Texas Masonry Council: Joplin Tornado Offers Lessons for Texas Cities; New Hospital to have Masonry Exterior for Safety and Appearance

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) April 08, 2013

As spring weather ushers in tornado season in Texas, Missouri health care executive John Farnen has two words of advice: harden exteriors.

Farnen speaks from experience. On May 22, 2011, one of the most powerful tornadoes ever recorded ripped through Joplin, MO, killing 162 people, including one visitor and five critical-care patients at St. Johns Regional Medical Center. The hospitals structural skeleton remained standing after the storm but the rest of it was ripped to shreds. The facility was a total loss.

As executive director of strategic projects for Mercy Health Systems, owner of the hospital and the sixth largest Catholic health system in America, Farnen has the job of analyzing the catastrophe and applying the lessons learned to the construction of the new $ 350-million replacement hospital, renamed Mercy Hospital Joplin.

During the tornado, the buildings exterior covering and windows failed to withstand the wind and debris of the tornado. The hospitals exterior at that time was mostly glass, some metal panels, with precast concrete on the main hospital with some exterior insulation finishing system (EIFS), a lightweight synthetic cladding meant to look like stucco. There was also EIFS on the adjacent office buildings. EIFS was popular in Texas until problems with black mold started showing up.

When you walked around the areas of the hospital that used EIFS, you could see glass shards stuck in it and pieces of two-by-fours that had penetrated it, Farnen said. Some debris can go right through it.

Lesson Learned: Harden the Buildings Exterior Covering. The new facility will not be covered with EIFS in any of the patient care areas, Farnen said. Building exteriors in those areas will either be reinforced concrete, stone and brick, or precast concrete. The entire exterior skin will be made of a harder material, which will prevent the kind of exterior damage we saw at the old hospital and help prevent the kind of serious interior damage that led to chaos and injuries.

Farnen said the first and second floors of the new 900,000-square-foot, nine-story structure will have exteriors of hand-laid brick. Above those levels the exterior will be precast concrete with brick veneer. He said they would have used hand-laid brick for the upper levels, too, but had to use precast concrete in order to meet the projects compressed timetable. Its now scheduled to open in early 2015.

Brick and stone is just a lot better look, he said. Not only does it hold up better in severe weather, but you just cant beat the look of brick and stone. So, you get a great look and better protection.

Another lesson learned was to harden and protect back up power sources, and masonry plays a key role in that, too.

Losing power created a lot of problems for us, Farnen said. When the tornado hit, the transformers that provide normal power to the facility were lost almost immediately So, there was no power of any kind inside the hospital, not even for critical-care areas.

The new facility will have a separate central utility plant that will be housed in a hardened structure with storm doors. That structure will be partially buried, and mainly built with reinforced masonry block and brick.

Farnen also noted that the hardened exterior was no budget buster. It added only 2-3 percent to the construction cost. Going forward, he added, Mercy will apply the lessons learned in Joplin to all the new facilities it builds in its four-state service area. Indeed, near the new Mercy Hospital Joplin, the health system plans to break ground next year for a separate behavioral health hospital and a rehabilitation hospital, and these also will have the same tornado-resistant features, he said.

Rudy Garza, executive vice president of the Texas Masonry Council, said a growing number of Texas communities would agree with the Missouri health care executive. More than 170 Texas cities have adopted minimum requirements for masonry on the exteriors of new construction. A new interactive map at http://www.masonryordinance.com shows the locations of many of these cities.

The Joplin tornado was a historic natural disaster, and every city should look closely at the lessons learned in that event, Garza said. The hospitals experience is an important example and has implications for residential, as well as commercial structures.

He added that, Often, Texas municipal leaders cite appearance, community image, sustainability, and safety as the main reasons for requiring masonry as the primary exterior material.

One such community is the fast-growing city of Frisco, north of Dallas. Frisco Mayor Maher Maso, an information technology entrepreneur, says Frisco always has excelled at long-term planning and policies that support sustainability. That mindset led officials to consider and ultimately adopt masonry planning.

