Doctors Health Press Reports on Study: Combination of Vitamin D and Corticosteroids Most Effective in Treatment of Psoriasis

Boston, MA (PRWEB) April 11, 2013

Doctors Health Press, a division of Lombardi Publishing Corporation and publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is reporting on a new study finding that combining vitamin D and corticosteroids may be the most effective treatment for psoriasis.

As Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/womens-health/skin-care/vitamin-d-vs-corticosteroids-for-this-skin-problem) notes, psoriasis is one of those tricky conditions to treat. Often, the cause of psoriasis isnt clear, which can make finding an effective remedy more of a challenge. And while psoriasis does have some unpleasant symptoms, mainly in the form of skin irritations, most people treat the condition because they want to have smooth, healthy, glowing skin.

As the article Vitamin D vs. Corticosteroids for This Skin Problem reports, topical creams that contain corticosteroids are commonly prescribed to treat psoriasis. Corticosteroids are synthetic steroids that mimic natural hormones and are supposed to reduce inflammation and help stop allergic reactions. However, corticosteroids, while effective, can cause a number of prescription drug side effects in certain people. The more potent they are, the more likely a person is to suffer from side effects.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article states that an alternative treatment for psoriasis involves using topical creams with added vitamin D, which is thought to lessen the severity and length of a psoriasis outbreak, as well as reduce scaling and inflammation. Vitamin D also helps to slow the growth of skin cells, which is a good thing when it comes to psoriasis; the fewer skin cells that grow and become inflamedforming dry, scaly patchesthe better.

According to the Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article, researchers recently reviewed the performance of these two psoriasis treatments. In all, 177 trials were included in the researchers study. They found that vitamin D and corticosteroids worked better as a combined treatment than either treatment on its own. The researchers also noted that vitamin D was significantly less effective than potent corticosteroids when used to treat scalp psoriasis. However, they cautioned that most of the trials failed to report if long-term use of corticosteroids increases the risk for permanent skin dermal atrophy, a condition where the skin thins.

Great HealthWorks, Inc., Makers of Omega XL, Reports University of Kansas Medical Center Study: Omega-3s Support Healthier Pregnancies and Birth Weight

(PRWEB) May 13, 2013

Due to widespread dietary deficiencies of essential omega-3 fatty acids, doctors typically recommend that pregnant women add an Omega-3 supplement to their pre and postnatal care regimen. Recent research, conducted at the University of Kansas Medical Center and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggests supplementing pregnant mothers with omega-3 fatty acid, such as found in Omega XL, can lead to longer gestations and healthier birth weights.

The Kansans City researchers designed a double-blind, randomized placebo controlled trial - long considered the gold standard in clinical research that looked at a group of 350 pregnant women, from the 20th week of gestation to birth, who were given either 600 mg of omega-3 DHA daily, or a placebo. Blood was analyzed for red blood cell phospholipid DHA upon enrolment in the study and at birth, from both mom as well as from the umbilical cord.

The blood samples from the group supplemented with DHA, compared to the placebo group, registered higher levels of phospholipid DHA both maternally and at the umbilical cord. An analysis of the pregnancies showed that the DHA group experienced longer gestation duration, greater birth weight and infant size (measured in length and head circumference) than the placebo group. In addition, the DHA group experienced fewer births before 34 weeks, and shorter hospital stays for infants born preterm than did the placebo group.

This study demonstrated that 600mg per day of Omega-3 fatty acid DHA was safe and helped to promote healthy fetal development, overall pregnancy wellness and a reduction in preterm births. The researchers stated as to the significance of the findings: a reduction in early preterm and very-low birth weight could be important clinical and public health outcomes of DHA supplementation.

These findings come on the heels of prior prenatal and pediatric research which suggests that omega-3 supplementation promotes neurological and intellectual development, supports the brain and eyes, increases cognitive function, and enhances visual learning and memory in infants and young children.

Omega XL is one of only two Omega 3 supplements sold in the world that contains the patented stabilized marine lipid extract PCSO-524 derived only from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel, with 30 healthy fatty acids including DHA and EPA. Allegheny General Hospital Cardiovascular Institute Becomes Exclusive Pittsburgh Site for Study of Novel Coronary Artery Disease Device

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) May 20, 2013

Interventional cardiologist Tony Farah, MD, and his colleagues at the Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) Cardiovascular Institute have helped pioneer many breakthroughs in the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD) over the past three decades, from new disease-fighting medications to life-saving procedures such as balloon angioplasty and coronary artery stent implantation.

Today, AGH officials announced that the hospital will once again play a prominent role in the study of a novel, first-of-its kind investigational device for CAD that many believe could be the next revolution in the treatment of a disease that strikes more than one million people annually in the United States, claims nearly 500,000 lives each year and is the leading cause of death for both men and women.

Under Dr. Farahs direction, AGH has been selected to join the ABSORB III clinical trial, a multi-center international study exploring a unique bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS), a small mesh tube that is designed to open a blocked artery and then fully dissolve over time, leaving the vessel free of a permanent metallic implant.

The FDA-approved study of the drug-eluting AbsorbTM BVS, made by healthcare company Abbott, is expected to enroll approximately 2,250 patients over the next 12 months, up to 200 of who could enter the trial at AGH.

