CDPHP Urges Prevention, Detection and Treatment of Lyme Disease

Albany, NY (PRWEB) April 25, 2013

With warmer weather on the way, CDPHP is reminding people about the prevention, detection and treatment of Lyme disease. The disease is spread through the bite of an infected backlegged tick (or deer tick), which have becoming increasingly prevalent throughout New York state.

Just as hand hygiene is important to prevent the spread of flu during winter months, its critical that local residents take steps to protect themselves against Lyme disease in spring, summer, and fall, said Dr. Elizabeth Whalen, medical director, CDPHP. If you think youve been bitten by a deer tick, know the signs of Lyme disease and see your primary care doctor if you develop any of these symptoms, added Whalen.

Prevention: The best way to protect you and your family from getting Lyme disease is by reducing your exposure to deer ticks.

Allegheny General Hospital Cardiovascular Institute Becomes Exclusive Pittsburgh Site for Study of Novel Coronary Artery Disease Device

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) May 20, 2013

Interventional cardiologist Tony Farah, MD, and his colleagues at the Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) Cardiovascular Institute have helped pioneer many breakthroughs in the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD) over the past three decades, from new disease-fighting medications to life-saving procedures such as balloon angioplasty and coronary artery stent implantation.

Today, AGH officials announced that the hospital will once again play a prominent role in the study of a novel, first-of-its kind investigational device for CAD that many believe could be the next revolution in the treatment of a disease that strikes more than one million people annually in the United States, claims nearly 500,000 lives each year and is the leading cause of death for both men and women.

Under Dr. Farahs direction, AGH has been selected to join the ABSORB III clinical trial, a multi-center international study exploring a unique bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS), a small mesh tube that is designed to open a blocked artery and then fully dissolve over time, leaving the vessel free of a permanent metallic implant.

The FDA-approved study of the drug-eluting AbsorbTM BVS, made by healthcare company Abbott, is expected to enroll approximately 2,250 patients over the next 12 months, up to 200 of who could enter the trial at AGH.

Across every discipline in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, physicians at Allegheny General Hospital continue to set new standards of patient care through pioneering research and clinical ingenuity. The ABSORB study is just the latest example of the innovation that has been a hallmark of our cardiovascular program, said Dr. Farah, the hospitals principal investigator in the ABSORB III clinical trial.

Coronary artery disease is a condition in which one or more arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrowed, putting patients at risk of a heart attack and cardiac death. Similar to conventional metallic stents, the Absorb device is designed to open a blocked heart vessel and restore blood flow to the heart.

Unlike metallic stents, however, which are permanently implanted into the blood vessel, Abbotts Absorb is a uniquely engineered, temporary scaffold that provides support to the vessel until the artery can stay open on its own. Made of polylactide, a naturally dissolvable material that is commonly used in medical implants (such as dissolving sutures), the device dissolves into the blood vessel after its work has been done.

According to Dr. Farah, the potential advantages of a bioresorbable scaffold device are significant when it comes to the long-term management of CAD patients.

With the standardization of balloon angioplasty and stent implantation and the vast experience that we have accumulated in the use of these techniques, it has become apparent that the most effective and safe means of restoring natural blood vessel function in the setting of coronary disease is ultimately a treatment that leaves nothing behind in the vessel which was the original idea of angioplasty. The Absorb device moves us in the direction of that goal, Dr. Farah said.

Balloon angioplasty is a procedure in which a balloon tipped catheter is used to open an area of arterial blockage. The catheter is delivered into the artery through the skin via a small incision in the groin or arm.

Deployed in a similar fashion, stents evolved to help prevent a complication of angioplasty in which the previously opened lesion in the artery gradually re-narrows from continuing plaque build-up a condition called restenosis. To further improve stent performance, the technology was more recently advanced to include drug-eluting devices coated with medications designed to further inhibit the growth of plaque at the treatment site.

