Sounds of Summer: A Hearing and Speech Event

Middletown, NY (PRWEB) May 23, 2013

Summertime evokes thoughts of fun in the sun: picnics, pools, beaches and vacations. Sunscreen is on everyones summer shopping list but summer can be hazardous to more than your skin. Potential risks to your ears from loud sounds such as outdoor concerts, fireworks, lawn mowers and other motorized vehicles are everywhere as well as the impact of air travel and altitude changes which can cause damage particularly if sinuses and ear canals are already congested from a summer cold or allergies. Hudson Valley Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) is hosting an information session and free hearing screenings for listeners of all ages just in time for the summer months. Join audiologists and physicians at Hudson Valley ENTs offices on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Healthy hearing is important at every season and every stage of life, says Debra L. Dziedzic, Senior Audiologist, Hudson Valley ENT. Babies who have trouble hearing dont learn to speak properly because they need to be able to hear and then copy the sounds made by their parents and others around them. School-age children can learn only if they can hear their teachers. In adults, hearing loss can develop gradually but become noticeable relatively quickly.

A representative from Phonak, a hearing aid provider, will be in attendance to answer questions and provide additional information about the companys hearing products. Additionally, Dr. Phillip Massengill, a physician at Hudson Valley ENT and professionally trained opera singer, will provide a demonstration and information on vocal cords. Light refreshments will be provided.
