Dr. Francine Kaufman, inventor of Extend Nutrition, recalls the first insulin pump she used with her patients in the 1980s: It weighed several pounds and was jokingly referred to as the big blue brick. For the most part, it could only be used in the hospital setting.
The technology has advanced greatly in the 30 years since then, and the advantages are greater as well. The insulin pump is now a small mechanical device worn on the outside of the body, often on a belt or a pocket. It delivers fast-acting insulin in precise amounts at pre-programmed times.
It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people around the world use an insulin pump, many of whom are also using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). A CGM is a small sensor that is inserted under the skin to automatically check blood glucose levels.
Kaufman, a world-renowned endocrinologist and past president of the American Diabetes Association, shows in Insulin pumps and Continuous Glucose Monitoring how the new technology of insulin pumps and CGMs can be used to improve the lives of people with type 1 and type 2 Diabetes.
There are over 26 million children and adults in the United States diagnosed with diabetes.
These technologies although not really that much more complicated than your smartphone, computer, or DVD- do require basic understanding, training and follow-up adjustment if they are going to be helpful in improving diabetes outcomes, Kaufman writes.
The purpose of the book is to give you practical tips, including the knowledge and the skills to maximize insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring, if that is what you and your health care provider decide is best for you or your child. The goal is to enable you to make your journey through life with diabetes as successful as possible.
Kaufman has devoted her lifes work to doing just that. In addition to this newest book, she is the author of Diabesity and creator of Extend Nutrition snacks: The only snacks clinically proven to help control blood sugar for up to 9 hours.
The importance of a healthy diet and good blood sugar control was paramount on Kaufmans mind when she created Extend Nutrition snacks in the 1990s. Her goal was to help reduce nighttime hypoglycemia for children with diabetes.
She formulated Extend Nutrition snacks with a patented blend of lean protein, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats. The key ingredient is raw uncooked cornstarch, a very complex carbohydrate that digests and converts to blood sugar very slowly.
The snacks were originally used to help people with diabetes manage blood sugar. Today, because they help keep blood sugar stable longer than any other snack on the market, they are also used to help control appetite, reduce weight and sustain energy.
In her book, Kaufman points out the importance of diet, especially carbohydrates, and the use of insulin pumps and CGMs.
Carbohydrate is the main nutrient that affects your glucose levels, so you need to learn how to count carbohydrate. But you must also understand how the other macronutrients fat and protein interact with the carbohydrate, in order to customize your insulin use to your bodys individual needs, she writes. These are critical skills to have in your journey with diabetes.
Kaufman says the benefits of insulin pumps are many .The pumps reduce hypoglycemia, improve A1C levels, improve quality of life and reduce daily insulin dosages. CGM gives real-time glucose readings and, when combined with an insulin pump, allows for the management of glucose levels on the go.
Kaufman is grateful for the new advances in technology but believes the best is yet to come: Dr. Kaufman is leading the development of an artificial pancreas.
We have come a long way, and the reality of an artificial pancreas is in sight, she writes. The end result will be the near-perfect control of glucose levels without much human intervention.

Total revenues for all salon industry services (hair, skin, nails) plus salon retail grew at a robust 4.1% to $ 75.38 billion, according to the new 2012 Professional Salon Industry Haircare Study from Professional Consultants & Resources, the leading salon industry strategic consultants and data source. The total U.S. salon haircare market segment (services plus retail) registered $ 63.33 billion and grew at about 3.3%. There are nearly 288,300 salons and barbershops in the United States.
The professional beauty industry is strongly evolving," says Cyrus Bulsara, president. Mens salon/barber services and product sales showed nearly twice the growth of unisex salons. The nail category continued to grow strong at nearly four times salon market growth. Continuing the 2011 trends, haircolor, keratin/smoothing services and basic cutting and styling services were major growth-drivers. Clients and stylists continued to move from traditional independent salons and mid-tier chains to chair/suite rentals, family-economy chains and upscale men's barbershop chains. The continued growth of blow-dry bars added to total service growth.
Major study highlights, current style trends and high-growth areas indicate robust salon industry growth in the future:
Severely bald patients have been rejected for hair restoration surgeries up until now. Dr. Sanusi Umar, a leading innovator in advanced FUE with uGraft shows that even profound hair loss is treatable.
In February of this year, one of his patients, who was a Norwood 7 (the most advanced stage of baldness), reached his six month mark after his surgery where 10,500 grafts were used. The patient had asked for a conservative level of coverage, along with a high hairline. And with his remarkable new look, he no longer has to use a hairpiece. And, more improvements are expected from this point on. The patient's before and after video can be viewed here.
