Grassroots Artists MovEment (G.A.ME) is launching an international vegan/vegetarian tour entitled Boxing as Veg: Tao of Plant-Based Training this year. The tour showcases Omowale Adewale and his vegan lifestyle as a boxer. He will display boxing techniques, grab volunteers for abs/stomach workouts and conduct a powerful presentation on the foods we need to sustain a healthy life. Invitations from organizations to showcase his vegan boxing presentation began rolling in after his successful win at the Brooklyn Brawl competition in December of last year and his article on youth in NYC. Coverage of his extraordinary work in the vegan community began two weeks ago. This year he presented at Greenthumb GrowTogether, NYC Vegetarian Food Festival and the Texas Vegfest.
Wale begins this month with his fight on Thursday May 2 at the Fight for Autism where he will fight at heavyweight (201). Wale will be speaking in New Orleans at the NOLA Veggie Fest on May 11th and May 12th then heading to Geneva, Switzerland to present at the Veggie Pride International on May 17th before heading back to New York for a demonstration at the The Seed Experience on May 19th. His last engagement of the month will be held in Bristol, UK at VegfestUK on May 24th.
The purpose of Boxing as Veg: Tao of Plant-Based Training is to illustrate the beauty of curing yourself of heart disease, diabetes and other illnesses linked to eating habits by becoming vegan and physically active. Wale intends to educate the veg-curious on building muscle and how to find foods rich in protein, iron, and fats without exploiting animals. Wale believes: This awful food system encourages regular consumption of animal products as a necessary source of nutrition all while certifying fast food is a safe and acceptable place to create and consume wholesome nutrients. This should be criminal since most fast food chains have only increased obesity and diabetes among youth. The ultimate goal of Boxing as Veg: Tao of Plant-Based Training would be to create a movement among young people to become community active and powerfully vegan one day at a time.
Omowale was born and raised in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY. He legally changed his name in 2007, but was given the name by a friend during a 2005 visit to Lagos, Nigeria to address health and artist issues. His friend Moyosore was killed in 2007.
Wale was diagnosed with hypertension in his early teens, but after stopping his medication and relying on fruit and vegetable juicing he no longer suffers from hypertension. Wale was vegetarian for 20 years before turning vegan this year. He is the co-founder and executive director of Grassroots Artists MovEment (G.A.ME), a not-for-profit organization in NYC that works to address health issues, artist rights and socio-economic conditions in poverty-stricken black and Latino neighborhoods. G.A.ME intends to develop a boxing gym dedicated to promoting veganism, health and wellness and civic leadership.
After May, Omowale will be in Richmond, Virginia, San Francisco, Italy, India, and London. Omowale is proving that the combination of veganism, community and animal rights activism and boxing can make powerful bedfellows worldwide.
