface area that enhances its adsorption and in turn, its ability to attract positively charged particles. Zion Health's clay products harness the detoxifying action of Kanwa clay in their organic soaps and full product line to absorb environmental pollutants on the skin, including heavy metals and harmful bacteria.

As a supporter of natural, vegan and cruelty-free body care products, Zion Health natural soaps are plant based and not tested on animals. The organic clay soaps are also nutrient rich, as kanwa clay provides more than 60 trace minerals.
