Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month: Skin Check-ups and Laser Technology Team Up in the Fight Against Skin Cancer

New York, New York (PRWEB) April 16, 2013

One in five Americans will develop a type of skin cancer at some point in life; annual indoor tanning increases that chance by 20 percent. There are several different types of skin cancer, each with its own unique characteristics. Skin cancers include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and the most serious form, melanoma. Melanoma is both serious and difficult to treat, especially in later stages. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it is important to check for skin cancer at least once a year with full body check by a knowledgeable dermatologist. It is also recommended that suncreen with SPF 30 or higher be worn as a first line of defense.

Precancerous cells, such as actinic keratosis are the first indicators of danger. It is a scaly lesion most commonly found on the face and back of the hands of those with fair skin, which can be treated using a laser technology called Fraxel Re:store Dual. The Fraxel Re:store Dual laser is a non-invasive resurfacing system used to treat wrinkles, loose skin, sun damage, and is FDA-approved to treat precancerous lesions before they become life threatening. The Fraxel laser treats the skin by fractionally treating microscopic sections of the skin at a time, while stimulating the skins natural repair system to replace damaged cells with healthier tissue. This leaves behind a newer, tighter and cancer-free layer of skin.

Fraxel has become an extremely useful preemptive measure in the fight against skin cancer, by catching and destroying precancerous cells before they worsen. Dr. Rokhsar was the first physician to introduce Fraxel Laser technology to the United States and medical community after working with a prototype for over a year, giving him unparalleled experience.

The Fraxel Dual laser is successful in replacing precancerous cells with healthy ones, Dr. Rokhsar says. After working with the Fraxel laser so extensively, it has proven effective in treating cells that could potentially turn cancerous if not treated, making it an important tool against skin cancer.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) utilizes alpha lipoic acid (ALA), a substance that enhances the absorption of laser or blue light into the skin, thereby destroying precancerous cells, improving skin tone and erasing sun damage. There are other precancerous lesions that patients should also be aware of besides actinic keratosis. Dysplastic nevi syndrome is a marker for patients that may develop melanoma later on. Early detection and treatment through regular checkups for skin cancer with a board-certified dermatologist, is vital for the cure of skin cancer, and if caught early virtually all types of skin cancer are curable.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer in the United States, it also grows slowly and rarely metastasizes (spreads to other areas of the body). However, if left untreated, basal cell will continue to grow, invade and destroy the surrounding skin and tissues beneath the skin. The major cause of developing basal cell carcinoma is overexposure to ultraviolet light; from either the outdoors natural light of the sun or from indoor tanning beds.

While it is important for people to be able to recognize a basal cell carcinoma growth at home, it should still be examined and confirmed by a dermatologist because it is often mistaken for other skin conditions such as acne, cysts, eczema or psoriasis. It appears as a pink or pearly white lesion or sore that can easily bleed, crust over or heal poorly. They are characterized as dome or nodule shapes, flat growths, or scar-like lesions.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer in the United States. The most common cause of squamous cell carcinoma is also the overexposure to ultraviolet light from the sun or tanning beds. It can develop anywhere along the body, although the most prevalently exposed areas, such as the head, neck, hands, shoulders, and lower legs, are the most common. Squamous cell carcinoma lesions appear as hard, superficial, dark red growths that become dome-shaped as they get larger and can sometimes look like dry skin patches.

The most infamously dangerous type of skin cancer is melanoma, which accounts for more than 9 to 12-thousand skin cancer deaths each year and can appear on any area of the body. In the United States, it is the 5th most common cancer in men, and the 7th most common cancer in women. Melanoma typically resembles a mole; however if the pigmentation of the area is not uniform or if the diameter is greater than 6 millimeters, it should be examined by a dermatologist. Surgery for melanoma can be effective only if the melanoma is caught early.

Treating basal and squamous cell carcinoma depend on many factors including the type, location and age of the growth. One method is cryotherapy, which involves killing the cancerous cells by freezing them with liquid nitrogen. However, it is most effectively treated by the MOHS Micrographic surgery procedure. The lesion is removed and examined under a microscope to ensure complete removal of the cancerous cells. Because the skin is removed in careful layers, the technique salvages as much healthy skin as possible. The MOHS Micrographic surgery is especially useful in areas of cosmetic concern, such as the face. Regular checkups should follow afterwards to guarantee minimalistic scarring and healthy healing process. Physicians who can perform MOHS surgery, such as Dr. Rokhsar, must be specially licensed with one additional year of training.

