Great HealthWorks, Inc., Makers of Omega XL, Reports University of Kansas Medical Center Study: Omega-3s Support Healthier Pregnancies and Birth Weight

(PRWEB) May 13, 2013

Due to widespread dietary deficiencies of essential omega-3 fatty acids, doctors typically recommend that pregnant women add an Omega-3 supplement to their pre and postnatal care regimen. Recent research, conducted at the University of Kansas Medical Center and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggests supplementing pregnant mothers with omega-3 fatty acid, such as found in Omega XL, can lead to longer gestations and healthier birth weights.

The Kansans City researchers designed a double-blind, randomized placebo controlled trial - long considered the gold standard in clinical research that looked at a group of 350 pregnant women, from the 20th week of gestation to birth, who were given either 600 mg of omega-3 DHA daily, or a placebo. Blood was analyzed for red blood cell phospholipid DHA upon enrolment in the study and at birth, from both mom as well as from the umbilical cord.

The blood samples from the group supplemented with DHA, compared to the placebo group, registered higher levels of phospholipid DHA both maternally and at the umbilical cord. An analysis of the pregnancies showed that the DHA group experienced longer gestation duration, greater birth weight and infant size (measured in length and head circumference) than the placebo group. In addition, the DHA group experienced fewer births before 34 weeks, and shorter hospital stays for infants born preterm than did the placebo group.

This study demonstrated that 600mg per day of Omega-3 fatty acid DHA was safe and helped to promote healthy fetal development, overall pregnancy wellness and a reduction in preterm births. The researchers stated as to the significance of the findings: a reduction in early preterm and very-low birth weight could be important clinical and public health outcomes of DHA supplementation.

These findings come on the heels of prior prenatal and pediatric research which suggests that omega-3 supplementation promotes neurological and intellectual development, supports the brain and eyes, increases cognitive function, and enhances visual learning and memory in infants and young children.

Omega XL is one of only two Omega 3 supplements sold in the world that contains the patented stabilized marine lipid extract PCSO-524 derived only from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel, with 30 healthy fatty acids including DHA and EPA. Sold in other parts of the world under its sister brand name Lyprinol, Omega XL is manufactured exclusively by Great HealthWorks Inc., and is the most widely available omega-3 fish oil supplement containing the potent PCSO-524 marine lipid extract. J.R. Martinez Delivers Keynote Address to West Coast University Graduates

Irvine, CA (PRWEB) May 26, 2013

J.R. Martinez, Iraq War Veteran, Purple Heart recipient, and 2011 Winner of Dancing with the Stars, delivered the keynote address at the 2013 Commencement Ceremony of West Coast University.

In March of 2003, J.R. was deployed to Iraq, and on April 5, less than a month into his deployment, he was driving a Humvee in Karbala when his left front tire hit a roadside bomb. The three other soldiers were ejected from the burning vehicle, but he was trapped inside and suffered smoke inhalation and severe burns to 34 percent of his body.

J.R. spent 34 months in recovery surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio, Texas, and underwent 33 different surgeries including skin grafts and cosmetic surgery. During recovery, a nurse asked him to speak to a burn patient, who had just seen his body for the first time and had become withdrawn. After a 45-minute visit, the patient opened the curtain letting light in his room and his heart. J.R. then understood the impact he had on this patient and decided to use his experience to help others. He continued to visit patients sharing his story and listening to theirs. While J.R.'s experience was certainly life-changing, amazingly, he claims this is actually a change for the better. I discovered it is what is inside a person that matters most and I wouldnt change anythingabsolutely anything!" states J.R. "I do believe everything happens for a reason, and I'm extremely grateful for that day because it led me into this life!"

Mr. Martinez has become a highly sought after motivational speaker and he travels the country spreading his message of resilience and optimism. He devotes himself to showing others the true value of making the most of every situation. His commencement address to more than 650 graduating nurses, dental hygienists, and health care management scholars focused on the medical care he received during his grueling recovery, and the impact his nurse had on his specific efforts of rehabilitation. We were honored to have Mr. Martinez join us for commencement, and to share his truly inspirational story. It was powerful for our graduates to hear, first-hand, the impact they will have on lives of so many throughout their careers, stated Dr. Barry Ryan, President of West Coast University.

Massachusetts Beekeepers Association 2013 Field Day, University of Massachusetts Agronomy Farm, South Deerfield, Massachusetts, June 22, 2013

South Deerfield, MA (PRWEB) June 10, 2013

The Massachusetts Beekeepers Association 2013 Field Day will take place Saturday, June 22, 2013 from 9:30 to 3:30 p.m. at The University of Massachusetts Agronomy Farm, River Rd. South Deerfield, Massachusetts. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. and is free to all beekeepers; this is a rain or shine event.

The University of Massachusetts Agronomy Farm is a beautiful location and the site of many agricultural experiments. Special thanks to Stephen Herbert PhD for arranging the use of this historic research facility.

Field Day is an opportunity to learn from experienced beekeepers the practical tasks of hive management. Expert beekeepers volunteer their time to share techniques on pest & disease management, Queen rearing, swarm prevention, and a variety of practical skills. It is an opportunity to learn and ask questions from some of the best state and New England beekeepers.

Most Massachusetts counties have beekeeping organizations and I encourage anybody in Massachusetts who has an interest in beekeeping to join a local beekeepers association and attend this event, said Mary Ross of the Mohawk Valley Trading Company where they specialize in raw varietal honey. Varietal honey is made primarily from the nectar of a particular type of blossom or flower. To capture the unique character and flavor of the blossom or flower, beekeepers must study botanical bloom and flowering patterns when planning hive placement.