NEW POSSIBILITIES WITH BODY HAIR FOLLICLES FOR SEVERE BALDNESS
Many people find it ironic that a balding patient needs to have hair to get the hair. Conventional hair restoration procedures rely on harvesting follicles from the back and sides of the head. They are then inserted into carefully placed slits in the hair loss regions.
Because the immune system tends to attack proteins that are foreign to the body, these hair follicles must be ones own. They cannot be from another person.
Severely bald patients often have just a small margin of hair around the lower sides and back of their head. This does not offer enough grafts for adequate coverage. Therefore, these individuals have typically been denied candidacy for these procedures.
Through numerous successes on a variety of real patient cases, Dr. Umar has shown that hair follicles from other areas of the body can offer an abundant source of donor follicles to benefit the most severe cases of baldness. He has developed a proprietary treatment system called uGraft that allows him to make precise excisions to safely extract healthy, undamaged hair follicles. The resulting wounds are minuscule and heal very quickly. And the risk of scarring is extremely minimal, which is quite important when extracting grafts from highly visible body areas like the face.
In body hair transplant procedures, natural groupings of hair (follicular units) can be directly harvested from regions such as: nape of the neck, chest, legs, arms, abdomen, back and face. These grafts can then be inserted into areas of hair loss.
THE USE OF BEARD HAIR FOLLICLES FOR THE SEVERELY BALD
Dr. Umars patient received a combination of donor grafts from the beard area and the head. In most men, facial hair tends to grow quite abundantly. The quantity of follicles in this region can be particularly advantageous for severely bald individuals. These follicles can be re purposed to help reverse the signs of hair loss. Non head hair usually takes about two years to display its fullest growth. Research and results on actual patients show that hair from body follicles lasts long term.
In a recent report by Psychcentral.com, it was written that research has been completed involving the link between physical activity and obesity. The newest part of the study has confirmed that when an individual has become obese, they will have a reduced amount of physical activity.
It would seem only natural to come to this conclusion, but there was no concrete evidence that these two factors were actually linked. Professor Larry Tucker, Ph.D. studied the other end of the spectrum to see if being obese really lead to a decrease in activity.
Most people talk about it as if its a cycle, said Tucker, senior author on a study appearing online ahead of print in the journal Obesity.
Half of the cycle has been studied almost without limit. This is the first study of its kind, in many ways, looking at obesity leading to decreases in physical activity over time.
During the research, over 250 participants had an accelerometer attached to them to measure the actual movement and intensity of their activity.
Roughly 35 percent of the population reports that theyre regularly active, Tucker said.
When you actually put an accelerometer on adults and follow them for many days, only about 5 to 7 percent are actually regularly active. We used an objective measure so we could determine genuine movement, not just wishful thinking.
On average, it was found that among those tested, physical activity had dropped over the course of 20 months.
With all the exercise that can be done to help these obese individuals and others with weight problems lose weight, there are other solutions. Using diet supplements can be a big factor in how much people lose when coupled with diet and exercise. One example of a supplement that works well is the diet pill, Liproxenol. Within the last few months, Liproxenol was recently named to The Diet Pill Review's list of the Best Diet Pills of 2012.

Last Friday, the scientific community celebrated DNA Day to commemorate the discovery of the double helix in 1953 and the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003. While these milestones are certainly vital to modern genetics, it turns out science may have just scratched the surface when it comes to applying these principles to human health.
Until very recently, the prevailing theory in the scientific community held that the DNA in genes themselves is solely responsible for gene expression as it applies to health and disease formation. In other words, good health is the result of healthy genes and bad health stems from damaged genes. And while the makeup of the DNA in genes certainly plays a critical role, new research show that it is not the only mechanism at work.
There are more than 3 billon DNA sequences in the human genome, but there are only 20,887 protein-coding genes in each cell of the body, equivalent to 2% of the whole genome. The number of genes is similar to that of simple life forms such as a fruit fly or even a microscopic roundworm. So what about the other 98% of the genome, the so-called junk DNA? Clearly it has a major role to play in making humans human.
Epigenetics and lunasin
In September 2012, findings published from a large-scale federal project involving 440 scientists from 32 laboratories around the world provided an answer. It turns out that both junk DNA and the DNA packaging material act as genetic switches, informing the genome which genes to turn on and off. It is a complex system that acts like a dimmer for lights, controlling which genes are used in a cell, when they are used and how much they are used, and determining whether a cell becomes a skin cell, a liver cell, a neuron, etc.