For all their effectiveness at improving the outcomes of many patients with CAD, the risks of conventional, permanently placed stents are not insignificant, Dr. Farah said.

Patients receiving stents typically require prolonged use of blood thinning medications to prevent blood clots from forming within the device, which may cause sudden heart attacks. Stented lesions are also still prone to restenosis, particularly among one of the largest subsets of patients at risk for CAD diabetics.

And for patients with advanced coronary disease, the presence of stents in multiple vessels has the potential to limit future heart surgery options, if needed.

Because of these concerns, there has always been a desire to find a better way to accomplish the pivotal short term function of stents, without the long-term complications, Dr. Farah said.

International studies to date of the Absorb device have been extremely encouraging and the start of the ABSORB III U.S. clinical trial follows the recent commercial launch of Absorb in Europe and parts of Latin America, Asia and India.

Absorb III is a prospective, randomized study that will compare Abbotts drug-eluting Absorb BVS devise to the companys XIENCETM family of drug eluting metallic stents. Both devices deliver everolimus, an anti-proliferative drug that has been shown to inhibit in-stent plaque growth in coronary vessels.

The primary endpoint of the trial is target lesion failure, a combined measure of safety and efficacy, at one year. In addition, a subset of patients within the trial will be evaluated for novel endpoints such as vasomotion, a measure of how much natural motion returns to the vessel as Absorb dissolves into the arterial tissue.

Dr. Farah said many patients with CAD who are good candidates for stent placement will be eligible for enrollment in the study. Those with questions about the clinical trial can contact Joe Carothers at 412-359-4156.

Stem Cells from Fat Outperform Those from Bone Marrow in Fighting Disease

Durham, NC (PRWEB) May 21, 2013

A new study appearing in the current issue of STEM CELLS Translational Medicine indicates that stem cells harvested from fat (adipose) are more potent than those collected from bone marrow in helping to modulate the bodys immune system.

The finding could have significant implications in developing new stem-cell-based therapies, as adipose tissue-derived stem cells (AT-SCs) are far more plentiful in the body than those found in bone marrow and can be collected from waste material from liposuction procedures. Stem cells are considered potential therapies for a range of conditions, from enhancing skin graft survival to treating inflammatory bowel disease.

Researchers at the Leiden University Medical Centers Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion in Leiden, The Netherlands, led by Helene Roelofs, Ph.D., conducted the study. They were seeking an alternative to bone marrow for stem cell therapies because of the low number of stem cells available in marrow and also because harvesting them involves an invasive procedure.

Adipose tissue is an interesting alternative since it contains approximately a 500-fold higher frequency of stem cells and tissue collection is simple, Dr. Roelofs said.

Moreover, Dr. Melief added, 400,000 liposuctions a year are performed in the U.S. alone, where the aspirated adipose tissue is regarded as waste and could be collected without any additional burden or risk for the donor.

For the study, the team used stem cells collected from the bone marrow and fat tissue of age-matched donors. They compared the cells ability to regulate the immune system in vitro and found that the two performed similarly, although it took a smaller dose for the AT-SCs to achieve the same effect on the immune cells.

When it came to secreting cytokines the cell signaling molecules that regulate the immune system the AT-SCs also outperformed the bone marrow-derived cells.

This all adds up to make AT-SC a good alternative to bone marrow stem cells for developing new therapies, Dr. Roelofs concluded.

Cells from bone marrow and from fat were equivalent in terms of their potential to differentiate into multiple cell types, said Anthony Atala, M.D., editor of STEM CELLS Translational Medicine and director of Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The fact that the cells from fat tissue seem to be more potent at suppressing the immune system suggest their promise in clinical therapies.

San Clemente, CA Periodontist, Dr. Allen J. Schultz Improves Oral Health by Removing Gum Disease with Laser Surgery Before Placing Dental Implants

San Clemente, CA (PRWEB) June 07, 2013

Periodontist Dr. Allen Schultz now offers the use of a new laser gum disease treatment to improve a patients readiness for receiving dental implants. Patients have higher success with their implants when gum disease is removed, and now there is a less invasive gum surgery available that can remove diseased tissue while promoting healing.

