OTJ Commercial Architects Supports Industry Philanthropy through Fundraising Campaign

(PRWEB) April 10, 2013

OTJ Architects has worked with Angela Poliskey, Senior Project Manager with commercial real estate firm Cassidy Turley, to complete several successful architectural design projects including Avalon Consulting, the Department of Defenses Mark Center and Management Sciences for Health.

However, her managerial efforts and helping ways do not end when she leaves the office. Earlier this year, Poliskey was nominated to use her leadership skills to conduct an individual fundraising campaign for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) as a 2013 Woman of the Year candidate. Her campaign kicked off on March 28 at The Huxley in Washington, DC, and runs through June 8. Her teams goal is to raise $ 200,000 in 10 weeks and to be linked to an LLS-funded, cutting-edge research portfolio to help people living with blood cancers.

Cancer research is an incredibly important cause and one that I have good reason to care about, Poliskey said. My friend Susan is a 13-year survivor of both leukemia and lymphoma I only wish every story was as uplifting. My mother-in-law lost her beloved husband, Joe, to leukemia and almost everyone I know has lost a loved one or knows someone who has been affected by cancer of some sort.

Cancer research and the fundraising that helps to support it can decrease the impacts of these diseases. According to LLS research information, more than one million Americans are living with blood cancers, every four minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer, every 10 minutes someone dies from blood cancers and leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20.

To help Poliskeys fundraising efforts, her team is hosting several events. Contact Poliskey at angela.poliskey(at)cassidyturley(dot)com if you are interested in attending:

April 23 from 5-7 p.m.: LLS Fundraising Wine Tasting (City Club of Washington; 555 13th St. NW, Washington, DC; $ 125/person)
April 30 from 6-8 p.m.: LLS Fundraising Floral Design Class (Karin's Florist; 527 Maple Ave East, Vienna, VA; $ 100/person; attendees will leave with a $ 50 arrangement and the other $ 50 will go toward the cause; 15% of all in-store sales will be applied toward the campaign; call to reserve: 703.242.4692)
May 21 from 5-7 p.m.: LLS Fundraising Happy Hour (Capital Grille; 1861 International Dr., McLean, VA; suggested advanced donations of $ 50/person)

According to Poliskeys fundraising page, LLS's continued advancements over the years, are responsible for the blood cancer survival rate doubling and tripling; in some cases, the survival rate has even quadrupled. And many LLS-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers. They're even being tested in clinical trials for patients with a range of cancers including lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers.

Poliskeys work with LLS will help rally fundraising support and also provides a way for colleagues to work together to achieve a common goal, which furthers the importance of philanthropic efforts in the workplace.

I attended an event in support of my coworker last year, Poliskey said. LLS staff, past candidate mentors and support staff are all so supportive and caring. Helping those who continue to battle cancer is the reason behind it all.

For those interested in helping this great cause, donations are tax deductible. These donations not only support LLS research but also fund patient services, advocacy, public and professional education and community services as well.

New York Medical Malpractice Lawyer David Perecman Supports New Efforts to Increase Hand Washing Frequency by Doctors and Nurses

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 05, 2013

New York medical malpractice lawyer David Perecman understands that lawyers who sue hospitals for infections may use hand-washing compliance rates as part of the information they use to prove or disprove the alleged facts. Now, a number of hospitals are using motion sensors to check to see if doctors and nurses are washing their hands. The sensors go off every time someone enters an intensive care room. They trigger a video camera, which transmits its images to workers in India, who check to see who is washing their hands, reported [The New York Times (5.29.13).

The hospitals are using the sensors to increase hand-washing rates and prevent infection. According to The New York Times, hospital-acquired infections cost $ 30 billion and lead to nearly 100,000 patient deaths a year.

The failure of doctors and nurses to regularly wash their hands is a common and major cause of infectious disease among hospital patients, said Perecman, a medical malpractice lawyer in New York for over 30 years. Every effort to get medical professionals to wash their hands is welcome.

Hospital workers in studies have been observed washing their hands as little as 30 percent of the time that they interact with patients, said The New York Times.

