DermUtopia Seeks to Bring Dermatological Care to the Underserved Hispanic Community

Fairfax, VA (PRWEB) May 12, 2013

Teledermatology has been shown to be a successful way to bring dermatological care to patients in an efficient and effective manner. Many skin conditions benefit from early treatment and the ability for a doctor to see the condition when the symptoms are active and acute. DermUtopia connects patients to a DermUtopia dermatologist via a HIPAA-compliant, secure phone application. The ClickMedix phone application enables patients to submit medical history and photographs of the concerning area of skin as a virtual consultation. These electronic consultations can be used for all types of skin problems. After submitting the consultation, a DermUtopia dermatologist reviews and examines the patient history and images thoroughly and within 24 to 72 hours responds with a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Three generations of women, Hilda Cabrera-Dintiman, Dr. Brenda Dintiman and Christine Shanahan have worked together to identify that limited access to care for patients is a significant issue that must be overcome in order to improve the state of the medical community. This problem is significantly pronounced in the local Hispanic communities. According to the journal American Family Physician, Latinos comprise nearly 16 percent of the U.S. population, and this proportion is anticipated to increase to 30 percent by 2050. Barriers to care have resulted in striking disparities in quality of health care for these patients. These barriers include language, lack of insurance, different cultural beliefs, and in some cases, illegal immigration status, mistrust and illiteracy.

With the goal of reaching the underserved Hispanic populations, Hilda Cabrera-Dintiman, translated the teledermatology mobile app and consultation to Spanish to increase access to care for these Virginia residents. The launch of DermUtopia during Mothers Day week is in honor of Hilda Cabrera-Dintiman who passed away on March 21, 2013.

Northern Berkshire Beekeepers Association Meeting, May 28, 2013, North Adams Massachusetts Price Chopper Community Room

North Adams, MA (PRWEB) May 28, 2013

The Northern Berkshire Beekeepers Association (NBBA) May 28, 2013 meeting will take place 7:00 PM at the North Adams, Massachusetts Price Chopper Community Room on the 2nd floor.

In the context of extremely heavy honey bee losses reported by bee keepers nationwide last year, NBBA members Claude and Janet Hoard can be proud of losing only 3 hives out of 60. At this month's meeting, they will share their vast knowledge of beekeeping experience, management practices, and will be available for questions and answers.

In addition, there will be a celebratory cake in honor of Lloyd Vosburgh, founding member and first president of NBBA for his lifetime of service to honey bees and achievement as Massachusetts Beekeeper of the Year.

I encourage anybody in the North Adams, Massachusetts region who has an interest in beekeeping in to join the Northern Berkshire Beekeepers Association, said Mary Ross of the Mohawk Valley Trading Company where they specialize in raw varietal honey. Varietal honey is made primarily from the nectar of a particular type of blossom or flower. To capture the unique character and flavor of the blossom or flower, beekeepers must study botanical bloom and flowering patterns when planning hive placement.

About Honey Bees

Bees are insects that are related to wasps and ants and there are approximately 20,000 known species of bees found on every continent except Antarctica. Honeybees (Apis mellifera) are not native to the United States as they were introduced by Europeans to produce honey and beeswax. Honeybees are responsible for pollinating 80% of flowering crops, and without them the worlds food supply would be dramatically reduced.

As people become more conscious of the important role that honeybees play in their daily lives, beekeeping is becoming more mainstream and is now allowed in many urban and suburban municipalities. Since 2006, beekeepers in the North America and Europe have noticed a mystifying occurrence called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) in which worker bees from a beehive or European honey bee colony abruptly disappear, leaving the queen and insect larvae behind, unable to fend for themselves. While such disappearances have occurred throughout the history of apiculture, the term colony collapse disorder was first applied to a drastic rise in the number of disappearances of Western honey bee colonies in North America in late 2006.

In 2013, a formal review by the European Food Safety Authority stated that recent studies show that neonicotinoid pesticides, some of the most widely used pesticides in the world, pose an unacceptably high risk to bees, and that the industry-sponsored science upon which regulatory agencies' claims of safety have relied is flawed and possibly deliberately deceptive.

Honey has been used by humans since ancient times for its health benefits and as a sweetener and flavoring for many foods and beverages, with tea being the most popular. Next to maple syrup, it is the most commonly used natural sweetener in North America.

Honey bees make honey by collecting nectar from flowers and regurgitating it into beeswax honeycombs inside their hive. Beeswax is a natural wax produced in the hive of honey bees of the genus Apis and its most popular uses are beeswax candles and as an ingredient in natural skin care products.