Traditional treatments for gum disease involved general anesthetics, scalpels and long recovery periods. These methods also resulted in the loss of a large amount of healthy tissue as well as the removal of diseased gum tissue. Often the amount of gum that was removed would eliminate the option for a patient to receive an implant as there would not be sufficient tissue left to fully support the implant.

With todays new Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) technique, Dr. Schultz can treat only the diseased gum tissue, leaving all healthy tissue untouched, thereby retaining the maximum amount of tissue for improved oral health. This also allows for sufficient tissue to remain in order to support the placement of dental implants.

Aside from gum disease, a patient may often not be eligible for implants because they lack sufficient bone density in the jaw. In addition to being an effective gum disease treatment, LANAP actually stimulates the growth of new bone in the jaw, thereby creating a strong base for an implant. With the right amount of healthy soft gum tissue and strong bone, a periodontist can be assured of success in placing a dental implant.

Patients that require some treatment for a missing tooth or teeth typically choose between implants, bridges or dentures. All options have their advantages but only dental implants can provide the lifelong advantages of jawbone structure preservation as well as a lowered risk or need of repeated surgeries, as is common with bridges or dentures. With both bridges and dentures, there is nothing left in the actual jawbone to maintain overall structure and integrity so the bone actually degrades over time. This leads to a misshapen look and even sagging of the facial muscles and skin, giving an aged appearance. With successful gum disease treatment, patients can opt for implants to not only fill holes left by missing teeth but to prevent these future problems as well.

For more information about the benefits of laser gum disease treatment and dental implants, visit Dr. Schultzs website and call today.

La Peer Colorectal Surgeons Now Using Cutting-Edge Pilonidal Disease Treatment

Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) June 13, 2013

Often described as a painful bump over the tailbone or between the buttocks, pilonidal disease is an abnormal skin pit that afflicts an estimated 0.7 percent of the general population. In its simplest form, pilonidal disease is asymptomatic and may not require treatment beyond maintenance of personal hygiene. When infected, a pilonidal cyst can become quite painful and may require surgery as the only definitive therapy.

For years, surgical treatment of pilonidal disease has involved removal of hair and other debris from the infected tissue. During the traditional procedure, the affected tissue was removed down to the sacral bone. The surrounding tissue would then be re-approximated for a simple closure. Unfortunately, due to tension on the tissue in this region, wound failure rates approximating 50% have been reported. Given this high rate of failure, most surgeons have adopted the open wound technique of treatment, which while mitigating the rate of wound breakdown (since the wound is left open from the get go), leaves a wound that will slowly heal over the course of several months.

At the La Peer Department of Colorectal Surgery, however, physicians are using an innovative method known as a rhomboid flap to enhance surgical outcomes.

The rhomboid flap is a clever technique that takes advantage of geometry, to reduce the tension on the wound, which minimizes the risks of wound breakdown and recurrence of disease, said Dr. Allen Kamrava, a La Peer colorectal surgeon. When surgery is necessary, the rhomboid flap approach provides patients the greatest chance of both curing the disease and maximizing post-operative comfort.

Treatment for a pilonidal cyst depends on severity of discomfort and progression of the infection. In the acute setting, a simple incision and drainage is performed to remove infection. Once the active inflammation has subsided, however, surgical removal of the entire segment of diseased tissue is the only way to minimize the risk or recurrence.

During the outpatient surgical procedure, a rhomboid-shaped skin flap is created and the infected tissue around the pilonidal cyst is removed. In several peer-reviewed studies, the rhomboid flap method has demonstrated the lowest reported wound failure rates and recurrence rates.

According to Gary H. Hoffman, MD, a board-certified colorectal surgeon at La Peer Health Systems, the condition is most common in post-pubertal young adults. Factors that may increase the risk of disease include poor personal hygiene, obesity, and local trauma.

