Spring is Allergy Season for Cats and Dogs

Most people are not aware of the affects of allergies on their pets. Signs of an allergic reaction in dogs and cats differ from those in people. Commonly pets will be scratching, biting, rubbing and/or chewing themselves. Other symptoms include, but are not limited to head shaking, ear problems, re-current skin infections, skin rashes, respiratory problems and intestinal problems.

The most common reason a pet has allergies is due to inheriting from their parents the tendency toward producing an immune response to specific allergens. Repeated exposure to the offending allergen over a period of months to years will eventually cause symptoms. Typically there are short periods of symptoms which may be mild to unnoticeable. Repeated exposure over time causes the pet to experience longer periods of discomfort and more severe symptoms, which is usually when the pet owner notices a problem.

The most frequently seen allergens in pets are to food, dust/storage mites, fleas, and molds. Many pets are also allergic to tree and grass pollens. When seasonal allergies are combined with other allergens the signs and symptoms are more intense.

The months are turning colder, and with the colder weather its always a good idea for owners to be monitoring their dogs health. One health problem in specific that is important to be watching out for is mange in dogs. Mange is a problem often occurring in dogs which consists of rashes on their skin caused by mites, and frequent itching of those rashes. While continuing to take furry friends to the outdoor parks, it's good to be aware of how the cold weather and interaction with other dogs may be affecting them. Mites continue to live throughout the winter months and therefore continue to infect dogs. It is important to be incredibly careful while taking dogs outside if they have already contracted mange. Mange causes a loss of hair and animals may die or experience incredible discomfort from the cold due to the loss of their insulating layer of fur.

While it's commonly known that dog mange is caused by a wide variety of mites, it is crucial to know exactly what to look for and what the symptoms and signs of mange are. Dogs generally contract mites from an unclean, infested area or from other infected animals. Mange can be become very serious if left untreated and can spiral out of control. Dogs can tend to get a bit more scruffy in winter months due to the increasing amount of mud or puddles. However, there is a significant difference between unclean, scruffy fur, and fur that is plagued with mange. Symptoms such as hair loss, itching, irritation and scabs on the skin, all attribute to mange. While those symptoms are the most common, there are also more uncommon symptoms to be looking out for. Uncommon symptoms may consist of a fever, lethargy, and weight loss.

If dog owners believe that their dog has contracted mange it's critical to get treatment for them right away. The cold weather makes it increasingly difficult to deal with, as it may further dry out the dogs skin and cause more itching. It is important to contact a veterinarian immediately to begin a treatment plan specifically designed for the dogs infection. Dog mange treatment can often be a difficult task, as missing one small dosage of medication or the incompletion of treatment may lead to a re-infestation very quickly. It is also important to note that any animal that has come in contact with an infected dog must also be treated for mange, even if no symptoms are present. Those who have an outdoor dog or frequent the dog parks, must be sure to check their dogs for symptoms of mange regularly. It is best to identify and treat mange as soon as possible.

Mange in dogs is not easily treated with medicated shampoos, topical ointments and dips. The use of medicated ointments or dips may take between four to six weeks before the infection is resolved. Treatment plans may vary, as they depend on the type of mange the dog has contracted. If a dog is prescribed a medicated dip or topical ointment, the hair should be clipped as short as possible to ensure the product comes in contact with the skin. This further loss of hair, is also another reason why the animal may become increasingly sensitive to the winter air. Once a dog has contracted mange it is best to keep their skin protected and out of the harsh outdoor climate.

It is always important to maintain cleanliness within the home in order to prevent the contracting, or spreading of mange. This includes cleaning a dogs bedding and blankets, vacuuming and shampooing the carpets, as well as focusing on areas the dog plays and sleeps. These are all effective traits in ridding a home of mites and creating a comfortable living place for a dog. Mange can also be prevented by feeding the dog foods and vitamins rich with anti-oxidants. This will improve the dogs immune system, and will help fight off mites before they have a chance to burrow into a dogs skin.

Once again, it is critical to be maintaining pets cleanliness, especially within the winter months, as they are more often coming in contact with dirt and other dogs. Michele Green is getting used to the hum of sewing machines in her finished basement. Her Mom and Aunt (Phyllis Dobrik) used to sew her Ice Skating costumes when she was growing up. But recently, Michele taught herself to sew.

"I had a dog that was very sick during the winter, and we couldn't find a coat of quality let alone large enough to fit him," explained Green.

Her Rottweiler-Shepherd "Chase" had been shaved for surgery and hated going outside in the wet, freezing snow, as he was fighting an aggressive blood cancer.

She tried large sweatshirts to cover him, but it didn't work well as Chase would still end up wet from the rain or snow. He passed away before she could come up with a solution.