So what does all of this mean? It means you have more control over your health than you think you do, said Dr. Alfredo Galvez, research scientist at the Center of Excellence in Nutritional Genomics at UC Davis and lead scientific advisor at the Missouri Plant Science Center. Most of the changes affecting your health dont occur in the genes themselves; they happen in the epigenetic switches. And thats great news. While you cant reverse a gene mutation, you can influence epigenetic switches through lifestyle choices.
Diet is central to it all: quality nutrition provides the fuel for healthy cell function. The soy peptide lunasin is the first nutritive compound clinically shown to promote optimal gene expression in cells through an epigenetic mechanism of action. And no other products optimize bioactive lunasin like Relivs LunaRich line of products. Learn more about LunaRich.
How does lunasin work?
Lunasin gets inside the cell and binds to chromatin in the nucleus. Chromatin is DNA (the genome) wrapped around DNA packaging material called histones (the epigenome). Histones are the main protein components of chromatin, acting as spools around which DNA winds. Modifications to specific tags in histone tails are important in gene regulation. Lunasin binds specifically to these histone tails to affect gene expression.
In the epigenome, lunasin performs two functions:
The result: healthier cells and better health outcomes. Learn more about the benefits of lunasin.
Multiple pathways = multiple benefits
Lunasin influences the epigenome in multiple cell types, so its effects go beyond individual pathways or individual genes. Each epigenome in each cell type is different. If lunasin affects the epigenome in a particular cell type one way, it will affect the epigenome in another cell type another way. Thats how it can provide multiple health benefits:
I believe epigenetics holds the key to the future of health care, Galvez said. Rather than focusing solely on preventing gene mutations via drugs, which target a specific pathway and a specific gene, we need to also explore the multiple pathways and multiple genes that can be influenced through proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices.
And no other company is advancing the nutritional possibilities of the emerging field of epigenetics like Reliv. We are in the middle of a revolution in nutrition and we are all witnesses. The most exciting part is that were really just getting started! Learn more about lunasin and epigenetics.

The study, reported in the Mail Online on Monday, states that slender celebrities cavorting on the beach in bikinis make women feel insecure about their bodies.
The poll of 2,000 men and women, by supermarket Asda, found that women want to lose on average 11lb and as many as 82% intend to slim down by summer, and one in four are motivated to lose weight by bikini pictures.
However, the same percentages do not hold true for men as less than one in five men said they hope to lose weight by summer. Of men who do want to lose weight, nearly two-thirds said they wouldn't be changing their habits until a month before their holiday.
This week is when women are most likely to start their summer bikini diet, according to the study.
More than a quarter of women polled said seeing celebrity bodies gave them the incentive to diet and 15 per cent even admitted to decorating their fridge with celeb thinspiration pictures.
Meanwhile, those in their twenties confessed to crash dieting and using fad weight loss plans in a last minute bid to shape up.
DietAssist understand that motivation is the most important factor in losing weight successfully. There are some key motivating factors that are more successful than others. For example, recently separated men or women tend to be far more successful than someone who wants to lose weight for an existing partner. Obviously the need to get back into shape is a strong motivator so they can be successful on the relationship market.
In essence, self-image is a far greater motivator than general health or a partners feelings.
Paul Howard, from DietAssist, said Because we know that motivation is paramount to the successful dieter, we focus a large part of the DietAssist programme on keeping the motivation up. We are always being asked how to lose weight? and in a nutshell the answer is stay motivated. If the motivation stays high so does the amount of weight loss.
Give them one of the best gifts they will ever receive.
The DietAssist programme is the result of over 20 years experience of helping people to lose weight effectively, and uses the latest psychological techniques to avoid the self sabotage and demotivation that dieters commonly experience.
The DietAssist programme helps dieters strengthen their motivation and resolve, and creates the optimum psychological state for success. It is designed to work alongside any weight loss programme or sensible eating plan.
Michael Scott Lowerys new book, God's Weigh to Your Ideal Body Weight: Your Body Should Glorify God (published by WestBow Press), addresses the subject of dietary holiness. Lowery says, What we eat matters to God. Readers will learn that living at their ideal body weight is Gods will for their lives. Lowery says, This is the birthright of every believer, achievable through dietary holiness.
Lowery says that God has a holy standard of living for every area of life marriage, parenting, work ethic and finances, for instance. In God's Weigh to Your Ideal Body Weight, he provides Biblical evidence that God has a holy standard of living for the area of diet as well. According to Lowery, the Bible communicates that an unhealthy diet is an unholy diet.
An excerpt from God's Weigh to Your Ideal Body Weight:
We are called to glorify God in our bodies, to be a witness to the lost world, to be a light that shines on a hill, and to live above all the nations. The Church is called to be a beacon of hope, an example of successful living, and a testimony to the wisdom and power of God in our lives. An overweight Church fails to accomplish this God-ordained calling to the fullest extent of its potential; living as a mere shadow of what it could and should be. The Church should be the healthiest demographic on the planet. God is not glorified when His people are overweight.