Lunch will be catered by Bubs BBQ of Sunderland for $ 10.00 per person and it includes pulled pork sandwich, beans, cole slaw or potato salad, corn bread and bottled water. Lunch reservations must be reserved in advance by Saturday, June 16. Plan to bring a lunch if not ordering BBQ. If possible bring a chair.

Program: Demonstrations will focus on practical techniques for new and experienced beekeepers. Sessions will be approximately one hour in length, using live bees. Most will be scheduled twice during the day. Based on past Field Day experience, it is now an MBA rule that all attendees must wear a veil; presenters as well as observers. All those attendees not complying do so at their own risk, and the MBA and Franklin County Bee Association are not to be held liable for injuries incurred.

Presenters & Topics: Schedule will be listed in the "Field Day Program" available at the registration table. Additional topics may be added on day of the event.

About Honey Bees

Bees are insects that are related to wasps and ants and there are approximately 20,000 known species of bees found on every continent except Antarctica. Honeybees (Apis mellifera) are not native to the United States as they were introduced by Europeans to produce honey and beeswax. Honeybees are responsible for pollinating 80% of flowering crops, and without them the worlds food supply would be dramatically reduced.

As people become more conscious of the important role that honeybees play in their daily lives, beekeeping is becoming more mainstream and is now allowed in many urban and suburban municipalities. Since 2006, beekeepers in the North America and Europe have noticed a mystifying occurrence called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) in which worker bees from a beehive or European honey bee colony abruptly disappear, leaving the queen and insect larvae behind, unable to fend for themselves. While such disappearances have occurred throughout the history of apiculture, the term colony collapse disorder was first applied to a drastic rise in the number of disappearances of Western honey bee colonies in North America in late 2006.

In 2013, a formal review by the European Food Safety Authority stated that recent studies show that neonicotinoid pesticides, some of the most widely used pesticides in the world, pose an unacceptably high risk to bees, and that the industry-sponsored science upon which regulatory agencies' claims of safety have relied is flawed and possibly deliberately deceptive.

Honey has been used by humans since ancient times for its health benefits and as a sweetener and flavoring for many foods and beverages, with tea being the most popular. Next to maple syrup, it is the most commonly used natural sweetener in North America.

Honey bees make honey by collecting nectar from flowers and regurgitating it into beeswax honeycombs inside their hive. Beeswax is a natural wax produced in the hive of honey bees of the genus Apis and its most popular uses are beeswax candles and as an ingredient in natural skin care products.

The flavor and color of honey is determined by the type of flower the bees gather the nectar from; therefore, when cooking or baking with honey it is a good idea to taste the honey before using it in a recipe. For example: a dark honey like tulip poplar-black locust honey will result in a strong, heavy, pungent flavor, whereas orange blossom honey will result in a delicate orange flavor. Dark-colored honey is considered to be higher in minerals and antioxidants than light-colored honey, and one of the most well-known dark-colored honeys is buckwheat honey. Raw buckwheat honey contains a higher amount of minerals and an antioxidant called polyphenol, which gives it its dark color. The health benefits of buckwheat honey are many and well known.

The rawest honey available is comb honey which is made of sections of the hexagonal-shaped beeswax cells of the honeycomb that contain raw honey that have been cut from the wooden frames of a beehive.

Using raw honey is a long-term investment strategy for optimal health and personal care; the dividends are overall mental, physical and spiritual well-being. Like a blue chip stock, raw honey should be included in any health-conscious consumers immune system boosting portfolio and the return on investment of substituting honey for refined sugar in the human diet is incalculable.

Another product made by honey bees and used by humans is bee propolis; a resinous substance that honey bees collect from tree buds and bark or other botanical sources and mix with beeswax, nectar and pollen. This mixture is used by bees to seal gaps in the hive and by humans for its health benefits and as a traditional, natural or homeopathic medicine.

The Mohawk Valley Trading Company offers the highest quality unprocessed natural products they can produce namely; maple syrup, honey, handmade natural soap, personal care products and beeswax candles. In addition, they offer natural stone, tea and spices from around the world.

University Finds that Lifting Weights May Lower Blood Sugar Levels, Suggesting that Supplements Like Prescopodene May Assist By Creating More Energetic Exercise Sessions

Australia (PRWEB) May 08, 2013

It has been a well-known fact that lifting weights builds muscles and strengthens bones. However, new research indicates that it also lowers blood glucose levels, meaning that all-natural weight loss supplements like Prescopodene may help keep blood sugar manageable by keeping a person energized through their regular exercise routines.

In an article published on April 7, 2013 by the University of Michigans News Service, they point to findings by Jiandie Lin, Associate Professor at the University of Michigans Medical School as changing the way that people have long thought about white muscles and the negative effect they have on diabetes.

The human body has several different types of muscles. Some are red, some are white and there are ones in between. People who engage in endurance-type activities, such as running, have more red muscles, whereas those who engage in more weight bearing exercises, like weight lifting, have more white ones.

To figure out if white muscle is harmful for diabetics, as it has long been believed, they searched for a protein that aids in the creation of white muscle. They found one called BAF60c. Then they used mice to see how it affected their endurance levels, and thus their ability to generate white muscle as they wanted to see if it impacted their blood sugar levels.

They found that the mice with the BAF606 protein ran less than mice that didnt have it. However, when they fed the protein-containing mice a high fat diet and they gained weight, they were more efficient at keeping their blood glucose levels stabilized than their non-protein counterparts.

This suggests that gaining muscle via strength training workouts may assist with blood sugar levels remaining more constant. Therefore, weight loss supplements like Prescopodene, which contain energy enhancing ingredients such as green tea and grape seed extract, may help give people the motivation to engage in the regular weight lifting routines they need for complete blood health.