Early evaluation of a pilonidal cyst is crucial to limiting disease progression and reducing the risk of recurrence, said Dr. Hoffman. If an infection does occur, individuals should know that with the proper care from an experienced surgeon, the condition is highly curable.

In the last year, 26 of La Peer's surgeons were reviewed by peers and given the Patient's Choice Award. The Patients' Choice honor is given to doctors who provide incredible service to their patients. In 2012 alone, more than 200,000 patients across America provided reviews and feedback regarding their personal treatment and experiences with doctors. The Patients' Choice award is given to doctors who receive rave reviews for their work and dedication in their medical field.

Bel Marra Health Reports on One Mans Story: New York Man Says He Has Found a Cure for His Crohns Disease

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) April 05, 2013

Bel Marra Health, who offers high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, is reporting on new research outlining one mans story of how he has cured his Crohns Disease.

As Bel Marra Health reports in its article (http://www.belmarrahealth.com/colon-and-digestive/man-claims-he-has-a-cure-for-crohns-disease/) Ari Meisel who lives in New York, has found a way to manage Crohns disease symptoms without drug therapy and believes that he has been cured of the disease.

His story may be an eye opener into how patients suffering from digestive problems, in particular Crohns disease, can lead a relatively normal life free of stomach and other gastrointestinal problems that are often debilitating and disruptive to normal life.

Crohns disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which usually affects individuals aged 15-35. The intestines are usually affected, but the disease can affect anywhere from the mouth to the anus. The exact cause of Crohns disease is unknown but it is a type of autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks and destroys healthy tissues. This leads to chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, which leads to all of the unpleasant symptoms that accompany the disease.

There are many symptoms of Crohns disease, according to the Mayo Clinic, including: diarrhea, abdominal pain and stomach cramping, bloody stools, ulcers, decreased appetite and weight loss. When Crohns disease is advanced, there may be additional symptoms including: fever, fatigue, inflammation of the eyes, skin disorders, mouth sores, liver and/or bile duct inflammation and delayed growth or sexual development (in children).

As the Bel Marra Health article reads, while the exact cause of Crohns disease is unknown, there are a number of factors that seem to be associated with the disease according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, including: genetics and family history of the disease, environmental factors, smoking and the tendency of the body to over-react to normal bacteria in the intestines.

Ari Meisel was taking 16 pills a day to manage his Crohns disease. However, he also admitted that he was smoking a pack of cigarettes per day and consuming fast food. Meisel reported that he was hospitalized for a bowel obstruction which led to an incredibly bad night in the hospital where he stated that he didnt think he was going to make it through the night. It was because of this experience, that Meisel decided that it was time to make changes to his diet and lifestyle.

It started with quitting smoking and eating a vegan diet for one month back in 2008. Slowly, he added small amounts of dairy back into his diet and became a vegetarian for six months. At this time he also started practicing yoga and started taking part in triathlons as a way to deal with his stress.

Ari Meisels story is a positive one that shows that the symptoms, including digestive problems and stomach issues, can be managed (not cured) with diet and lifestyle changes. However, it is important to remember that Meisel made all of these changes under the supervision of a medical professional.

New Orleans, LA (PRWEB) April 08, 2013

The 245th American Chemical Society National Meeting & Exposition in New Orleans April 7 11th on Chemistry of Energy & Food is sure to be an informative exposition this year. The relationship between chemistry and food has become a trending topic in the minds of many consumers. Label reading is no longer the exception but the norm for the average shopper, and foods and beverages alike are getting more and more recognition for their natural health benefits. One such subject matter that has been widely studied is coffee.