In focusing on sustainability, Frisco officials saw it as a proverbial three-legged stool with legs of safety, durability, and aesthetics. The Frisco Fire Department, which is ISO 1 certified, emphasized the safety benefits of masonry construction. Officials also were swayed by the durability, low-maintenance, and aesthetic characteristics of masonry.

Frisco planners and elected officials recognized that many new buildings look good for a while, but the real test is how they will look in 10, 20, or 30 years.

As neighborhoods age, Maso said, whats the best material to withstand the test of time? What requires the least maintenance? All the signs pointed to masonry Just about everything weve built has had sustainability in mind.

Garza said, Texas has a rich history of building with long-lasting masonry products. Masonry is part of the Texas heritage, and by embracing masonry planning, local officials and civic leaders, such as those in Frisco, are helping to build a strong legacy for their communities.

Research has shown that masonry (brick, stone, concrete block) provides greater protection against fire, and windstorms, such as tornadoes and hurricanes, than non-masonry siding products.

I

In addition, other research has shown that masonry requirements result in: 1) higher overall property values; 2) growth in the tax base, lessening the tax burden on residents; 3) continued population and housing growth, and 4) no significant impact on affordability for either renters or buyers of housing.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy Responds to New Study Revealing Behaviour of Patients Who Have Suffered a Stroke or Heart Disease

(PRWEB UK) 25 April 2013

According to The Spec, more than 14 percent of patients fail to adopt any healthy habits after suffering a stroke or with heart disease. Many other patients do not adopt enough of a healthier lifestyle in order to avoid reoccurring illnesses and disease. The study looked at three main health lifestyle choices, avoiding or quitting smoking, consuming a healthy diet and taking regular physical exercise. The findings were made from 154,000 adults across 178 countries with varying incomes over a seven year period. Only 4 percent adopted all three healthy lifestyle choices.

It seems that changing old habits such as stopping smoking, taking regular exercise and adopting a healthy diet are requirements that are difficult to do. Hypnotherapy can be used as a complementary approach to breaking bad habits such as smoking and overeating.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy is one of the most established hypnotherapy directories in the UK, listing qualified and experienced hypnotherapists throughout the British Isles that can help clients with a range of issues including smoking, weight loss and anxiety. It is possible to use a hypnotist to help make major lifestyle choices such as quitting smoking or changing eating habits forever as a representative explained, The desire to quit needs to be present in order for hypnotherapy to work alongside it and in turn strengthen and reinforce the determination to quit smoking or change eating habits forever.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy Responds to new Study detailing how long Consumers Spent Exercising and Making Healthy Meals

(PRWEB UK) 13 May 2013

According to a new study, most people will either exercise or make healthy meals, but not both over the same period of time. The study which looked at over 112,000 American adults investigated how much time people spent exercising and preparing healthy meals and noted that only 16 percent of men and 12 percent of women had completed physical exercise as well as dieting. On average, when compared to non dieters, men took roughly 19 minutes of exercise and women around 9 minutes. In addition, the study looked at the time both sexes took to prepare meals men approximately 17 minutes and women on average 44 minutes, more than double that of men. The study concluded that those who spent more time on either area exercise or food preparation the less they spent on the other, suggesting that consumers are only prepared to spend a certain amount of time on healthy activities.

As obesity continues to be a problem in the UK it is important to investigate the way people feel about healthy activities and find routes to encourage people to stay fit. Alongside this, it is also worth noting complementary therapies that can help weight loss such as hypnotherapy.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy is a hypnotherapist directory that gives details of hypnotherapists based throughout the United Kingdom making it easy for consumers to book hypnotherapy sessions to help with a range of problems including weight, habits, phobias and anxiety. To date, the Councils hypnotist members have helped thousands of people lose weight as a representative explained, Hypnotherapy can aid weight loss by using two main methods, the first is using a hypnoband similar to that of a gastric band which mentally shrinks the stomach or the second, which comprises of various tactics to help change eating habits and attitudes to food.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy Responds to new Research about Weight Loss

(PRWEB UK) 14 May 2013

According to Zee News, a new study has shown that green tea extract in tandem with an additional compound could be effective for body weight control and type 2 diabetes. The study found the active constituents of green tea, which have been shown to inhibit glucose and liquid uptake, could help with weight loss and to control glucose uptake for diabetes sufferers. Results showed that when green tea extract was given with polyethylene glycol to both diabetic and non diabetic mice, there was a huge reduction in body mass and weight, insulin resistance and glucose intolerance.