Across every discipline in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, physicians at Allegheny General Hospital continue to set new standards of patient care through pioneering research and clinical ingenuity. The ABSORB study is just the latest example of the innovation that has been a hallmark of our cardiovascular program, said Dr. Farah, the hospitals principal investigator in the ABSORB III clinical trial.

Coronary artery disease is a condition in which one or more arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrowed, putting patients at risk of a heart attack and cardiac death. Similar to conventional metallic stents, the Absorb device is designed to open a blocked heart vessel and restore blood flow to the heart.

Unlike metallic stents, however, which are permanently implanted into the blood vessel, Abbotts Absorb is a uniquely engineered, temporary scaffold that provides support to the vessel until the artery can stay open on its own. Made of polylactide, a naturally dissolvable material that is commonly used in medical implants (such as dissolving sutures), the device dissolves into the blood vessel after its work has been done.

According to Dr. Farah, the potential advantages of a bioresorbable scaffold device are significant when it comes to the long-term management of CAD patients.

With the standardization of balloon angioplasty and stent implantation and the vast experience that we have accumulated in the use of these techniques, it has become apparent that the most effective and safe means of restoring natural blood vessel function in the setting of coronary disease is ultimately a treatment that leaves nothing behind in the vessel which was the original idea of angioplasty. The Absorb device moves us in the direction of that goal, Dr. Farah said.

Balloon angioplasty is a procedure in which a balloon tipped catheter is used to open an area of arterial blockage. The catheter is delivered into the artery through the skin via a small incision in the groin or arm.

Deployed in a similar fashion, stents evolved to help prevent a complication of angioplasty in which the previously opened lesion in the artery gradually re-narrows from continuing plaque build-up a condition called restenosis. To further improve stent performance, the technology was more recently advanced to include drug-eluting devices coated with medications designed to further inhibit the growth of plaque at the treatment site.

For all their effectiveness at improving the outcomes of many patients with CAD, the risks of conventional, permanently placed stents are not insignificant, Dr. Farah said.

Patients receiving stents typically require prolonged use of blood thinning medications to prevent blood clots from forming within the device, which may cause sudden heart attacks. Stented lesions are also still prone to restenosis, particularly among one of the largest subsets of patients at risk for CAD diabetics.

And for patients with advanced coronary disease, the presence of stents in multiple vessels has the potential to limit future heart surgery options, if needed.

Because of these concerns, there has always been a desire to find a better way to accomplish the pivotal short term function of stents, without the long-term complications, Dr. Farah said.

International studies to date of the Absorb device have been extremely encouraging and the start of the ABSORB III U.S. clinical trial follows the recent commercial launch of Absorb in Europe and parts of Latin America, Asia and India.

Absorb III is a prospective, randomized study that will compare Abbotts drug-eluting Absorb BVS devise to the companys XIENCETM family of drug eluting metallic stents. Both devices deliver everolimus, an anti-proliferative drug that has been shown to inhibit in-stent plaque growth in coronary vessels.

The primary endpoint of the trial is target lesion failure, a combined measure of safety and efficacy, at one year. In addition, a subset of patients within the trial will be evaluated for novel endpoints such as vasomotion, a measure of how much natural motion returns to the vessel as Absorb dissolves into the arterial tissue.

Dr. Farah said many patients with CAD who are good candidates for stent placement will be eligible for enrollment in the study. Those with questions about the clinical trial can contact Joe Carothers at 412-359-4156.

Adult Acne Treatment Explains a New Upcoming Study that may Change the Acne Treatment Industry

Miami, FL (PRWEB) June 05, 2013

Products containing probiotics have become a recent trend in food, and healthcare industries, specifically in the digestive and skin care market. Recent news from CNN sheds light on an upcoming study by the California Institute of Technology that aims to further explore the associated health benefits of probiotics, and microbes. Probiotic Action spokesman Fernando Perez explains details of the study, and how it may change the skincare industry, and what it means for acne sufferers.

For centuries, cultures have used probiotic products like yogurt and kefir style beverages with the belief that the probiotics, (bacteria) and microbes in their food held extraordinary benefits. In the past few decades, western culture has capitalized on the strains of bacteria, microbes, and yeasts linked to improve intestinal, and digestive function by selling them in pill form. With the influx of probiotics in the marketplace, users and physicians alike have made many additional health claims to using probiotics, some, without proper research being done. As stated in Mazimanians interview, his study aims to further explore the benefits of existing probiotics, as well as a new human microbiome that may have additional health benefits that probiotics claim to have.

Although the article neglects to mention how these studies will affect the producers in probiotic marketplace, Fernando Perez of Probiotic Action shares industry insight how the study may affect acne treatment producers,

What is exciting about using probiotics for acne is that none of the existing studies on probiotics have determined any negative side effects, and researchers agree that the full health benefits have still not been discovered. As a natural acne remedy one can only make so many claims on the effectiveness, and health benefits of using a probiotic acne treatment, this study may allow us and other probiotic supplement producers the ability to sell products with an FDA seal and guarantee effectiveness, unlike other supplements and acne treatments whose products are not regulated.