Dr. Joe Vinson from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Scranton, is presenting More than just caffeine Tuesday, April 9, 2013 10:20 AM at the Natural Products for Health and Pharmaceuticals and Biotech forum from 08:00 AM - 11:50 AM in the DoubleTree New Orleans, Room: Madewood A. As evidence for coffee's diabetes and heart disease protection Dr. Vinson will present a new human study demonstrating a dose-response green coffee extracts inhibition of glucose absorption during a glucose tolerance test in normal subjects. Dr. Vinsons presentation will also summarize numerous epidemiological studies indicating that coffee consumption, especially decaffeinated coffee, will reduce the risk of all-cause mortality, heart failure, Type 2 Diabetes and Parkinson's disease. The studies' results are usually J-curves indicating an optimal consumption of 2-4 cups/day. Dr. Vinsons studies of antioxidants in foods and beverages indicate that coffee is the #1 source of polyphenol antioxidants in the U.S. diet and this has been borne out in several European countries.

Dr. Vinson will also discuss a recent study in India with obese subjects which showed a significant weight loss and body fat reduction after consuming capsules containing a green coffee extract which was high in chlorogenic acids. Roasting is known to greatly reduce the levels of these compounds in the beverage coffee.

New Study Results Suggest that Grape Seed Extract, Like that Found in Weight Loss Supplement Prescopodene, May Help Fight Kidney Disease

Australia (PRWEB) April 12, 2013

Eat too much fat and you risk doing some damage to your internal organs because they cannot function as efficiently as they should. However, new research findings suggest that grape seed extract, like that found in the weight loss supplement Prescopodene, may actually help prevent kidney disease or, as an alternative, could be used as a treatment option.

On February 28, 2013, a study was published by Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism citing research conducted on Tunisian rats. The rats were put on diets that were extremely high in fat, causing an increase in triglycerides (TG) that helped lead them to sustain kidney damage.

Then, they were given the human equivalent of 35 grams of grape seed and skin extract (GSSE) along with the fatty diet to see if their bodies responded differently to the fat they consumed. What they found was that there was a partial reversal of the TG deposition as well as the histological damage.

This means that not only did their bodies deal more effectively with the fat, but it also undid some of the damage. Its hopeful then that these same effects would be found in humans that suffer from kidney disease due to diets which are extremely high in fat.

Prescopodene is a combination of several natural ingredients, including grape seed extract, that are known to raise metabolism. Others include green tea and ginger root. It also contains vitamin B6, vitamin C and magnesium which have all been previously labeled as essential to the weight loss process.

hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diets and Weight Loss Plans Announces Prescription hCG Diet Plans to Target Dangerous Excessive Belly Fat, Now Linked to Kidney Disease

Houston, TX (PRWEB) April 16, 2013

According to a new study by the University Medical Center Groningen, eliminating excess belly fat is imperative in kidney disease prevention. The negative health effects stemming from obesity are well-known, but this study out of the Netherlands offers yet another insight into the way that the Diet Doc and the hCG weight loss diet can increase quality of life. The study, conducted by the University Medical Center Groningen, found that excess belly fat has a direct correlation to decreased kidney function and kidney disease, regardless of body mass index (BMI). The data demonstrates central body fat distribution as an independent risk factor for kidney disease and places those with excess belly fat at an elevated risk for kidney damage and chronic kidney disease. Developing an individualized hCG weight loss diet customized to fit each patients lifestyle, Diet Doc can quickly remove excess belly fat and improve the functions of internal organs.

Published online in their before-print, April 11 issue, the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology discusses for the first time how excess belly fat is a key factor in chronic kidney disease. The study focused on a population of non-hypertensive, non-diabetic, healthy people and determined that there is increasing evidence linking body fat distribution with well-established risk factors and kidney disease. Those with excess belly fat, whether overweight or obese, experienced increased blood pressure on the kidneys and a decrease in kidney filtration rate due to built-up fat deposits around the organ. The hCG weight loss diet effectively removes fat buildup from stubborn areas, such as the stomach, and can relieve those factors contributing to improper kidney function and kidney disease.