Such findings demonstrate the potential effectiveness of green tea on humans especially if they are following a healthy lifestyle and diet. The results are something that medical advisors and general practitioners have been recommending for thousands of years dating back to traditional Chinese medicine.

In the UK alone obesity has become a problem of epidemic proportion and whilst the National Health Service and Government are doing their upmost to try and reduce the problem, some are still struggling to lose weight and keep in shape. A complementary approach that has helped hundreds lose weight and keep healthy is through the use of hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapists work to change the eating habits of the client and to help them to lose weight by realigning the way they approach food. Combining a healthy lifestyle including drinking green tea and attending hypnotherapy sessions could help clients lose weight.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy has been making it possible for consumers to contact hypnotherapists throughout Great Britain offering a hypnotherapist directory for those looking to book sessions in their local area on a range of topics including stopping smoking, controlling panic attacks and losing weight.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy expects to see more clients looking to control their weight as the year progresses.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy Responds to Statistics Showing Weight Loss is More Effective if Carried out Through Weight Loss Support Groups

(PRWEB UK) 20 May 2013

According to The Telegraph, slimmers who attempt to lose weight alone rather than joining a slimming group lose less weight. The American study showed that those who joined a slimming group lost five times more weight than those who did not. The study looked at dieters at two intervals three and six months and found that in both cases the slimmers had lost more weight if they had joined a slimming organisation. As part of the study, 147 people joined a sliming group and 145 dieted alone.

Lead researcher added, The difference in weight loss between the two groups is compelling. Whilst people in the Weight Watchers group demonstrated significant weight loss at six months, people in the self help group started to re gain weight. Over time, it is unlikely that DIY diets are successful.

As obesity becomes a growing problem in the UK many are looking for alternative ways to lose weight either by joining weight loss groups or by using complementary therapies such as hypnotherapy.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy is one of the UKs most established hypnotherapist directories offering members of the public the opportunity to find hypnotherapists in their local area and seek help for various issues including stopping smoking, dealing with anxiety or panic attacks and of course, weight loss.

To date qualified and professional members of the council have helped hundreds of thousands of people with problems as a representative explained, Weight loss can be difficult to continue alone and with no boost of determination or empathy like you would receive from other slimming members in a group. Hypnotherapy can help boost this if you plan to go it alone or add to the chance of even more weight loss if you are already a member of a weight loss group.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy Responds to New Study Detailing the Effect of Pre-packaged Diet Foods

(PRWEB UK) 23 May 2013

According to Reuters UK, in a head to head comparison with those who ate a traditional diet, people who ate a diet of portion controlled pre packaged foods lost almost twice as much weight as those who only used advice on how to reduce calories. The study concluded that the more freedom a dieter has with their portion size and the food they eat the less of a chance they have of losing weight. Those who ate focused and bespoke diet meals have more of a chance of losing weight.

A leading nutrition expert added, When theres less structure, then participants are making more decisions, and I think too often theyre making decisions that undermine their goal to stick to a calorie target.

Results showed that those who stuck to the prepared meals lost on average 16.5 pounds and the regular dieters who prepared their own food lost 8.4 pounds on average.

Whilst some who are overweight are doing their best to lose weight through traditional methods such as dieting and changing what they eat, others are trying complementary methods such as hypnotherapy.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy is an online hypnotherapist directory giving consumers access to local hypnotherapist in their area throughout the UK. The councils members are professional and qualified and have helped hundreds of thousands of people with varying issues including habits, phobias, anxiety and weight loss as a representative explained, Losing weight can be a long, hard process and whilst methods used in the study mentioned can be helpful for some, using a fresh, unique approach and changing eating habits from within the brain can be more effective for some.