To encourage more hand-washing, other hospitals in the U.S. are training hand-washing coaches, using radio-frequency ID chips that note when healthcare professionals have passed by a sink, handing out rewards like free coffee coupons, hiring undercover monitors, or using other methods to encourage hand washing.

If preventing infection and saving lives is not incentive enough, under new federal rules, hospitals will lose Medicare money when patients get infections that should have been prevented, The New York Times reported.

Infections acquired in hospitals can do more than increase hospital stays. They can kill people, Perecman said.

Studies show that health care workers do not wash their hands for a number of reasons, including complaints about dry skin, emergency environment pressures, tedium, and resistance to authority, reported The New York Times.

Frequently washing hands and using proper hand washing techniques reduces the chances of preventable illnesses, said Perecman. Patients are in the hospital seeking to improve their health. No one seeking care should contract a illness that may be costly and-or deadly because of preventable hospital mistakes.

There is really no excuse for failing to follow simple sanitary protocols, added Perecman.

Compensation in malpractice cases can include coverage of medical bills and lost wages, as well as damages for pain and suffering. Damages can also be paid for future losses such as future medical expenses and wages.

If a person acquires an infection while in a hospital or other health care facility, a New York medical malpractice attorney may be able to investigate whether or not there is a claim against the health care provider.

Lawyers at The Perecman Firm can provide knowledgeable, aggressive representation for victims of medical malpractice in New York. Contact The Perecman Firm at 212-977-7033.

USO Supports Military Children When They Need it Most

Arlington, VA (PRWEB) April 01, 2013

April is nationally recognized as Month of the Military Child and the USO will honor our nations youngest heroes with events and activities at USO locations worldwide. The USO has a 72-year history of supporting military children as they cope with unique challenges like the stresses of being away from a parent during deployment and what its like when a parent returns home different- adjusting to life with visible and invisible wounds. In the 10 years since the United States invasion of Iraq, the USO has continually adapted to meet the needs of our nations military families.

There are more than 1.2 million children with a parent in the United States military, of those 220,000 have a parent deployed and many have endured the stresses of multiple deployments. Whether they are worrying about a loved one in harms way or facing the challenges that can arise when families are reunited after a lengthy deployment, the USO is standing with them.

The USO adapts to meet the needs of those who need us most. To support our nations youngest heroes, we have made a commitment to providing programs and services to help them lead strong family lives today, tomorrow and in the future, said Susan Thomas, Vice President, USO Warrior and Family Care. The USO provides opportunities for families to stay connected during deployment, comforting them when they are facing unimaginable life challenges, and support their transition when mom or dad returns home.

This month the USO will support our nations littlest heroes with USO programs and events worldwide including:

With You All the Way: Trevor Romain will be engaging in activities around the Nations Capitol including tour stops at Fort Meade and Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, as well as Fort Belvoir in Virginia, where he will officially kick off the Month of the Military Child in a presentation alongside the installation command. Romain will also engage with Congressional leaders on Capitol Hill during an assembly event for the Taking Care of You kits (benefitting children of wounded soldiers) and join a panel of three other family and child health professionals at the second annual With You All the Way Symposium at Fort Belvoir. With You All the Way will then travel to Twentynine Palms, CA to deliver presentations to children of those stationed at the Marine Combat Training Center.

The Little CHAMPS: The book The Little CHAMPS: Child Heroes Attached to Military Personnel follows the children of five service members, each representing a branch of the military, as they cope with deployments, saying goodbye, and when a parent returns home wounded. In addition to providing copies of the book to USO Centers Worldwide, this April the USO will bring the books author, Debbie Fink, to the Pacific Region to present her book and educational curriculum to nearly 6,000 military children.

Sesame Street/USO Experience: The Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families made its debut in July 2008, to help families deal with the challenges of deployment and homecomings. Since its inception, the tour has taken its message to more than 368,000 troops and military families and performed 631 shows on 145 military installations in 33 states and 11 countries. Additionally, the tour logged more than 122,000 miles and distributed more than 2 million giveaways. This spring, the tour will once again be hitting the road to visit 42 installations in 8 countries in the Europe and Pacific regions.

