"Many male patients prefer products that are less moisturizing. Many men don't like a creamy or heavier feel on the skin and don't want to look shiny or as if they have a product on," explains Dr. Irwin.
Additionally, many men often wonder if they can use the same skincare products as women. Dr. Irwin shares that some skincare lines market their skin products as more medical and less gender specific, like SkinMedica. These products tend to not carry heavy perfumes and are more neutral in their texture and fragrance.
Along those lines, Dr. Irwin advises looking for more of a gel-based product, like Hydrating B5 Gel moisturizer from SkinCeuticals, which would absorb into the skin, leaving less heaviness after application. Another suggestion is to look for products with a light lotion base rather than those purport to be a cream. For a sunscreen, the EltaMD UV Clear is a high-quality transparent zinc sunscreen that is very light. The EltaMD UV Daily is a light sunscreen that gives a bit of moisturizing but is not heavy or oily at all. Dr. Irwin also suggests, Many of our males patients also like the powder sunscreen like Colorscience. Another route is to look for products that are formulated for people with acne as those tend to be less creamy as well. They often say noncomedogenic on them.
