On May 9, Spartan Race discusses the negative effects of junk food on health and personal finances over time.
In Spartan Races latest blog, Spartan blog editor Carrie Adams breaks down the numbers and tells Spartans why they should stay away from junk food and fast food. Adams references figures from Livestrong.com - vigorous calisthenics such as pushups, sit-ups and burpees can burn 563 calories an hour for a 155 lb. person, 472 for someone weighing 130 lbs. and 645 for someone at 180 lbs.
Many people reward themselves with junk food or a fast food meal after a workout, but Adams challenges that thought. She writes, Saying, I worked out hard today, I earned a fast food value meal, is like saying, I worked out hard today, I am now going to assault my body with garbage and toxins. It may save you a few dollars to load up on tacos, pizza, and burgers but in the end youll pay for it and not just in hours of burpees logged at the gym.
The low price and high calorie content of these foods may help an individual save money in the short term. However, the long-term healthcare costs of chronic diseases from poor lifestyle choices, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, heart disease, pulmonary conditions, and mental illness are greater.
Although many obstacle course racers and mud run participants are extremely fit, Joe De Sena, co-founder and CEO of Spartan Race, advises them to stick to a healthy diet no matter how much exercise they get. While exercising will definitely improve your health, its no excuse to cram your body full of fast food or junk food, he says.
