San Clemente, CA Periodontist, Dr. Allen J. Schultz Improves Oral Health by Removing Gum Disease with Laser Surgery Before Placing Dental Implants

San Clemente, CA (PRWEB) June 07, 2013

Periodontist Dr. Allen Schultz now offers the use of a new laser gum disease treatment to improve a patients readiness for receiving dental implants. Patients have higher success with their implants when gum disease is removed, and now there is a less invasive gum surgery available that can remove diseased tissue while promoting healing.

Traditional treatments for gum disease involved general anesthetics, scalpels and long recovery periods. These methods also resulted in the loss of a large amount of healthy tissue as well as the removal of diseased gum tissue. Often the amount of gum that was removed would eliminate the option for a patient to receive an implant as there would not be sufficient tissue left to fully support the implant.

With todays new Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) technique, Dr. Schultz can treat only the diseased gum tissue, leaving all healthy tissue untouched, thereby retaining the maximum amount of tissue for improved oral health. This also allows for sufficient tissue to remain in order to support the placement of dental implants.

Aside from gum disease, a patient may often not be eligible for implants because they lack sufficient bone density in the jaw. In addition to being an effective gum disease treatment, LANAP actually stimulates the growth of new bone in the jaw, thereby creating a strong base for an implant. With the right amount of healthy soft gum tissue and strong bone, a periodontist can be assured of success in placing a dental implant.

Patients that require some treatment for a missing tooth or teeth typically choose between implants, bridges or dentures. All options have their advantages but only dental implants can provide the lifelong advantages of jawbone structure preservation as well as a lowered risk or need of repeated surgeries, as is common with bridges or dentures. With both bridges and dentures, there is nothing left in the actual jawbone to maintain overall structure and integrity so the bone actually degrades over time. This leads to a misshapen look and even sagging of the facial muscles and skin, giving an aged appearance. With successful gum disease treatment, patients can opt for implants to not only fill holes left by missing teeth but to prevent these future problems as well.