Dr. Cameron K. Rokhsar, M.D., is the leading authority in laser surgery and non-invasive techniques and has trained more physicians on the use of the Fraxel laser in the United States and internationally than any other physician. He is also a MOHS Micrographic trained surgeon with years of experience in the procedure. A graduate of Harvard and New York University, Dr. Rokhsar is a fellowship-trained dermatologist and laser surgeon and extensively published medical author and Professor of Dermatology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His offices are located in New York City and Garden City, Long Island.

Paula Begoun and The Paula's Choice Research Team Have Four Easy Ways Women Can Update Their Look in 2013

Seattle, Washington (PRWEB) December 27, 2012

The beginning of the New Year is an exciting time for setting personal goals, whether its weight loss, financial targets, or volunteering more around the community. No matter what the New Years resolution may be, when a woman feels good about their appearance, it helps them put their best foot forward. Here are four easy, but truly effective, ways women can update their look and be more confident in 2013.

1. Play Up Lashes

Sometimes there isn't enough time to apply a perfectly blended set of eyeshadows in the morning. Instead, focus on emphasizing lashes with a great mascara and sweep a thin or smudged liner across the lids for a sophisticated, beautiful look.

This classic look is universally flattering and a chic way to emphasize the eyes in no time flat. To take it a step further, groom and enhance the brows following this step-by-step guide.

How to pull it off: Paulas Choice Illicit Lash Maximum Impact Mascara ($ 10.95), Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum ($ 10.95), and Paula's Choice Browlistic Long-Wearing Precision Brow Color ($ 9.95).

2. Add a Touch of Radiance to The Complexion

Adding an illuminating effect to the face creates a healthy, warm glow and more youthful appearance. Highlight features such as the cheekbones, inner corner of the eyes, bridge of the nose or brow bone by applying a small amount of illuminator and gently sweeping it out to blend in with the rest of the skin, making sure there are no harsh edges.

Beware: Too much shine can make skin look greasy, and products with overt sparkle or glitter look more tacky than classy.

Fail-proof skin illuminators: Avon Mark Get Bright Hook Up Highlighter ($ 6), Paulas Choice RESIST Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer with SPF 25 & Antioxidants ($ 24.95), or Yves Saint Laurent Teint Parfait Complexion Enhancer ($ 42).

3. Experiment with Lip Color

Consider breaking out of the comfort zone and adding a pop of color to the lips. This is one of the simplest ways to transform a look and it doesnt add any extra time to a makeup routine.

In a rut with pale pinks and nudes? See what a raspberry shade can do. Tired of the same classic red? Experiment with a coral or pinkish mauve color. Not every lipstick color under the rainbow is going to be suitablethe key is to try several and see what works.

Lip color collections with gorgeous shade options: Paulas Choice Perfect Shine Hydrating Lip Gloss ($ 9.95), Giorgio Armani Rouge DArmani Lipstick ($ 30), and Mary Kay Creme Lipstick ($ 13).

4. Schedule a Professional Hair Consultation

Most salons offer a free hair consultation prior to scheduling an appointment, which is a great way to find out what the pros think, without the pressure of doing it right then and there. Well-trained stylists take several factors into consideration, such as face shape, eye color, skin tone, the way your hair parts, personal skill level when it comes to styling, and so on. Its perfectly fine to think about it for a couple days before booking an appointment. Click here for more hair-care advice.

Beauty Expert Paula Begoun and the Paula's Choice Research Team Share Tips on How Women Can Give Their Skin More Antioxidants for a Youthful Glow

Seattle, Washington (PRWEB) December 28, 2012

Antioxidants are an absolute must for radiant, smooth, younger looking skin. Whether part of a well balanced diet or applied topically, antioxidants can help the complexion. Internationally known beauty expert Paula Begoun and her Paulas Choice Research Team share tips on how women can give their skin more antioxidantswithout spending a lot of money.

A key tip: Dont focus on one miracle antioxidant touted by a cosmetics company. There are so many great antioxidants, and when used in combination they help skin look and act younger, while also repairing damage. Just like a diet, eating one food with antioxidants, like grapes or spinach, wont keep the body healthy and young. Likewise for skin care, when women get caught up in the search for the best antioxidants, it almost certainly guarantees they wont end up using the best products. With this in mind, here are five easy ways to add more antioxidants to any skin-care routine:

Salon Success Academy Honors Ms. Susan with Relay for Life Team

Upland, CA (PRWEB) May 06, 2013

Susan Turner was well known around Salon Success Academy for her selflessness; for doing whatever it took to insure the students were happy and finishing their education. She devoted her life to Salon Success Academy before she passed away in 2012. Now the students and staff at the school are trying to raise as much money as possible for the Cut out Cancer with Salon Success Academy Relay for Life team in honor of their beloved Ms. Susan.