The flavor and color of honey is determined by the type of flower the bees gather the nectar from; therefore, when cooking or baking with honey it is a good idea to taste the honey before using it in a recipe. For example: a dark honey like tulip poplar-black locust honey will result in a strong, heavy, pungent flavor, whereas orange blossom honey will result in a delicate orange flavor. Dark-colored honey is considered to be higher in minerals and antioxidants than light-colored honey, and one of the most well-known dark-colored honeys is buckwheat honey. Raw buckwheat honey contains a higher amount of minerals and an antioxidant called polyphenol, which gives it its dark color. The health benefits of buckwheat honey are many and well known.

The rawest honey available is comb honey which is sections of the hexagonal-shaped beeswax cells of the honeycomb that contain raw honey that have been cut from the wooden frames of a beehive.

Using raw honey is a long-term investment strategy for optimal health and personal care; the dividends are overall mental, physical and spiritual well-being. Like a blue chip stock, raw honey should be included in any health-conscious consumers immune system boosting portfolio and the return on investment of substituting honey for refined sugar in the human diet is incalculable.

Another product made by honey bees and used by humans is bee propolis; a resinous substance that honey bees collect from tree buds and bark or other botanical sources and mix with beeswax, nectar and pollen. This mixture is used by bees to seal gaps in the hive and by humans for its health benefits and as a traditional, natural or homeopathic medicine.

Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) November 28, 2012

Abbey Delray South senior living community in Delray Beach has achieved a deficiency-free score. For the fourth year in a row, the community received zero citations for quality care, and earned a national 5-Star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The Agency for Health Care Admission (AHCA) comes unannounced every year, and conducts annual surveys at health care centers throughout the state of Florida.

The deficiency-free rating is a reflection of our commitment to the care we provide, said David Randazzo, executive director for Abbey Delray South. Our entire team at Abbey Delray South has been working diligently to exceed resident expectations. Im proud that weve been recognized for our efforts.

With more than 200 regulations to follow every day, theres the potential to experience minor human errors, but the staff at Abbey Delray South proves that isnt the case and continues to take admissions even during the survey window.

We have a great staff at the Health Center and they work hard every day to make sure our residents are happy. said Carolyn Bachonski, director of nursing for the Health Center.

Delray Beach Senior Living Community Becomes Exclusive FAU Research Study Site

Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) June 13, 2013

Abbey Delray South has become the first senior living community to participate in on-site research studies with Florida Atlantic University (FAU). Faculty and PhD candidates from FAUs College of Nursing are conducting the exploratory studies on a variety of health and wellness initiatives. Abbey Delray South residents are excited about the opportunity to take an active role in helping advance the understanding and treatment of various conditions to allow older adults to lead healthier lives.

This is a great new opportunity for our community, and were happy to provide or participate in anything that promotes healthy aging, says David Randazzo, executive director at Abbey Delray South. These studies have the potential to be real game changers.

Residents love to be involved in different activities, and when I asked people here about participating in these studies, a lot of hands went up, says Abbey Delray South resident, Dr. Elizabeth Force, who has a PhD in Epidemiology and initiated the research partnership with FAU.

Its really special and unique to have a senior living community open their doors to us for these studies, says Dr. Lenny Chiang-Hanisko, associate professor at FAUs College of Nursing, who is conducting one of the research studies. We spend quite a bit of time at Abbey Delray South interacting with residents, which is extremely helpful to advance the studies and, ultimately, discover better ways to promote healthy aging.

The first study, conducted by Dr. Chiang-Hanisko and currently underway at the retirement community, is on polypharmacy and pain management across different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

An upcoming study at Abbey Delray South will be on the relationship between sleep disturbances and risk of falls. In particular, it will examine sleep hygiene the behavioral habits and environmental factors that precede sleep and may interfere with sleep.

The university will share its research findings with us, and it will allow us to learn how we can provide an even better level of service to our residents, Randazzo says. Senior living communities are always looking for ways to show how innovative and advanced they are with healthy aging initiatives, and I think partnerships like this with universities is something more will explore and try to establish.

Doctors Health Press Issues a Statement on Study: Community Gardening May be an Effective Weight Loss Method

Boston, MA (PRWEB) May 02, 2013

Doctors Health Press, a division of Lombardi Publishing Corporation and publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, recently issued a statement commenting on a new study finding that community gardening may be an effective method for weight loss.

As Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin notes, in recent years, community gardening has become increasingly popular in urban areas. Basically, members of a community start their own vegetable garden on a rooftop or an available plot of land. Whats interesting about this trend is that its participants tend to have lower body mass indices (BMIs) and are far less likely to be obese than the rest of the community. BMI is a measure that represents the relationship between a persons height and weight; a BMI of 25 or over indicates an overweight individual, while 18.524.9 indicates normal weight.

As the e-newsletter article This Springtime Activity Could Bring Your Weight Down reports, community gardeners in Salt Lake City, Utah, took part in a study examining how ones hobby impacted his or her weight. A total of 200 participants were studied and compared to neighbors, spouses, and siblings. This cross-section is important to consider for a few reasons:

People who live in the same community have access to the same things, particularly food