USO Centers: USO centers provide a warm and comforting place where troops can connect with home via Internet or telephone. USO centers also provide a place for military families to come together and connect with one another to support each other in difficult times. USO Center events focused on military children for Month of the Military Child include:

NewVo Beauty Supports Consumer Education on the Best Types of Flat Irons for Hair

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) April 25, 2013

Following an article by Tulsa World, online beauty supply store NewVo Beauty seeks to educate consumers on the best types of flat irons for hair and provide tips on how to properly use them.

According to the article, it is common for most consumers to pick the most popular brand of flat iron without considering the material it is made from. Pam Martin, head of the cosmetology department at Clary Sage College, commented in the article and insisted that the type of material in the flat iron is crucial to keeping hair healthy. Check your heating tools to make sure they're good quality because even ceramic ones can chip, which can snag your hair and cause hot spots and uneven heat distribution, says Martin.

Its important to remember that not all styling tools are the same; research should be done before determining the product that is best for your hair, says NewVo Beauty Representative Sara Greenstone. When it comes to flat irons you need to consider the quality and material its made with. For example, gold-plated irons get extremely hot and sometimes do not have a protective coating. Using flat irons that do not have a protective coating may eventually lead to damaged hair.

In the article, Martin continues by explaining that damage done to hair cannot be repaired easily. She offers these preventative tips when using a flat iron:

Your styling tool should never be too hot, no matter how thick or thin your hair is.

Make sure to use a thermal protection spray; it will protect hair from some of the damage that heat can cause.

Use conditioner on your hair and make sure your daily routine includes moisturizing.

A flat iron is a great styling tool, says Greenstone. You just have to know the proper way to use it!

Online Beauty Supply Store NewVo Beauty Supports Healthy Ways to Care for Skin and Hair During the Summer Months

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) May 23, 2013

On May 23, following an article discussing the best ways to care for hair and skin during the summer months, NewVo Beauty commends efforts to promote healthy sun protection beauty regimes.

According to an article published by The Pendulum, it is important to consider using sunscreen before using tanning oil in the sun. It only takes one sunburn to nearly double the risk for developing deadly forms of skin cancer.

Despite an individuals skin tone, everyone is susceptible to the suns powerful rays. The article states that even when people are fully clothed, there is still a possibility of getting sunburned. NewVo Beauty representative Sara Greenstone recommends using a daily facial moisturizer with SPF. Opt for a moisturizer that has an SPF level of 15 or above. What most people dont realize is that sunscreen is also important year round. You can get sunburned in any season. A daily product that includes an SPF ensures that you are always protected.

The sun doesnt only affect your skin; it can burn your hair too. UV rays can make hair brittle in the summer months. The article suggests using a shampoo or conditioner that includes an SPF. A hair serum with the same ingredients can also work just as well.

Many hair care lines are beginning to include SPF in their products, says Greenstone. With the summer approaching, its important to remember sun safety. Sun protection products for your hair and skin can easily be found at a beauty supply store. Before you dive into beach season, make sure you stock up on products that will make a difference in keeping your skin and hair healthy.

Lean On Life Supports New Research for Self-Guided Treatment of Childhood Obesity

TORONTO, ON (PRWEB) April 03, 2013

Lean On Life, a leading healthy lifestyle website with the latest on weight loss, nutrition and fitness is supporting a recent study looking into guided self-help in fighting childhood obesity.

Usually, intervention methods for childhood obesity involve family-based treatment (including consultations, exercise, nutrition counselling, and time-consuming clinical visits). Given that many families dont have the time, resources, or money to afford these forms of treatment, a new self-guided approach would be beneficial.

A recent study led by Kerri Boutelle, PhD, at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine has found that a self-guided program for obese children and parents is a viable option for treating obesity, especially with added clinical guidance.

The study, conducted by Boutelle and her colleagues, examined 50 overweight or obese children between the ages of 8 and 12 over a five-month period, and then followed up with the participants six months later.

In the study, participants were given a manual and asked to read through a chapter a week. Every other week participants came into the clinic and met with an interventionist for a short period to discuss progress and any issues. Results of the study showed a significant decrease in participants BMI with sustained results six months later.