Susan was instrumental in creating the schools first Relay for Life team in 2009. Heather Kilgore, who was a cosmetology student at the Upland campus at the time, approached Susan about getting the school to support her familys relay team. Susan helped the Salon Success Academy Student Ambassadors organize fundraisers to raise money and attended every team meeting. That year the Fight Cancer with Jeff Relay for Life team raised the most money they have ever raised.

When I was in school, I was struggling with food for my family. Ms. Susan would check on me every day to make sure I had something to eat. If I didnt, she would buy me lunch. She bent over backwards for me. She had a big, open heart and really cared about her students, Heather said.

It was a similar story with Ryan Ledbetter and his wife, who met each other when they were students together at Salon Success Academy. Ryan suffered from ADHD, so while he was excelling at the cosmetology material, he would become restless in class and often times get into trouble. Ms. Susan fought hard to keep Ryan in school, putting him to work in the corporate office to keep him busy. He began helping Ms. Susan with school tours and new student orientations, something that would later lead to the creation of the schools Student Ambassador Program.

She was someone I could always talk to. She always knew the right thing to say to me, Ryan said. Ms. Susan was a big part of everything I love about my life. If I didnt know her, I wouldnt have my wife, my child, or my career.

Susan was always passionate about cosmetology and education. She enrolled in a cosmetology Regional Occupational Program (ROP) in high school and continued on to cosmetology school after graduation. Once she got her license, she began working behind the chair at a local salon and as a cosmetology instructor for Marinello School of Beauty. In 1988, Susan obtained her teaching credentials from UCLA and started working for Salon Success Academy. She was quickly promoted to director of the Rancho Cucamonga campus before being appointed Director of Operations for the corporate office.

Susans two sisters, Christina and April, also work in the Salon Success Academy corporate office. The women said working together was never a problem; the experience actually brought them closer together. They had a deep respect for their sister and boss and always tried to follow her example. Although, they admit getting her to stop working and relax could sometimes be a struggle. Susan took a long awaited vacation in 2010 when the family took a cruise to Mexico. Christina and April said trying to get their sister on to a boat without phone and Internet access was comical.

Salon Success Academy was more than just work to us. It was a huge part of our lives. Everything we did, we did together. Shes left a big hole in our lives that no one can fill, Christina Belcher said.

When they werent at work, the sisters would travel to Arizona to visit their parents, where they would spend time boating on the Colorado River and going to the casino. Susans family was very important to her, especially her nieces and nephews. She made it a point to make sure each one of them got their own Aunt Susie time. Her sisters said she was her happiest when she was styling her clients hair and working with the students. The feeling was mutual; her students and clients absolutely adored her.

Susan had this way of making everyone around her feel special. She was the most giving person on the planet. It didnt matter if you were a stranger. If you needed something, she would give it to you out of her pocket, April said.

Last year, Susan was unable to attend the Relay for Life in Rancho Cucamonga because she was suffering from intense back pain. However, she still helped organize the students fundraising efforts from home. The day of the event, she called her sisters every hour to get an update on the amount of money the team raised. Susan later learned that her back pain was actually uterine cancer. She passed away just a few weeks later on June 21, 2012.

Susan dedicated her life to Salon Success Academy. There was nothing that made her happier than helping the students. She was the person who shaped this school into the people helping company that it is today. We were lucky to have her and we want to do everything possible to honor her memory, Salon Success Academy owner Bob Gross said.

The Cut out Cancer with Salon Success Academy Relay for Life team is trying to raise $ 5,000 this year in Susan Turners honor. Bob Gross has pledged that the school will match the amount of money the team raises. If you would like to donate to the Cut out Cancer with Salon Success Academy Relay for Life team, you can do so on the teams website.

The Relay for Life is a day-long event at Guasti Regional Park in Rancho Cucamonga on June 1, 2013. All of the money raised goes to the American Cancer Society to provide funding for cancer research and cancer treatment.

There is overwhelming scientific evidence demonstrating that those of us who eat a diet rich in antioxidants and take antioxidant supplements will live longer, healthier lives. When it comes to aging, setting the clock back a few years may have more to do with consuming an antioxidant-rich diet than using any kind of skin cream to eliminate wrinkles.