Perez continued that if Mazimanians findings show increased health benefits, and new strains of effective probiotics the market price for natural acne remedies, and acne treatments could also see drastic changes, and increased competition.

For more information on the study see links from the CNN article mentioned above. For information on using probiotics for acne, visit Probioticaction.com.

Probiotic Action is an advanced acne treatment that uses Probiotics for acne containing the good bacteria that is naturally found on healthy human skin. By using probiotics, Probiotic Action is an effective treatment that restores the normal bacteria content on skin, while battling what causes acne. Probiotic Action will successfully clear skin when used as an adult acne treatment while protecting skin against bad bacteria, free radicals, and pollutants*.

Omega XL Reports New Independent Study: Low-mercury fish reduce heart attack risk

Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) January 07, 2013

Mercury levels in fish have long been an ongoing concern for many consumers. To quantify the risk of mercury in fish, a joint team of researchers out of Sweden and Finland have conducted a study aimed at creating a risk-benefit model that would shed light on the risk of mercury consumption, versus the value of omega-3 fatty acids - such as found in Omega XL- which have been linked to everything from heart health to cognitive function, improved eyesight and inflammatory joint pain relief.

The study, published in the October issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, examined mercury levels and omega-3 concentrations in the hair and blood samples of 361 Swedish men and 211 men from Finland, all of whom had suffered from a heart attack.

While methyl mercury in fish may, indeed, pose a health risk, even a small increase in fish consumption was found to prevent 7 percent of heart attacks in men, as long as mercury levels remained low.

The obvious conclusion to the study is to eat small fish and avoid large predatory species that contain a lot more mercury than smaller ones. Nevertheless, mercury is still present in smaller fish, only to a lesser degree than bigger fish. This is why many health care professionals recommend consumers choose purified, high potency omega-3 supplements in order to get all the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, with none of the health risks associated with dietary toxins such as mercury.

Bel Marra Health Reports on a New Study: Researchers Have Found a Link Between Hair Color and Pain Tolerance

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) February 26, 2013

Bel Marra Health, who offers high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, is reporting on a new research that shows there is now considered to be a link between hair color and pain tolerance.

As Bel Marra Health reports in its article (http://www.belmarrahealth.com/pain-management/pain-myths-do-red-heads-feel-more-pain/) anesthesiologists have long believed that redheads need higher levels of anesthesia in order to be knocked out.

Researchers at Southampton University Hospital conducted a study that actually confirms this belief. For the study, the researchers recruited redheads as well as people with black, brown and blond hair and they gave them anesthesia and then gave them small electric shocks on their thighs. The researchers found that the redheads needed 20 percent more anesthesia in order to relieve the pain caused by the shocks. An unrelated study also found that redheaded men and women actually require 20 percent more anesthesia in order to experience pain relief than the rest of the population.

Another study compared the pain tolerance of redheads to the pain tolerance of brunettes. The volunteers for the study were exposed to very cold temperatures and the redheads claimed that they felt a chilling pain at 6 degrees C. The brunettes on the other hand, did not report feeling a chilling pain until the temperature dropped to zero.

Other studies have found that redheads bruise more easily and they not only experience a much greater fear of the pain associated with visiting the dentist, they are also twice as likely to avoid dental procedures because of their fear. The exact reason why redheads experience pain differently than their non-ginger counterparts is unknown, but scientists suspect that it has something to do with the mutation of a certain gene, called the MC1R gene.

New 2012 Professional Salon Industry Haircare Study Shows Solid Growth for Salon Services and Retail Sales

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) March 06, 2013

Total revenues for all salon industry services (hair, skin, nails) plus salon retail grew at a robust 4.1% to $ 75.38 billion, according to the new 2012 Professional Salon Industry Haircare Study from Professional Consultants & Resources, the leading salon industry strategic consultants and data source. The total U.S. salon haircare market segment (services plus retail) registered $ 63.33 billion and grew at about 3.3%. There are nearly 288,300 salons and barbershops in the United States.

The professional beauty industry is strongly evolving," says Cyrus Bulsara, president. Mens salon/barber services and product sales showed nearly twice the growth of unisex salons. The nail category continued to grow strong at nearly four times salon market growth. Continuing the 2011 trends, haircolor, keratin/smoothing services and basic cutting and styling services were major growth-drivers. Clients and stylists continued to move from traditional independent salons and mid-tier chains to chair/suite rentals, family-economy chains and upscale men's barbershop chains. The continued growth of blow-dry bars added to total service growth.

Major study highlights, current style trends and high-growth areas indicate robust salon industry growth in the future:

Find Out Why Route One Pumpkins Skin Care Products Are Natural, and Free of Known Endocrine Disruptors, Chemicals Currently Implicated by a Recent WHO Study

Half Moon Bay, CA (PRWEB) March 13, 2013

Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that may interfere with the bodys hormonal balance and produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects in both humans and wildlife. A wide range of substances, both natural and man-made, are thought to cause endocrine disruption, including pharmaceuticals, dioxin and dioxin-like compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls, DDT and other pesticides, and plasticizers such as bisphenol A. The greatest concern related to the disturbance of hormonal balance is the early onset of cancers, especially breast and prostate.(1) In a 2012 publication by the National Institute of Environmental Health Studies, endocrine disruption has also recently been implicated in a study of Autism by interupting oxytocin and thyroid hormone signaling pathways. (2)

Recently, on February 19th 2013, an international team of experts in a joint effort by by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme reported that evidence linking hormone-mimicking chemicals to human health problems has grown stronger over the past decade, becoming a global threat that should be addressed. The panel of 16 scientists from 10 nations found that endocrine-related diseases and disorders are on the rise, with emerging evidence for adverse reproductive outcomes and mounting evidence" for effects on thyroids, brains and metabolism. The study concludes that chronic disease worldwide is higher than ever because of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals.