Lowery believes the Bible is the greatest health and weight loss book ever written. In Gods Weigh to Your Ideal Body Weight, readers will learn how to reach their ideal body weight through Gods diet plan, the five spiritual keys to reaching their ideal body weight and seven practical suggestions for reaching their ideal body weight.

Most often when a person diets, he or she ends up gaining back all the weight theyve lost, if not more. Now researchers are recognizing that this happens due to feelings of deprivation, making appetite control supplements such as Liproxenol beneficial to sustaining lifelong weight loss.
On May 11, 2013, a study was released in an issue of NeuroImage which involved two groups of teens who agreed to limit the number of calories they consumed. They essentially mimicked what happens when people, generally adults, diet.
Researchers studied the brains of these adolescents to see their responses in the attention and reward areas when they were shown pictures of foods that looked appealing and unappealing, as well as images of glasses of plain old water and chocolate milkshakes.
They found that the more the teens diets were restricted, the greater responsiveness they showed with foods that were unhealthy. This may account for why people tend to gain weight when they go off a diet as they have increased their mental triggers for wanting the very foods they limited themselves from having while practicing caloric restriction.
This suggests that weight loss supplements such as Liproxenol may ease this response as it also suppresses the appetite, resulting in reduced feelings of restriction. Liproxenol is a weight loss supplement that contains all natural ingredients such as green tea, vitamin B6, cayenne powder and dandelion root. It was created by Liproxenol Nutraceuticals to increase metabolism, decrease appetite and burn excess fat.
About Liproxenol Nutraceuticals:
Liproxenol Nutraceuticals is recognized as an industry leader in the fields of health, wellness and better living. The company's products are enjoyed by customers around the world and are among a new class of supplements that are not only effective but also safe and made from 100% all-natural ingredients. Liproxenol Nutraceuticals is based in Australia and the USA.
Study published in the Nutrition journal supported by The National Confectioners Association found that those who enjoyed sweet treats every other day were not at higher risk of disease.
These new findings are not a signal that it's okay to eat chocolate and sweets in huge quantities. What the study shows is that 'a little of what you fancy' wont make people obese or at risk of a heart attack. The keyword is 'little', a small 100g bar of chocolate contains over 500 calories and 57g sugar.
A study of more than 5,000 Americans found no link between poor health and eating sweets regularly and by regularly they mean some sweets every other day.
Obviously eating a few sweets every other day is not a problem as the study shows. However, for those eating a packet or two a day or perhaps a couple of bars of chocolate a day, it would make sense to reduce this if they want to lose weight.
Paul Howard, co-creator of the DietAssist programme, said "It's plain common sense that a few sweets every other day is not going to be a problem, the same as a small piece of cake a couple of times a week isn't. But to achieve and maintain weight loss there has to be a shift in the desire for these types of food, and of course the more often you eat them, the more you want them.
"People on the DietAssist programme simply find the desire for sweets and chocolate is turned down and therefore much easier to resist. If you don't desire something, as a rule you won't eat it, even if it's offered to you. This in itself is a powerful change for most people and it helps them reduce their calorie intake in a very simple fashion."
In a report on sciencedaily.com, a research was done that shows that women who engage in the fat talk, which includes negative remarks that are made in relation to eating, exercise, or their bodies, arent liked as much by their peers as those who dont talk negatively about themselves.
The study was led by Alexandra Corning, who is the research associate professor of psychology and the director of Notre Dames Body Image and Eating Disorder Lab; college-aged women were presented with photos of women who were noticeably thin or noticeably overweight, who engaged in either fat talk or positive body talk. The participants were asked to rate these women on different dimensions, like how likeable they were.
Those women in the photos were rated less likeable when they made fat talk statements about their bodies, regardless of if they were overweight or not. The ones who made positive comments on their physical image were rated more likeable by the participants.
"Though it has become a regular part of everyday conversation, 'fat talk' is far from innocuous," according to Corning.
"It is strongly associated with, and can even cause, body dissatisfaction, which is a known risk factor for the development of eating disorders."
Psychologists believe that fat talk has been thought to initiate and strengthen a womans social bonds. The research done by Corning has resulted in the findings that fat talkers are less liked than those women who speak positively about their bodies.
"These findings are important because they raise awareness about how women actually are being perceived when they engage in this self-abasing kind of talk," Corning says.
If body image is important to a person, taking diet supplements can help them lose weight.