Based on these findings, Tal Brodsky, Lean Life Coach at Lean On Life suggests that for families that do not have the financial or time resources, a self-guided approach is a good substitute to clinical help.

Generally, the children and families that are most hard-hit by overweight and obesity are the ones that cant afford to get professional help, Brodsky says. By educating these families and giving them resources to make the necessary changes in their lives, we can now reach a whole other population that did not have access to weight management help.

Brodsky emphasizes that the bi-weekly meetings at the clinic are essential to ensuring that families monitor their progress, are held accountable to their commitment, and can receive support when necessary.

If families are looking to improve their health, diets and activity levels, seeking professional help is certainly an effective way to pursue those changes, Brodsky says. However, for those who cannot afford to do so, arming themselves with knowledge and a strong support base is a great alternative that can prove equally successful.

Lean On Life Supports New Research Encouraging Early Introduction of Allergenic Foods

TORONTO, ON (PRWEB) April 17, 2013

Lean On Life, a leading healthy lifestyle website with the latest on weight loss, nutrition and fitness is putting its support behind recent advice encouraging parents to introduce potentially allergenic foods to children at an earlier age.

Contrary to previous medical advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) has recently recommended introducing allergenic foods to infants at an earlier age. The reasoning behind these recommendations is that introducing children to allergenic foods earlier on can help immunize them in the future.

The U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) recently released guidelines which state that delayed introduction of certain foods may actually worsen food allergies. Previously, the AAP issued recommendations to introduce milk after age one, eggs at age two, and peanuts and shellfish at age three. Now, the AAAAI believes that this late introduction may actually be harming children.

Researchers at the NIAID are advising now pediatricians and specialists to begin introducing allergenic foods at an earlier age. Researchers have cited an example of Jewish children in Israel compared with Jewish children in the U.K. A study published in November, 2008 showed that the prevalence of peanut allergies in U.K. children was ten times higher than in Jewish Israeli children. Medical experts believe that this can be attributed to Israeli infants being introduced to peanuts during early weaning stages.

Michelle Schiffman, Nutritionist at Lean On Life, supports the recent theory that early introduction to foods can prevent future allergies. Based on recent findings, we believe that parents can begin introducing potentially allergenic foods at an earlier age, she says.

Schiffman cautions that parents should consult with their pediatricians before introducing certain foods into their childs diet, and be wary of food allergies in the family. While early introduction can prevent later food allergies, parents should still be mindful of existing allergies that run in the family, she says.

Lean On Life Supports Jamie Olivers Food Revolution Day on May 17th

TORONTO, ON (PRWEB) May 15, 2013

Lean On Life, a leading healthy lifestyle website with the latest on weight loss, nutrition, and fitness is supporting celebrity chef Jamie Olivers Food Revolution Day taking place May 17, 2013.

As Lean On Life reports (http://www.leanonlife.com/food-revolution-day-recipe-shaved-asparagus-salad/), the website will be supporting the Food Revolution Day by encouraging others to make a fresh, healthy salad using real, local ingredients and sharing it with others. This event will encourage others to promote cooking skills, eat real food, and to be more mindful of the food they are eating.

According to their website, the Food Revolution Day is a global day of action for people to make a stand for good food and essential cooking skills. It's a chance for people to come together within their homes, schools, workplaces and communities to cook and share their kitchen skills, food knowledge and resources. Food Revolution Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of good food and better food education for everyone by focusing on three simple actions cook it, share it, live it.

Lean On Life believes that by supporting the Food Revolution Day, they are simply reinforcing the core beliefs of the website and its healthy lifestyle experts. At its core, the Food Revolution encourages a back-to-basics mentality of cooking real, healthy food from scratch, says Tal Brodsky, chef and Lean Life Coach. At Lean On Life, we share those beliefs.

Brodsky explains that in the past, cooking fresh food with healthy ingredients wasnt an issue, since families cooked what was available and local to them. However, with the industrialization of food, our ability to ship food around the world, and busier lifestyles, cooking skills are dying and families diets are suffering.