The hCG hormone was isolated by Endocrinologist A.T.W. Simeons in the 1950s and functions as a potent appetite suppressant. Naturally produced in women during pregnancy, the hCG acts as a protective barrier for a fetus that may not have access to adequate calories and nutrition during gestation. Thus, hCG acts to naturally mobilize fat stores in those looking to lose weight fast. Diet Docs experts have used the research from the 1950s and todays advanced science and technology to create the most advanced, safe version of the hCG weight loss diet. By increasing allowable calories to as many as 1250 daily, the Diet Doc hCG diet offers patients a healthy and effective way to lose belly fat and begin a life free from its hazardous effects on the body.

Following a low-calorie diet alone can lead to weight loss but a large percentage of the weight loss will be muscle or important structural fat, not the bodys hard-to-reach fat storage. Coupling the hCG hormone with a low-calorie diet plan allows the body to remove fat deposits in stubborn areas like the belly. When pressure from unnecessary fat surrounding the internal organs is eliminated, the bodys internal organs can function properly and the risk of kidney disease caused by excess belly fat is relieved.

The hCG weight loss diet is created specifically for each patient considering age, gender, health history and lifestyle. Following a consultation with a doctor, the patient receives medication and a Certificate of Analysis from the United States based, licensed pharmacy showing the purity of each ingredient. The patient also works closely with a Diet Doc Nutritionist and weight loss nurse to make sure results are occurring safely and rapidly. The goal of the hCG weight loss diet is not only rapid results; it is also to develop healthy eating habits and to create a healthy lifestyle.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy Responds to New Study Revealing Behaviour of Patients Who Have Suffered a Stroke or Heart Disease

(PRWEB UK) 25 April 2013

According to The Spec, more than 14 percent of patients fail to adopt any healthy habits after suffering a stroke or with heart disease. Many other patients do not adopt enough of a healthier lifestyle in order to avoid reoccurring illnesses and disease. The study looked at three main health lifestyle choices, avoiding or quitting smoking, consuming a healthy diet and taking regular physical exercise. The findings were made from 154,000 adults across 178 countries with varying incomes over a seven year period. Only 4 percent adopted all three healthy lifestyle choices.

It seems that changing old habits such as stopping smoking, taking regular exercise and adopting a healthy diet are requirements that are difficult to do. Hypnotherapy can be used as a complementary approach to breaking bad habits such as smoking and overeating.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy is one of the most established hypnotherapy directories in the UK, listing qualified and experienced hypnotherapists throughout the British Isles that can help clients with a range of issues including smoking, weight loss and anxiety. hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diets & Weight Loss Plans Announces New hCG Diet Plans Designed to Promote Fast Weight Loss to Lower Risk Of Periodontal Disease

Houston, TX (PRWEB) May 13, 2013

Millions of Americans suffer from periodontal (gum) disease, an infection of the tissues that support the teeth. Because this disease can cause inflammation throughout the body, it also carries a number of other health risks. Gum disease and tooth loss is now considered to predispose numerous health risks, including coronary artery disease, infective endocarditis, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, kidney disease and stroke. Those that suffer from gum disease may harbor up to 500 species of bacteria which can enter small blood vessels, travel to other parts of the body, release toxins, and trigger inflammatory chemicals that assault arteries and organs. A study, published in the Journal of Periodontology, disclosed evidence that a higher body mass index was a significant predictor for gum disease with the prevalence of periodontal disease being 76% higher among young obese individuals aged 1834 than in normal weight individuals.

With obesity fast becoming an American epidemic, losing weight is no longer a mere cosmetic concern, but, more importantly, it is about improving longevity, as well as quality of life by avoiding weight related diseases such as periodontal disease. Diet Doc has combined decades of scientific research with the knowledge and expertise of doctors, nurses and nutritionists, all specializing in the science of healthy and fast weight loss, and have developed Americas leading medically supervised fast weight loss hCG diet plans proven to produce safe and effective weight loss and to help all Americans avoid the risk of countless weight related diseases, including periodontal disease.

