The University of San Francisco (USF) School of Management is proud to announce Kathys Chinese California Cuisine and Kel-Toy, Inc. are the recipients of its 2013 Gellert Family Business Award. The annual award recognizes extraordinary business achievement and community service, and is made possible by a generous gift from The Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation. Kathys Chinese California Cuisine and Kel-Toy, Inc. will be honored during a formal awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 22 from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m. in the Handlery Dining Room on USFs Lone Mountain campus (2800 Turk Blvd., San Francisco 94117).
Kathys Chinese California Cuisine and Kel-Toy, Inc. are deserving recipients of this award, said Michael J. Webber, dean of the USF School of Management. While in vastly different areas of business, both organizations began with the focus on serving a need in their communities. We are honoring Kathys for its continuous support of youth sports, and for offering diners more healthful options in Chinese cuisine. Kel-Toy, Inc. is being recognized for its long history of working with San Francisco schools and supporting the Asian American Foundation to enhance the lives of Asian Americans here in San Francisco.
We are delighted to shine a spotlight on these Gellert Family Business Awardees of 2013, said Monika Hudson, assistant professor and director of the Gellert Family Business Resource Center at USF. With this unique award, we acknowledge successful family businesses, while also providing professional and academic resources to support their continued efforts to thrive in San Francisco.
Since opening its doors in 1992, Kathys Chinese California Cuisine has revolutionized traditional Chinese dishes by providing healthy options for customers. Each dish is prepared using no fat, skin, bones or preservatives and is cooked with only canola oil. In these ways, Kathys puts its own unique spin on traditional Chinese cuisine, resulting in food that has only a fraction of the calories. In addition being a neighborhood favorite, Kathys has been a strong proponent of youth sports, advocating for healthy activities for young people.
Kel-Toy, Inc. has established itself as San Franciscos one-stop shopping resource for gift, floral, craft, packaging, and wedding-favor wholesale market needs since 1981. Beyond providing customers with items such as ribbons, candles, plush toys, fabric displays, plastic boxes, and table runners, Kel-Toy, Inc. is a model of corporate social responsibility with a long history of working with San Francisco schools to assist in underwriting a portion of their operating costs, as well as supporting the Asian American Foundation to enhance the lives of others throughout the City.