Frankly, for BPA, the science is done. Flame retardants, phthalates the science is done, Professor R Thomas Zoeller of Umass, senior editor and senior writer for the paper said. We have more than enough information on these chemicals to make the reasonable decision to ban, or at least take steps to limit exposure. They dont stay in the environment long but people are exposed to them all the time so its the same effect... (3)

Phthalates mimic hormones and have been linked to numerous health problems, but remain legal. On Feb 2, a study quoted by the Daily Green was released that linked baby powder, lotion and shampoo to higher levels of phthalates in babies' bodies. To avoid phthalates, look for products -like Route One Pumpkins - labeled phthalate-free or read labels for their chemical names, or abbreviations: DBP (di-n-butyl phthalate) and DEP (diethyl phthalate) are often found in personal care products, including nail polishes, deodorants, perfumes and cologne, aftershave lotions, shampoos, hair gels and hand lotions. DEHP (di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate or Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) is used in PVC plastics, including some medical devices.BzBP (benzylbutyl phthalate) is used in some flooring, car products and personal care products. DMP (dimethyl phthalate) is used in insect repellent and some plastics.

Phytoestrogen: soybeans are the most significant dietary source of isoflavones, an class of phytoestrogen. Consumption of soy food or phytoestrogen supplements has been frequently associated with beneficial health effects, however the potentially adverse effects on development, fertility, and the reproductive and endocrine systems are likely under-appreciated. Soy and soy-derived products contain isoflavones that mimic the actions of estrogens and may exert adverse effects on male fertility and studies have shown decreased sperm count in men eating higher quantities of soy in their diet. It is not known whether there is a difference between consumption of organic/non-GMO soy and the more dominant genetically-modified soy grown in the US and subjected to higher use of pesticides. Sensitive populations such as pregnant women should weigh consumption carefully to avoid endocrine disruption.

BPA stands for bisphenol A. BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s. In a February 2013 radio interview Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Linda S. Birnbaum, PhD discussed the status of the research and how BPA can seep into food or beverages from containers that are made with BPA or into your body when you handle products made with BPA. To avoid BPA, avoid plastics with the recycled symbol 7 on the bottom or select plastics labeled BPA-free, use glass or other materials to store and reheat food and just say no to receipts and thermal papers, which commonly have BPA that is absorbed through your skin (use email options at ATMs, for example). A new study quoted by Rodale (publisher of Prevention magazine) supporting that theory suggests that humans also absorb BPA through the skin even after handling cash-register receipts for just a few seconds. (4) (5)

One problem concerning those studying endocrine-disrupting chemicals is the vast number of them about 800 are known and how they may interact with one another. Theyre in a variety of goods such as pesticides, flame retardants, plastics, cosmetics and canned foods and research has only touched the tip of the iceberg, according to the WHO report, stating that the vast majority of chemicals in current commercial use have not been tested at all. Several groups, including the National Institute of environmental health are working on testing methods. (6)

Route One Pumpkins products and packaging are free of phthalates, BPA, soy ingredients, petroleum products, parabens,, artificial colors and fragrances. Also vegan-free of animal products and not tested on animals. Certified by Leaping Bunny. Available at http://www.RouteOnePumpkins.com and quality natural retailers.

Dr Jason Diamond Reviews ASPS Study of Most Popular Cosmetic Surgery Procedures in America

Beverly Hills, California (PRWEB) April 01, 2013

Dr. Jason Diamond reviews the latest results from The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently published list of the top five cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States and offers tips on how to choose a plastic surgeon.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number one cosmetic procedure in 2012 was breast augmentation with 286,000 surgeries, a number that declined 7% from the prior year. 246,000 patients underwent nose reshaping in 2012, unchanged from 2011. Eyelid surgery saw a modest increase of 4% from 2011, bringing the total number to 204,000. Approximately 202,000 people chose liposuction in 2012 (a 1% decline). 126,000 patients sought out a plastic surgeon for a facelift in 2012, an increase of 6%.

The statistics are consistent with the trends Dr. Jason Diamond sees in his busy Beverly Hills medical practice. Using the latest medical technology and research, says Dr. Diamond. plastic surgeons and skin care professionals are now able to offer a range of alternatives for patients looking to reduce lines and wrinkles and achieve younger looking skin.

Despite struggling growth numbers and unemployment above historic averages, Americans spent close to $ 11 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2012. Although $ 6.7 billion was spent on surgical procedures, alternative procedures remain very popular. Americans spent $ 2 billion on injectable procedures; $ 1.8 billion on skin rejuvenation procedures; and over $ 483 million was spent on other nonsurgical procedures, such as laser hair removal and laser treatment of varicose and spider veins.