So approximately two years ago, with the combined measurements of Chase as well as my St. Bernard Madison who also passed away, I just sketched out a pattern and created the coat. I realized that there really wasnt anything on the market for the very large breed, let alone something of quality that would last throughout the seasons. It really became a concern when my large breed dogs were getting older and suffering from different diseases or ailments. I wanted to bring comfort to the ailing large breed dog, who we just assume because of their size or long hair they dont require the protection from the elements or to keep dry. Madison suffered from nerve damage that rendered her back legs lame, so I would have to walk Madisons back legs for her in the elementsregardless, if it was spring and just raining or during a harsh Michigan snow storm, she also suffered from arthritis and as humans we cant stand to be cold or wet while we are feeling under the weather and I am sure its just as uncomfortable to our family pets who are aging said Green.

She calls it The Chase Coat. An embroidered patch even bears her beloved dog's image.

She launched the coat in the spring of 2011. It costs about $ 199.

"The outer layer is neoprene which is used for scuba diving, so the rain/snow literally just runs off the coat without it penetrating the material keeping the animal dry, as well as the material allows the body temperature of the animal to adjust naturally in any weather condition be it spring/fall rain or winter snow/sleet season. I wanted to utilize a very unique/durable material in making the coat and because of the material that I used it is more expensive than your run of the mill paper thin dog coat" said Green.

The inner layer is a soft, plush Polartec which is often used as a lining in sturdy, warm winter coats for humans.

The coat can be easily slipped over the dogs head, as the velcro on either side of the coat holds the coat in place at the chest. The coat has two soft straps with velcro on the ends and the two straps wrap underneath the dog just at the base of the ribs.

Susan Comerzan's St. Bernard Samson has been modeling and wearing the coat since the winter of 2011.

"I took him for a walk in the rain. I put it on him then because it kept him dry. And then when I left him outside when my kids are shoveling [snow] or my kids are playing, he goes out there and plays [with the coat on]," said Comerzan.

She laughed and added, "It prevents that 'wet dog smell' that nobody likes."

Green says her parents help with cutting the materials and sewing, but she takes care of the design work.

I had also stumbled into starting to make the coat for the smaller breed. I had heard that Wendy Diamonds (the founder and editor of Animal Fair magazine in New York) pet, which was a Maltese named Lucky, was diagnosed with a similar cancer that had taken Chase. I felt compelled to downsize the pattern, customize the coat to fit Lucky and ship the coat off to Wendy for Lucky to enjoy. I was unable to get the coat concept completed in time for Chase but, in some small way I felt that I had made it up to Chase through Lucky and I hope that I brought some comfort to her. Now along with our standard size Chase Coat Classic, I am able to customize the coat for our clients to their pets specified size or breed, said Green.

The home shopping network had made inquiries about her family start-up business when it launched. As well as, The Chase Coat was an Editors pick in the October, 2011 issue of Pet Product News/Pet Product Style.

A Hollywood swag event had even including The Chase Coat in goodie bags for the yearly Hollywoof event for animal-loving A-listers.

1. There are still a lot of chemicals that have been dropped on the streets to keep them from icing so clean your dogs paws with a wet cloth after going for a walk until you're sure enough Spring rain has washed away those remnants of winter. Likewise, when the temperature gets warmer protect his feet from getting scorched on hot surfaces like asphalt.

2. If you've been using a winter coat or sweater on your dog it's time to lighten up. Dogs can overheat quickly. Take his clothing off as soon as he goes inside.

3. Don't shave long haired dogs for the summer. Their coats protect them from the sun's damaging rays. Leave enough length so you can't see his skin. Dog's can get sunburn just like people. If your dog has had surgery or has hot spots where there is hair missing and he is going to be out in the sun for long periods of time, either use sunscreen for babies or tie a tee shirt on him to protect his skin. If he has a light nose he is more prone to sunburn just like light skinned people so rub a little baby sunscreen on his nose and if he spends a lot of time on his back in the sun, rub it on his entire underside. Do not ever use a sunscreen with zinc oxide because it is toxic to dogs.

4. Dogs can have allergies to pollen, dust and mold just like humans do. They can have seasonal allergies too. Your dog may have symptoms like coughing, itching, sneezing and changes in his coat. Never give human medicine to dogs unless under the direction of your Vet. There are canine allergy medicines that are very effective. 8. All dogs are not great swimmers. Stay close to your dog at the ocean and fresh water. Ocean dangers include undertow, jellyfish and dehydration if he ingests too much salt water. Seek medical attention if vomiting and diarrhea occur. Dogs can get heat stroke too. In lakes, ponds and rivers, dangers to your dog include parasites and bacteria that are present in the water. Always keep plenty of fresh water available for your dog especially by the shore.
