Brandith Irwin, MD, Shares Melasma Secrets in a Recent Blog Entry on Cosmetic Dermatology Website, SkinTour.com

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) May 10, 2013

Every week, cosmetic dermatologist Brandith Irwin, MD, answers questions about skin care conditions, treatments and products from readers of her website, SkinTour.com. One of the questions Dr. Irwin answered this week provides information on melasma, a common issue in women.

Melasma is the brown splotchiness on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, or jaw line that is triggered by hormones and light. While hormones stimulate the growth of cells that make brown pigment, natural light stimulates the production of even more brown pigment or melanin. According to Dr. Irwin, "You really have two problems, too many cells making brown pigment and light constantly stimulating those cells resulting in too much dark pigment."

Melasma usually shows up as brown spots or splotches on the forehead, cheeks, jaw line or upper lip. Especially common in women that are undergoing hormonal changes such as pregnancy, menopause, or even taking birth control, melasma can be difficult to treat once it gets started. If you think you may have signs of melasma, Dr. Irwin suggests your first step is finding a qualified dermatologist.

The most important tip from Dr. Irwin for women at home is, "Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! You will not have success treating melasma if you dont block light. Every time ultraviolet light hits these brown spots it makes them worse, that's why your sunscreen must block UVA as well as UVB." In addition to using certain types of UVA and UVB blocking sunscreens, she suggests that you double-up on the areas that have the most blotches with a mineral pigment sunscreen makeup like Colorescience, and finally, wear a hat.

Bleaching creams, microdermabrasion, and light peels can also help reduce discoloration. "If you are considering a laser treatment for melasma, it is imperative you see a dermatologist who is an expert with laser treatments because many lasers will actually make melasma worse," explains Dr. Irwin.

Unlike most prominent dermatologists, Brandith Irwin, MD has no financial ties to any skin care manufacturer or laser company. She does not sit on any boards, act as a spokesperson, accept any fees, or endorse any line of cosmetics. She is a board-certified dermatologist who practices in Seattle, WA, at the practice she founded, Madison Skin & Laser Center. Additionally, she has published multiple anti-aging books, the most recent titled, The Surgery-Free Makeover: All You Need To Know For Great Skin And A Younger Face.

Brandith Irwin, MD, Answers New Blog Question on Her Website SkinTour.com About Improving Facial Volume After Weight Loss

(PRWEB) June 13, 2013

Every week, Brandith Irwin, MD, answers questions from readers of her blog, SkinTour.com. A recent blog provides information about how to refill lost volume in the face after significant weight loss.

"When we are young, our skin has more elasticity and will literally bounce back better after a big weight change," explains Dr. Irwin.

As we age, our skin becomes less elastic and with any weight loss comes sagging skin. According to Dr. Irwin, fillers are often a great solution for people with facial volume loss when their skin tone is still pretty good and they just need to replace the underlying fat that was lost. Fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane are injected into lines, creases, and grooves in the face and provide a near instantaneous correction of medium to deep lines.

Alternatively, Dr. Irwin shares that plastic surgery is also an option for people who have facial volume loss after significant weight loss. "If you really have adequate bone and fat pads and the skin is just quite loose, then plastic surgery might be your best option, says Dr. Irwin. She recommends taking time to do proper research and figuring out what the best options are for your skin type.

Unlike most prominent dermatologists, Dr. Irwin has no financial ties to any skin care manufacturer or laser company. She does not sit on any boards, act as a spokesperson, accept any fees, or endorse any line of cosmetics. Bloomington Indiana Hair Salon Launches New Blog

Indianapolis, IN (PRWEB) April 12, 2013

A Bloomington, IN hair salon has just launched a new blog in partnership with JD Media Surge, LLC to talk about the hair care industry and related matters. Among the matters which will be discussed are shampoos, colors, styles and cuts, dyes and how to manage problem hair.

http://www.inspirationsbloomington.com/blog/

Cutting hair is discussed in connection with the rest of the person. For instance, when considering a hair cut, the kind of face the hair will frame is important. A round face needs a different cut than a long and square face.

What the person plans to do and where they plan to be must also be taken into consideration. Long hair is not appropriate in all circumstances while short hair may not be the kind of style a person wants to have.

Hair dye is something that will be discussed in detail. As not all hair is created equally, not al dye is created equally. The stylists will talk about the different colorings, permanent and washable, and what these colorings can do to a persons hair. They will also talk about how to care for colored hair and how long a dye job should last.

Wigs extensions are a topic a lot of ladies especially want more information about. Among the questions the blog will answer are:

How long will an extension stay in

How heavy is an extension

What kind of material are wigs and extensions made from?

Which is better, man made or natural hair?

The stylists will also spend a good bit of time talking about specialty services like bridal styling. They reason that special events require more attention to hair.

Special events need special hair styles. This is the kid of style that make take more than amour to put together, but since it is for something that doesnt happen very often, the wait is worth the look.