It is also important to meet with the doctor, preferably in person before the surgery. Dr. Jason Diamond reviews cosmetic goals, expectations and procedures with every patient before surgery. When meeting with a plastic surgeon, Dr. Diamond recommends that patients ask the following questions:

Hair Loss Reveals Surprising Heart Attack Risks in Men, Study Finds

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) April 02, 2013

Hair loss could be an indicator of more serious health risks, according to a new study by the American Heart Association. The study found that people with three visible aging signs are at a higher risk for heart attack and heart disease. One of the three aging signs were hair loss or a receding hairline.

Hair loss included charateristics such as a receding hairline at the temples and a bald spot on the back or on the top of the scalp.

The Danish study by the American Heart Association, where researchers analyzed about 11,000 men and women aged 40 and older, found some interesting results. Of the participants, 3,041 of them developed heart disease and 1,708 suffered a heart attack over 35 years of follow-up by the researchers. Hair loss was one of the four signs of heart disease that weren't as obvious as smoking or obesity. From these results, the study found that men with three aging characteristics were at 57% higher risk for a heart attack and 39% higher risk for heart disease.

Beverly Hills Hair Restoration, a hair transplant clinic in Los Angeles, advises that those experiencing hair loss determine what is causing the condition. A hair and scalp analysis, says Medical Director John Kahen, M.D., can determine if the hair loss is an indicator of a more serious health condition. While there is no way to determine if your genetic hair loss is an indicator of heart conditions later in life, more education and knowledge about the condition is a positive step, said the director.

Keratin Complex Retailer NewVo Beauty Responds to Damaged Hair Study

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) April 03, 2013

On April 3, Sara Greenstone, a spokesperson from online beauty supply store NewVo Beauty, issues a response to a Business Courier article revealing many women report having damaged hair.

According to Business Courier, more than half of women in the U.S. report having damaged hair. In a new study conducted by Procter & Gamble, about 57 percent of women in major cities say they have damaged hair. The article says the leading causes of hair damage are combing hair when wet, keeping hair in a ponytail and scalp scratching.

Greenstone says most women care about the way their hair looks, but dont realize the damage endured from styling. Keeping your hair tied back in a ponytail is not healthy because the hair band breaks hair, she says. Its better to keep hair loosely pinned back or tied up with a softer type of hair tie. This could help when reducing breakage.

Though combing through wet hair could be damaging and increase hair loss, Greenstone says heating tools are the real culprits. Hair is healthiest when it air dries, she says. Unfortunately, most women dont want to risk walking out the door with unkempt hair. Constantly blow drying, straightening and curling hair leads to hair thinning, split ends and damaged strands. Always remember to use an iron guard or thermal protection spray to coat the hair before styling.

Greenstone suggests replacing old hair care products with new, sulfate-free, paraben free shampoo and conditioner to avoid damaging hair. Keratin Complex products put essential proteins back into your hair, she says. Without the sulfates and parabens drying it out, your hair can grow healthier and repair itself. Though natural, organic shampoos might be a bit pricier, they are worth it.

NewVo Beauty sells over 5,000 professional beauty salon products. Committed to providing quality, hard to find products and great service, NewVo Beauty offers high-demand salon merchandise at affordable prices. Tariq Drabu Welcomes New Study into Mercury Screening Tests

(PRWEB) April 20, 2013

Leading Manchester dentist Tariq Drabu, the owner of Langley Dental Practice in Middleton Manchester today welcomed the findings of new recent research which indicates that a common test used to determine mercury exposure from dental amalgam fillings may significantly overestimate the amount of the toxic metal released from fillings. It is acknowledged that dental amalgam fillings over time slowly release mercury vapour into the mouth. What remains in dispute is the amount of mercury released and also the question of whether this exposure presents a significant health risk. Public health studies often make the assumption that mercury in urine (which is composed mostly of inorganic mercury) can be used to estimate exposure to mercury vapour from amalgam fillings.

Tariq Drabu continued that these same studies often use mercury in hair (which is composed mostly of organic mercury) to estimate exposure to organic mercury from a person's diet. But a University of Michigan study that measured mercury isotopes in the hair and urine from 12 Michigan dentists found that their urine contained a mix of mercury from two sources: the consumption of fish containing organic mercury and inorganic mercury vapour from the dentists' own amalgam fillings. The study findings can be found here.

Commenting on the findings Tariq Drabu said this study casts doubt on the fact that all mercury urine is derived from vapour from dental amalgam. If you extrapolate the results it has serious implications for looking at the health risks of mercury vapour derived from dental amalgam. Regular common tests may overestimate exposure to mercury amalgam fillings. As dentists we are involved with the use of mercury in dental amalgam fillings but mercury has wide uses in other spheres of life for example thermometers, energy-saving light bulbs and uses in the mining, cement and coal-fired power sectors".

Tariq Drabu continued "We work with mercury in a highly controlled and structured manner within rigorous safety guidelines. This study demonstrates that mercury isotopes can be used to more accurately assess human exposure to the metaland the related health risksthan traditional measurements of mercury concentrations in hair and urine samples. Specifically, isotopes provide a novel chemical tracer that can be used to "fingerprint" both organic mercury from fish and inorganic mercury vapour from dental amalgams.