Prescription hCG, when used in conjunction with Diet Docs individualized nutrition plans, has the ability to trigger the release of stored fat into the bloodstream, thus burning this trapped fat for energy. Because prescription hCG also naturally suppresses the appetite, as well as prevents muscle loss during dieting, dieters are losing up to one pound per day of unhealthy and unwanted excess fat, typically in the most stubborn areas, such as the belly, underarms, hips and thighs without experiencing hunger or cravings and without strenuous exercise regimens.

Experts agree that losing weight is essential to promoting good health and avoiding a myriad of weight related diseases and conditions, including periodontal disease. Diet Doc has become the nations leader in fast weight loss by medically supervising and monitoring each patient's fast weight loss progress with constant communication. At a fraction of the cost of most diet plans, Diet Docs prescription hCG diet plans fit comfortably into most budgets making losing excess fat and looking forward to a future of improved health, lowering the risk of periodontal disease, affordable to almost everyone.

Dr. Kanani, Woodland Hills Dentist: Links Between Gum Disease, Obesity and Inflammation

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) May 16, 2013

Along with type 2 diabetes and heart disease, obesity can also be a risk factor for gum disease, according to a February 6, 2013 article posted in General Dentistry and in PR Newswire (Being Overweight Linked to Higher Risk of Gum Disease). Inflammation is the culprit, says quoted dentist and author Charlene Krejci. Dr. Kaveh Kanani, a cosmetic dentist in Woodland Hills, says that research like this can be a powerful motivator for both weight loss and dental visits, so that dental implant costs can be avoided.

Excess sitting can lead to both inflammation and extra weight, according to a February 21, 2013 article posted by WebMD (Too Much Sitting Linked to Chronic Health Problems). However, the PR Newswire article goes beyond the dangers of sitting for hours at a time, indicating that the cytokines, or proteins with inflammatory properties, are actually produced relentlessly by the bodies of overweight individuals. Essentially, says Dr. Kanani, this means that there can be unintentional blood flow damage to a person's gums by the double problem of having extra weight that encourages extra sitting.

Nor is weight the worst problem, says the dentist Woodland Hills. Bacteria buildup can lead to a seemingly endless cycle of inflammation and then gum disease, because a certain type of cytokines are produced just by having gum disease. In some ways, it's as if the body sets itself on a course of failure unless drastic measures are taken. Sometimes, once the gums begin to separate from the teeth (or teeth begin to get wobbly), the gaps may make it necessary to incur dental implant cost.

According to a sobering April 12, 2013 article on Diabetes Care (Inflammation Links Obesity and Gum Disease), belly fat itself may be a large problem for those who want to retain their original teeth. Belly fat contains about 50 bioactive substances, which can set off inflammatory responses that reduce the bodys ability to suppress appetite or use insulin to regulate glucose levelsboth of which are linked to diabetes. Fat itself, no matter where it is stored, can increase a protein that has been linked to both inflammation and cardiovascular disease.

Of course, losing weight can improve health overall, but people can fear going to the dentist as much (or more) as they may fear going through another diet and exercise program. Dr. Kanani offers sedation procedures, in which the patient can either be asleep or semi-aware for the dental process, for a monthly special of under $ 400. Dental implants are also available for a reduced rate.

Dr. Kaveh Kanani has a biology degree from California State University, and a doctorate in Dental Surgery from New York University. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry awarded him with an Associate Fellowship, and Dr. Kanani built on his knowledge by taking multiple AAID Maxi courses. After becoming an associate of the Southern California Family Dentistry, and South Bay Dental, he opened his own office in 2001.

