Great Healthworks, Inc., Makers of Omega XL, Report on New Study

Hollywood, FL (PRWEB) June 03, 2013

A team of scientists from the University of Liverpools Institute for Aging and Chronic Disease analyzed the results of 185 studies, and their review published in the British Journal of Nutrition says Omega-3 fatty acids can prevent and even reverse junk foods damage to the brain. The discovery was a bi-product of the studys original purpose, which was to determine whether omega-3 fatty acids aid in weight loss by stimulating particular processes in the brain.

Decades of research show that eating junk food is harmful for a variety of reasons. Not only can junk food contribute to weight gain and disease, but it can also have negative effects on the brain. Specifically, research has indicated that high-fat diets trigger the production of inflammatory chemicals and triglycerides, which block important hormones from entering the brain after eating. This inflammatory condition also negatively affects molecules that stimulate neurogenesis a process that generates new nerve cells. Existing neurons are left vulnerable to damage, and the process that builds new neurons is suppressed. Over time, this can lead to visible changes in the structure of the brain.

Careful review of existing studies found that omega-3s fatty acids counteract the impact of inflammatory chemicals, and suppress triglyceridesthereby allowing the brain to accept the hormones that tell it to grow while protecting existing nerve cells.

Dr. Lucy Pickavance, one of the reviews authors, says fish oils, "may take the brakes off the detrimental effects of some of the processes triggered in the brain by high-fat dietsand including more oily fish or fish oil supplements in our diets could certainly be a positive step forward for those wanting to improve their general health."