Tariq Drabu went on to say this study comes just a couple of months after the Minamata Convention the mercury treaty that will be adopted later this year in Japan. It is named in memory of the victims of mercury poisoning from industrial pollution that occurred when residents of the Minamata Bay ingested contaminated fish and shellfish in the 1950s. The treaty will require nations to phase down the use of mercury containing dental amalgam fillings over an appropriate time period relevant to each countrys national requirements. There was a widespread worry amongst the dental profession in the UK that the treaty would call for the total withdrawal of dental amalgam fillings over a short timeframe. In the end lobbying from various organisations including the British Dental Association proved to be persuasive against this approach. It was argued that more time was needed for oral health prevention programmes to be implemented and produce effects, and also time was needed for suitable alternative dental filling materials to be developed.

Commenting on the dental position in the UK Tariq Drabu said Within our current National Health Service structure dental amalgam is and continues to be the most cost effective material to use for our patients. This applies to many other countries in the world where the cost of alternative filling materials that are not mercury based is prohibitively expensive and cannot be justified. Pulling the plug on dental amalgam in an abrupt and dogmatic way would be very destabilising for patient care and I am glad that the UN Treaty does not seek to do this. They have taken a very pragmatic and sensible view. A steady move away from dental amalgam fillings is dependent on good, cost effective, evidence based materials being brought forward.

Concluding his thoughts Tariq Drabu said As dentists we always seek to put the health, safety and well-being of patients above all else. We also have to look at our own health and well being. We use dental amalgam under strict conditions of safety and support the progressive phase down over an agreed time frame. Regular and accurate monitoring is important and it is vital that this monitoring is a true reflection of the concentrations of mercury within the body rather than just assuming that it is all derived from dental amalgam fillings. Dental amalgam is a cost effective and proven material and until viable cost effective alternatives are developed it will remain the material of choice within our health care systems.

Delray Beach Senior Living Community Becomes Exclusive FAU Research Study Site

Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) June 13, 2013

Abbey Delray South has become the first senior living community to participate in on-site research studies with Florida Atlantic University (FAU). Faculty and PhD candidates from FAUs College of Nursing are conducting the exploratory studies on a variety of health and wellness initiatives. Abbey Delray South residents are excited about the opportunity to take an active role in helping advance the understanding and treatment of various conditions to allow older adults to lead healthier lives.

This is a great new opportunity for our community, and were happy to provide or participate in anything that promotes healthy aging, says David Randazzo, executive director at Abbey Delray South. These studies have the potential to be real game changers.

Residents love to be involved in different activities, and when I asked people here about participating in these studies, a lot of hands went up, says Abbey Delray South resident, Dr. Elizabeth Force, who has a PhD in Epidemiology and initiated the research partnership with FAU.

Its really special and unique to have a senior living community open their doors to us for these studies, says Dr. Lenny Chiang-Hanisko, associate professor at FAUs College of Nursing, who is conducting one of the research studies. We spend quite a bit of time at Abbey Delray South interacting with residents, which is extremely helpful to advance the studies and, ultimately, discover better ways to promote healthy aging.

The first study, conducted by Dr. Chiang-Hanisko and currently underway at the retirement community, is on polypharmacy and pain management across different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

An upcoming study at Abbey Delray South will be on the relationship between sleep disturbances and risk of falls. In particular, it will examine sleep hygiene the behavioral habits and environmental factors that precede sleep and may interfere with sleep.

The university will share its research findings with us, and it will allow us to learn how we can provide an even better level of service to our residents, Randazzo says. Senior living communities are always looking for ways to show how innovative and advanced they are with healthy aging initiatives, and I think partnerships like this with universities is something more will explore and try to establish.

Dr. Madan and His Colleagues Caution Patients on Weight Loss Research Such as JAMA Insurance Study

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) April 08, 2013

A new study posted in the highly regarded Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) on February 2013, Titled "Bariatric Surgery Not Associated With Reduced Overall Health Care Costs", seems to show no health cost savings after weight loss surgery. Study results seemed to indicate that weight loss surgery, such as Lap-Band Surgery, patients spent the same amount on health issues after surgery as before. However, as reported in Florida Today on Apr 3, 2013 (Titled: Brevard doctors dispute bariatric surgery study; Report targets price tag, patient quality of life), some doctors dispute the numbers, saying that the study did not include adequate long-term factors, and depended on outdated information. Bariatric surgeon Dr. Madan cautions patients to properly research methods of weight loss before scheduling an operation, such as gastric bypass or lap band surgery, to see if it is right for them.

Per the Florida Today article, Dr. Madan does agree with comments made by bariatric surgeon Dr. Nathan Allison. It tends to take anywhere from 18 to 24 months to see the best results from lap band surgery especially, because unlike gastric bypass, gastric banding merely restricts access to food. Gastric bypass can permanently change how the internal organs process food, which can speed up weight loss in the first few years, but there have been studies showing that years down the road of weight loss, changes made via gastric bypass may not continue to be so positive.

