In an article last month in the New York Times, its suggested that the bacteria found in a persons gut can actually determine if he or she will lose or gain weight. This research is linked to gastric bypass surgery, which removes part of the stomach, shrinking it, and rearranging parts of the intestines, which helps to shift the balance of bacteria in the digestive tract.
Those who have had such a surgery have lost approximately 65 to 75 percent of their body weight. Despite the positive physical reaction to gastric bypass, scientists have yet to understand why. More research into the matter has brought up the theory that bacterial changes within the body after the surgery might account for as much as 20 percent of the weight loss.
If this idea proves true, this could mean that scientists and doctors could help people lose weight without the need for surgery. This came from Dr. Lee M. Kaplan, who is the director of the obesity, metabolism and nutrition institute at the Massachusetts General Hospital. The findings of this recent research means that its possible that non-invasive treatments could help adjust the microbe level (or microbiota) in the gut.
There is a need for other therapies, Dr. Kaplan said. In no way is manipulating the microbiota going to mimic all the myriad effects of gastric bypass. But if this could produce 20 percent of the effects of surgery, it will still be valuable.
There are much less invasive and expensive ways to lose weight than gastric bypass, like using diet pills and supplements, such as Liproxenol.