The shop also has customers who come in periodically to donate their hair to the Locks of Love program. Donations under this program are given to wig makers who make wigs, especially for children, who have lost their hair usually to cancer treatments. Because of the treatments the children are taking, they cannot wear a wig of man made materials.

Marble Media LLCs Nutrition-Centric Blog EatingRightToday.com Discusses the Importance of Iron in Endurance Training and Workout Regimens

Fort Lee, New Jersey (PRWEB) April 15, 2013

The latest blog from EatingRightToday.com titled Plenty of Iron in Your Diet, guest blogger Paisley Livingston discusses the worlds most common nutritional disorder iron deficiency and the importance of iron in the diets of endurance training athletes. Despite the fact that iron is one of the most abundant metals on earth, many humans are operating with an iron deficiency.

According to Livingston, the function of iron in the athletes body is no different than its function in all humans iron converts blood sugar to energy. Athletes in particular rely on metabolic energy to sustain them through a training session or workout, making adequate iron stores a critical element to their success. Iron is necessary to producing red blood cells, and it helps oxygen travel to every cell in the body while escorting carbon dioxide out. Iron is also essential to the health of the bodys immune system.

The body sheds iron through sweating, urination and bleeding. Replenishing iron through dietary sources is the ideal way to maintain adequate iron levels. Foods rich in iron include red meats, dark leafy green vegetables like romaine lettuce, spinach and collard greens, dried fruits, soybeans, lentils and kidney beans. Additional sources of dietary iron include egg yolks, mullosks and liver, so it isnt all that difficult to include iron in a daily diet, Livingston says.

Iron supplements are not a substitute for dietary iron, Livingston says. In fact, unless a physician prescribes iron supplements, they are not a good substitute for eating iron-rich foods.

You need a legitimate medical reason to take iron supplements, since there is no evidence of their benefit if you are not iron deficient, Livingston says. In fact, unless a person tests positive for iron deficiency, iron supplements can actually carry more risks than benefits.

Athletes in particular should be hyper vigilant when it comes to eating iron-rich foods. Iron depletion symptoms can include loss of endurance, chronic fatigue, high exercise heart rate, low power, frequent injury, recurring illness, loss of interest in exercise and irritability. Additional symptoms can include decreased appetite and increased incidence and duration of colds and infections. The only sure diagnosis for an iron deficiency is attainable through a blood test. Anyone experiencing symptoms of iron deficiency should ask their physician for a blood test.

Marble Media LLCs JuicerHead.com Blog Cautions Against Juicing Diets for a Long-term Weight Loss Program

Fort Lee, NJ (PRWEB) April 17, 2013

Citing recently released studies on the long-term results of all-juice fasting for weight loss, Juicerhead.com guest blogger Ashley Stine encourages readers not to depend on an all-juice fast for weight loss. In her newly posted blog titled "The Juicerhead Diet," Stine says that juice alone cant provide the body with all the vitamins, nutrients and minerals it needs to stay healthy.

You can use a juice fast to lose weight quickly and detoxify your body, but for medical reasons you will eventually need to switch back to solid foods, Stine says. Once you make that switch back to a diet that includes solids, theres a high risk of regaining the weight you lost.

Stine says that Juicerhead staffers believe wholeheartedly in juicing, but insists that consuming solid foods in addition to the juice is the only healthy long-term diet solution.

We understand that a short-term juice diet will lead to rapid weight loss at first, Stine says. But sticking to a diet that incorporates the right balance of healthy foods and juices is a joint juice/healthy eating diet that you can stick with for life if you choose to.

Stine offers the following tips for juicers:

Start the day with a breakfast juice, since the nutrients in juice are absorbed more quickly when the stomach is empty.

At lunch, juice dieters can opt to have a nice steak if the mood strikes, or a large vegetable-based juice. Alternatively, dieters can combine a small juice with a healthy meal that consists of low fat, low carb, fiber-rich foods. For those dieters who are really pushing the envelope to see results, Stine recommends alternating between a day of all juice, and a day combining juice and solid foods.

Stine says that dieters who have only consumed juice at breakfast and lunch should stick with healthy, lean protein solid foods like chicken, lamb or beef at dinner paired with a cup of steamed vegetables or a salad. Instead of the veggies or salad, dieters can opt for a vegetable-based juice 30 minutes prior to dinner, which allows enough time for the body to absorb the juices nutrients before eating the meal.

Snacks between meals should consist of unstrained juices, as the pulp helps add to the sensation of being full. Stine encourages chewing the juice pulp, which produces more saliva, which in turn helps trick the brain into thinking it has been fed.

In the blog, Stine offers some favorite juice choices for taste and nutritional value.

The JuicerHead.com site is a great tool for experienced juicers and juicing newbies alike to find recipes and learn more about juicing. For more information visit the JuicerHead.com website, or email info(at)JuicerHead(dot)com.