The idea of having one day in which our global community comes together to stand up for real food is one that Lean On Life fully supports, Brodsky says. Were encouraging families everywhere to get inspired by the healthy recipes on the Lean On Life website and to cook their own version of one of those recipes, he says. Most importantly, we encourage everyone to share their food and cooking skills with others, and to make the Food Revolution Day values part of their everyday lifestyles, says Brodsky.

Those wishing to take part in the Food Revolution Day with Lean On Life can RSVP to the event here (http://bit.ly/lolFRD). To learn more about the Food Revolution Day taking place May 17, 2013, visit http://www.foodrevolutionday.com.

Lean On Life Supports New Research Encouraging a Healthy Mix of Dried Fruit

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) May 22, 2013

Lean On Life, a leading healthy lifestyle website with the latest on weight loss, nutrition, and fitness is supporting the incorporation of dried fruit as part of a healthy diet.

As Lean On Life reports (http://www.leanonlife.com/dried-fruit-health-food-or-just-as-bad-as-sugar/), dried fruit means most of the water in the fruit is removed. This results in a fruit that has a stronger, sweeter taste and a higher concentration of nutrients. Like fresh fruit, dried fruit provides a rich source of dietary fiber, iron, copper, potassium, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin Bs, anti-oxidants and sometimes beta-carotene.

All fruits naturally contain sugar either fructose or glucose. The consumption of the sugar in a balanced context of other vitamins, minerals and satiating nutrients such as fiber, leads to a lot of the harmful effects of sugar being cancelled out. In this way, eating sweet fruits is far better than eating refined sugar. Refined sugar has been stripped of all other balancing nutrients and actually stimulates unhealthy cravings, leading to weight gain.

Several recent studies have confirmed that, despite their calorie content, dried fruits do not contribute to significant weight gain when added to the diet. Research has shown that dried fruits do an even better job of safely satisfying hunger and keeping your weight down when you snack on them with a home-made trail mix of raw, unflavored nuts and seeds.

While dried fruit is a great alternative for refined sugary treats, opting for whole fruit rather than packaged dried fruit is still the better choice for losing weight or to simply maintain a healthy diet, says Lean on Life nutritionist, Michelle Schiffman.

Moreover, dried fruits are energy-packed foods that have been scientifically proven to serve as incredible performance enhancers when eaten right before exercise or to simply boost energy levels.

Schiffman adds that it is important to keep a balanced amount of dried-fruit consumption as it is still a source of sugar and calories. Always remember to check that no additional sugars have been added as well.

Lean On Life Supports New Research Cautioning the Consumption of High-Protein Meat

TORONTO, ON (PRWEB) May 29, 2013

Lean On Life, a leading healthy lifestyle website with the latest on weight loss, nutrition, and fitness is supporting new research which cautions against consuming antibiotic-fed animals.

As Lean On Life reports (http://www.leanonlife.com/high-protein-eaters-beware/), meat and protein are essential in a healthy diet for many reasons such as bodily function, health, and weight loss.

However, for over 40 years, the FDA has acknowledged that animal sources of meat have contained antibiotic-resistant bacteria, also known as superbugs. These superbugs pose a serious risk to health, causing potential food-borne illnesses like E. coli and salmonella, and antibiotic resistance.

A recent study published in February 2013 by the Environmental Working Group found that the antibiotic-resistant bacteria in animals is still present, and leads to foodborne illness and infections. These products are currently being sold in many grocery stores in North America.

Farmers and food producers who look after animals claim that antibiotics are used to keep the animals healthy, prevent and control illness, and encourage growth. However, this means that animals are unnecessarily overfed antibiotics and when consumed, human bodies might build a resistance against these antibiotics. Consequently, any sickness that could simply be treated with an antibiotic may require further medical assistance, and the illnesses may become more difficult to treat.

As Lean On Life reports, more than half the samples of ground turkey, pork chops and ground beef collected by the federal government from supermarkets contained bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Lean On Life Coach, Tal Brodsky, says that Although a high-protein diet can be extremely healthy, it is crucial to inspect and keep a mindful eye when buying animal products.

Furthermore, he states that there are organic meat options available that have not been fed antibiotics and do not contain hormone injections. Brodsky also suggests including other high-protein food alternatives into a diet, including legumes, nuts, cheese, or soy products.