Cost savings can be real, especially in the area of diabetic and cardiovascular medication, but it may take some years before the savings add up to the cost of surgery. The real savings, says Dr. Madan in agreement with Dr. Allison, comes through in the quality of life. One classic example is a Pennsylvania resident, whose post-surgery loss of nearly 200 pounds and multiple medications was reported in the York Dispatch on March 25, 2013 (Weight loss surgery leaves Dover Twp. man satisfied with less). The patient, Ron Dale, also said that he noticed a great difference in social interaction after losing weight. He said that rumors of a 'social stigma' attached to weight were absolutely true, and that he was listened to and respected much more as a thinner person.

Though the JAMA study seemed to say that the only real value of bariatric surgery seemed to be the improved health and well-being of persons undergoing the procedure rather than on cost savings, but there do seem to be issues with the study. Although the researchers claim to have reviewed 30,000 patient expenses over a six-year period (2002 to 2008), Dr. Allison says that only 10% of the patient data included a two-year span of data. In other words, not all of the patients were tracked consistently over that six-year period.

Dr. Mark Fusco of Florida agreed, stating there was a very high fallout rate within the patient data. Further, the study only documented claims made by Blue Cross Blue Shield patients, who may not have claimed non-insurance obesity costs, such as weight loss programs and over-the-counter medications. However, study results did show a marked reduction in pharmacy and physician office costs, and a significantly lower cost for laparoscopic methods (lap band and bypass) than for traditional gastric bypass surgery. What may have further skewed the numbers was that the old, full-on surgical method of gastric bypass (a much more expensive procedure) was out of favor by 2005, halfway through study data that ended in 2008. Currently, laparoscopic methods are advised much more, as indicated in a cohort study posted in Medscape, due to lower complication rates, shorter length of stay, lower financial cost, and lower mortality.

Many studies are made about weight loss medication and procedures, says Dr. Madan, and that's why he cautions patients to really do 'apples-to-apples' research before engaging in a life-changing operation. Although lap band surgery is one of the least invasive, and least time-consuming, it's true that life after surgery must be much different than pre-surgery. A low-calorie, higher protein diet plus regular exercise works just as well pre-surgery as post-surgery, and is required by many physicians. These lifestyle changes ensure that people get the most out of the procedure, instead of becoming discouraged by weight regain and having to spend more money on additional procedures, such as slipped band issues or follow-up inpatient procedures.

Dr. Madan has written 175 articles, and was the first in Memphis to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass. To date, he has performed over, and was first to offer an incision-less treatment for post-operative weight gain. As the former Chief of Laparoendoscopic and Bariatric Surgery Division at the University of Miami, Dr. Atul Madan may well be considered an expert in his field. Dr. Madan won the 2007 SAGES Young Investigator Award, was honored by the American Medical Association Physican's Recognition Award, among others. Dr. Madan's patient reviews are consistently high, and he received the 2011 and 2012 Patients' Choice Award.

New Study Results Suggest that Grape Seed Extract, Like that Found in Weight Loss Supplement Prescopodene, May Help Fight Kidney Disease

Australia (PRWEB) April 12, 2013

Eat too much fat and you risk doing some damage to your internal organs because they cannot function as efficiently as they should. However, new research findings suggest that grape seed extract, like that found in the weight loss supplement Prescopodene, may actually help prevent kidney disease or, as an alternative, could be used as a treatment option.

On February 28, 2013, a study was published by Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism citing research conducted on Tunisian rats. The rats were put on diets that were extremely high in fat, causing an increase in triglycerides (TG) that helped lead them to sustain kidney damage.

Then, they were given the human equivalent of 35 grams of grape seed and skin extract (GSSE) along with the fatty diet to see if their bodies responded differently to the fat they consumed. What they found was that there was a partial reversal of the TG deposition as well as the histological damage.

This means that not only did their bodies deal more effectively with the fat, but it also undid some of the damage. Its hopeful then that these same effects would be found in humans that suffer from kidney disease due to diets which are extremely high in fat.

Prescopodene is a combination of several natural ingredients, including grape seed extract, that are known to raise metabolism. Others include green tea and ginger root. It also contains vitamin B6, vitamin C and magnesium which have all been previously labeled as essential to the weight loss process.

A New Study Shows Eating Lunch Early Can Let You Lose Weight

Sydney, Australia (PRWEB) April 23, 2013

In a recent report by Psychcentral.com, it was written that research has been completed involving the link between physical activity and obesity. The newest part of the study has confirmed that when an individual has become obese, they will have a reduced amount of physical activity.

It would seem only natural to come to this conclusion, but there was no concrete evidence that these two factors were actually linked. Professor Larry Tucker, Ph.D. studied the other end of the spectrum to see if being obese really lead to a decrease in activity.

Most people talk about it as if its a cycle, said Tucker, senior author on a study appearing online ahead of print in the journal Obesity.

Half of the cycle has been studied almost without limit. This is the first study of its kind, in many ways, looking at obesity leading to decreases in physical activity over time.

During the research, over 250 participants had an accelerometer attached to them to measure the actual movement and intensity of their activity.

Roughly 35 percent of the population reports that theyre regularly active, Tucker said.

When you actually put an accelerometer on adults and follow them for many days, only about 5 to 7 percent are actually regularly active. We used an objective measure so we could determine genuine movement, not just wishful thinking.