During Celiac Awareness Month, Nutrition Expert Keri Glassman Encourages People with Celiac Disease to Find a Fiber Alternative like Konsyl Original Formula

Easton, MD (PRWEB) May 22, 2013

According to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder effecting up to 3 million people in the U.S.(1) Celiac is triggered by gluten, causing damage to the small intestine and mal-absorption of nutrients(2). To protect the small intestine and prevent symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, weight loss and vitamin deficiency, people with celiac disease must abide by a gluten-free diet. While there are many gluten-free foods that celiac sufferers can eat, living with a gluten-free diet often means taking out common sources of fiber like cereal and whole wheat bread. This means those with celiac disease will need to look for other ways to consume adequate amounts of fiber an important part of any well-rounded diet.

People suffering with celiac disease are often very aware of the nutrient makeup and ingredients in the foods theyre eating, and for that reason are very health conscious. Having celiac disease makes it even more important to pay attention to your digestive health including getting adequate fiber on a daily basis, explains Keri Glassman, RD. Supplementing a gluten-free diet with an all-natural, gluten-free psyllium fiber supplement like Konsyl Original Formula is a great way to ensure youre getting the daily fiber thats needed to stay healthy.

According to Glassman, there are numerous health benefits that fiber provides including weight management and promoting digestive health. Additionally, fiber helps protect the heart by lowering blood cholesterol and can help manage blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends 25 grams of fiber per day for women and 38 grams of fiber per day for men in order to experience fibers health benefits.

Memphis, TN (PRWEB) May 27, 2013

As reported by Medical News Today, researchers with Medical Research Council (MRC) Clinical Sciences Centre at Imperial College in London tested the blood flow of over 200 subjects to determine whether weight gain and obesity had a significant effect on the stiffness of arteries that could potentially lead to deadly cardiovascular disease. Their results indicated that, in subjects over the age of 50, increased weight gain was found to cause stiffer arteries, which could lead to cardiovascular disease. Lead researcher, Dr. Declan ORegan told Medical News Today, The effects of having more fat seem to be different depending on your age. It looks like young people may be able to adapt to excess body fat, but by middle age the cumulative exposure to years of obesity may start to cause permanent damage to the arteries. hCG diets were designed to address obesity and weight gain at any stage of life. When developing these diet plans, Diet Doc was intent on helping patients to not only achieve their best weight loss goals, but to also provide the path to leading healthier, happier lives overall.

DietAssist responds to a new study that shows eating sweets regularly doesn't make you more likely to be fat or develop heart disease.

(PRWEB UK) 28 May 2013

Study published in the Nutrition journal supported by The National Confectioners Association found that those who enjoyed sweet treats every other day were not at higher risk of disease.

These new findings are not a signal that it's okay to eat chocolate and sweets in huge quantities. What the study shows is that 'a little of what you fancy' wont make people obese or at risk of a heart attack. The keyword is 'little', a small 100g bar of chocolate contains over 500 calories and 57g sugar.

A study of more than 5,000 Americans found no link between poor health and eating sweets regularly and by regularly they mean some sweets every other day.

Obviously eating a few sweets every other day is not a problem as the study shows. However, for those eating a packet or two a day or perhaps a couple of bars of chocolate a day, it would make sense to reduce this if they want to lose weight.

Paul Howard, co-creator of the DietAssist programme, said "It's plain common sense that a few sweets every other day is not going to be a problem, the same as a small piece of cake a couple of times a week isn't. But to achieve and maintain weight loss there has to be a shift in the desire for these types of food, and of course the more often you eat them, the more you want them.

"People on the DietAssist programme simply find the desire for sweets and chocolate is turned down and therefore much easier to resist. If you don't desire something, as a rule you won't eat it, even if it's offered to you. This in itself is a powerful change for most people and it helps them reduce their calorie intake in a very simple fashion."

The DietAssist programme is the result of over 20 years experience of helping people to lose weight effectively, and uses the latest psychological techniques to avoid the self sabotage and demotivation that dieters commonly experience.

The DietAssist programme helps dieters strengthen their motivation and resolve, and creates the optimum psychological state for success. It is designed to work alongside any weight loss programme or sensible eating plan.
