Dr. Jeffrey M. Kenkel Selected Among Top 1% of Plastic Surgeons by US News & World Report

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) May 08, 2013

Dallas plastic surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey M. Kenkel, has been selected in the latest listing of Top Doctors released by US News and World Report. The annual listing identifies physicians who are considered to be in the top of their medical specialty in the United States.

The Top Doctors list is a collaboration between Castle Connolly and US News and World Report. Inclusion starts by peer nomination process. Each physician can nominate up to 10 doctors in their own specialty and up to 3 additional specialties. The nominations are then reviewed and screened by a physician directed research team.

The recognition is strictly by peer nominations and independent review. No doctor can pay to be included on the list and no hospitals or affiliates can pay to have their physicians included.

Im honored to have been selected as a US News Top Doctor, says Dr. Kenkel. National, peer reviewed recognitions such as Top Doctors can be a useful resource for patients seeking a well qualified plastic surgeon.

In addition to being selected as a Top Doctor, the program has also given Dr. Kenkel a special designation that identifies him as being in the top 1% in his specialty of plastic surgery. Unlike other US News listings, the Top Doctors list is not ranked. However, this special designation shows doctors who stand out, even from other Top Doctors.

I always encourage patients to select their plastic surgeon carefully," explains Dr. Kenkel. "Make sure that your plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and that he or she operates in an accredited facility.

Boston-area Dermatologic Surgeons Donating Laser Treatments for Marathon Bombing Scars

Chestnut Hill, Mass. (PRWEB) April 25, 2013

As Boston recovers from its recent tragic events, the dermatologic surgeons at SkinCare Physicians want to do their part by offering state-of-the-art laser treatment of scars at no charge to anyone injured in the Boston Marathon attack.

Breakthroughs in the last few years have dramatically improved the treatment of scars from burns and traumatic injuries. New technology and techniques developed in Boston have been used nationally in the Wounded Warrior Project to improve the scars of combat veterans.

Lasers can significantly improve or remove both dark color and redness from scars. In addition, new ablative fractional resurfacing lasers combined with other medications have shown dramatic improvement in the texture, flexibility, function and appearance of scarred tissue.

"We have so many new devices and techniques available to improve scars, said Thomas Rohrer, M.D., a senior partner at SkinCare Physicians and Secretary of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), the nations largest organization exclusively representing dermatologic surgeons. Boston Marathon Project Heal is one small way we can help those injured in these tragic events."

It was previously thought that scars should be allowed to mature for a year or more before any intervention. New science presented earlier this month at the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery annual meeting at, of all places, the Hynes Convention Center less than 200 yards from the finish line of the Boston Marathon demonstrated that early treatment of traumatic scars can alter their trajectory and allow more rapid normalization of tissue.

In treating those wounded at the Boston Marathon, the dermatologists at SkinCare Physicians plan to use the latest in pulsed dye and ablative fractional lasers to improve scarring. Wounded veterans have shown life-changing improvement in their scars following this treatment. Many have seen not only cosmetic improvement of their scars but also an increase in flexibility that has allowed them to more freely maneuver digits and limbs. This same strategy can be applied to those injured in the bombings.

"Everyone here in Boston is looking for a way to help. We want those in need to know we are offering them our assistance, said Kenneth Arndt, M.D., President of SkinCare Physicians and also an ASDS member. In this small way, we hope to provide some comfort to those who have been injured and help our community to heal."

La Peer Colorectal Surgeons Now Using Cutting-Edge Pilonidal Disease Treatment

Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) June 13, 2013

Often described as a painful bump over the tailbone or between the buttocks, pilonidal disease is an abnormal skin pit that afflicts an estimated 0.7 percent of the general population. In its simplest form, pilonidal disease is asymptomatic and may not require treatment beyond maintenance of personal hygiene. When infected, a pilonidal cyst can become quite painful and may require surgery as the only definitive therapy.

For years, surgical treatment of pilonidal disease has involved removal of hair and other debris from the infected tissue. During the traditional procedure, the affected tissue was removed down to the sacral bone. The surrounding tissue would then be re-approximated for a simple closure. Unfortunately, due to tension on the tissue in this region, wound failure rates approximating 50% have been reported. Given this high rate of failure, most surgeons have adopted the open wound technique of treatment, which while mitigating the rate of wound breakdown (since the wound is left open from the get go), leaves a wound that will slowly heal over the course of several months.

At the La Peer Department of Colorectal Surgery, however, physicians are using an innovative method known as a rhomboid flap to enhance surgical outcomes.

The rhomboid flap is a clever technique that takes advantage of geometry, to reduce the tension on the wound, which minimizes the risks of wound breakdown and recurrence of disease, said Dr. Allen Kamrava, a La Peer colorectal surgeon. When surgery is necessary, the rhomboid flap approach provides patients the greatest chance of both curing the disease and maximizing post-operative comfort.

Treatment for a pilonidal cyst depends on severity of discomfort and progression of the infection. In the acute setting, a simple incision and drainage is performed to remove infection. Once the active inflammation has subsided, however, surgical removal of the entire segment of diseased tissue is the only way to minimize the risk or recurrence.

During the outpatient surgical procedure, a rhomboid-shaped skin flap is created and the infected tissue around the pilonidal cyst is removed. In several peer-reviewed studies, the rhomboid flap method has demonstrated the lowest reported wound failure rates and recurrence rates.

According to Gary H. Hoffman, MD, a board-certified colorectal surgeon at La Peer Health Systems, the condition is most common in post-pubertal young adults. Factors that may increase the risk of disease include poor personal hygiene, obesity, and local trauma.

Early evaluation of a pilonidal cyst is crucial to limiting disease progression and reducing the risk of recurrence, said Dr. Hoffman. If an infection does occur, individuals should know that with the proper care from an experienced surgeon, the condition is highly curable.

In the last year, 26 of La Peer's surgeons were reviewed by peers and given the Patient's Choice Award. The Patients' Choice honor is given to doctors who provide incredible service to their patients. In 2012 alone, more than 200,000 patients across America provided reviews and feedback regarding their personal treatment and experiences with doctors. The Patients' Choice award is given to doctors who receive rave reviews for their work and dedication in their medical field.