On average, it was found that among those tested, physical activity had dropped over the course of 20 months.

With all the exercise that can be done to help these obese individuals and others with weight problems lose weight, there are other solutions. Using diet supplements can be a big factor in how much people lose when coupled with diet and exercise. One example of a supplement that works well is the diet pill, Liproxenol. Within the last few months, Liproxenol was recently named to The Diet Pill Review's list of the Best Diet Pills of 2012.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy Responds to New Study Revealing Behaviour of Patients Who Have Suffered a Stroke or Heart Disease

(PRWEB UK) 25 April 2013

According to The Spec, more than 14 percent of patients fail to adopt any healthy habits after suffering a stroke or with heart disease. Many other patients do not adopt enough of a healthier lifestyle in order to avoid reoccurring illnesses and disease. The study looked at three main health lifestyle choices, avoiding or quitting smoking, consuming a healthy diet and taking regular physical exercise. The findings were made from 154,000 adults across 178 countries with varying incomes over a seven year period. Only 4 percent adopted all three healthy lifestyle choices.

It seems that changing old habits such as stopping smoking, taking regular exercise and adopting a healthy diet are requirements that are difficult to do. Hypnotherapy can be used as a complementary approach to breaking bad habits such as smoking and overeating.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy is one of the most established hypnotherapy directories in the UK, listing qualified and experienced hypnotherapists throughout the British Isles that can help clients with a range of issues including smoking, weight loss and anxiety. It is possible to use a hypnotist to help make major lifestyle choices such as quitting smoking or changing eating habits forever as a representative explained, The desire to quit needs to be present in order for hypnotherapy to work alongside it and in turn strengthen and reinforce the determination to quit smoking or change eating habits forever.

The NCH continues to follow health related news.

NCH represents over 1800 hypnotherapy professionals within the UK and is committed to ensuring the highest possible professional standards amongst our members. Those looking for help with smoking, weight, anxiety, panic attacks, habits and phobias may be helped by local NCH accredited therapists, look for the NCH seal of approval on their websites. DietAssist responds to study linking workouts and food on menus

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 27 April 2013

The study of 300 volunteers showed that menus displaying the amount of exercise needed to burn off the calories in meals helped people consume fewer calories.

The volunteers were split into three groups. The first group had a menu without any calorie information, the second group had menus with calories displayed.

The third group had menus that showed the number of calories plus the amount of brisk walking required to burn them off.

All of the menus offered the same choice of food and drink, which included burgers, sandwiches, salad, chips, soft drinks and water.

None of the volunteers was aware of the reason for the study and the researchers took into account hunger levels when interpreting their findings.

On average, the group given the exercise equivalent consumed 100 fewer calories than the other groups.

The study highlights the importance of the human mind in losing weight," says Rob Woodgate, co-creator of DietAssist. "The study confirms that people are able to make better choices when the consequences are made crystal clear. A calorie number means nothing to most people, but faced with the prospect of a defined amount of exercise, the choice becomes easier to make.

At DietAssist, we teach people the psychology of dieting and tricks to help them work with their mind. In short, we teach them how to lose weight more easily and keep it off.

The DietAssist programme is the result of over 20 years experience of helping people to lose weight effectively, and uses the latest psychological techniques to avoid the self sabotage and demotivation that dieters commonly experience.

The DietAssist programme helps dieters strengthen their motivation and resolve, and creates the optimum psychological state for success. It is designed to work alongside any weight loss programme or sensible eating plan.

DietAssist responds to recent study that shows women are shamed into dieting

(PRWEB UK) 29 April 2013

The study, reported in the Mail Online on Monday, states that slender celebrities cavorting on the beach in bikinis make women feel insecure about their bodies.

The poll of 2,000 men and women, by supermarket Asda, found that women want to lose on average 11lb and as many as 82% intend to slim down by summer, and one in four are motivated to lose weight by bikini pictures.

However, the same percentages do not hold true for men as less than one in five men said they hope to lose weight by summer. Of men who do want to lose weight, nearly two-thirds said they wouldn't be changing their habits until a month before their holiday.

This week is when women are most likely to start their summer bikini diet, according to the study.

More than a quarter of women polled said seeing celebrity bodies gave them the incentive to diet and 15 per cent even admitted to decorating their fridge with celeb thinspiration pictures.

Meanwhile, those in their twenties confessed to crash dieting and using fad weight loss plans in a last minute bid to shape up.

DietAssist understand that motivation is the most important factor in losing weight successfully. There are some key motivating factors that are more successful than others. For example, recently separated men or women tend to be far more successful than someone who wants to lose weight for an existing partner. Obviously the need to get back into shape is a strong motivator so they can be successful on the relationship market.

In essence, self-image is a far greater motivator than general health or a partners feelings.

Paul Howard, from DietAssist, said Because we know that motivation is paramount to the successful dieter, we focus a large part of the DietAssist programme on keeping the motivation up. We are always being asked how to lose weight? and in a nutshell the answer is stay motivated. If the motivation stays high so does the amount of weight loss.

Give them one of the best gifts they will ever receive.

The DietAssist programme is the result of over 20 years experience of helping people to lose weight effectively, and uses the latest psychological techniques to avoid the self sabotage and demotivation that dieters commonly experience.
