Dr. Jason Diamond reviews the latest results from The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently published list of the top five cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States and offers tips on how to choose a plastic surgeon.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number one cosmetic procedure in 2012 was breast augmentation with 286,000 surgeries, a number that declined 7% from the prior year. 246,000 patients underwent nose reshaping in 2012, unchanged from 2011. Eyelid surgery saw a modest increase of 4% from 2011, bringing the total number to 204,000. Approximately 202,000 people chose liposuction in 2012 (a 1% decline). 126,000 patients sought out a plastic surgeon for a facelift in 2012, an increase of 6%.
The statistics are consistent with the trends Dr. Jason Diamond sees in his busy Beverly Hills medical practice. Using the latest medical technology and research, says Dr. Diamond. plastic surgeons and skin care professionals are now able to offer a range of alternatives for patients looking to reduce lines and wrinkles and achieve younger looking skin.
Despite struggling growth numbers and unemployment above historic averages, Americans spent close to $ 11 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2012. Although $ 6.7 billion was spent on surgical procedures, alternative procedures remain very popular. Americans spent $ 2 billion on injectable procedures; $ 1.8 billion on skin rejuvenation procedures; and over $ 483 million was spent on other nonsurgical procedures, such as laser hair removal and laser treatment of varicose and spider veins.
