Women In Government Launches the Childhood Obesity Policy Resource Center

Washington, DC (PRWEB) June 13, 2013

Women In Government (WIG) today announced the launch of the Childhood Obesity Policy Resource Center, designed to provide information and resources regarding issues surrounding childhood obesity. To learn more about these subject areas visit http://www.womeningovernment.org/obesity.

The policy resource center is funded by a grant from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and was awarded through Leadership for Healthy Communities, an RWJF national program that assists state and local leaders in their efforts to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic.

Today, more than 23.5 million children and adolescents in the United Statesnearly one in three young peopleare either obese or overweight, putting them at higher risk for serious, even life-threatening health problems. However, recent data shows that states and cities that have taken a comprehensive policy approach to preventing obesity are beginning to see declines in obesity rates among children.

Women In Government looks forward to collaborating with women state legislators to increase opportunities for healthy eating and active living with the goal of reducing childhood obesity in their communities, said Marjorie Maginn, WIG president and executive director. This project serves as a critical part of our ongoing efforts to improve the health of our children and communities.

Inside the Childhood Obesity Policy Resource Center, viewers will find information regarding the following topics: Recent coverage of childhood obesity issues; coverage of policymakers; advocating for childhood obesity issues; access to a list of partners and studies developed to combat childhood obesity; strategies and programs that can be implemented in order to decrease the prevalence of childhood obesity; policies support ideas of physical activity in schools, access to healthy, affordable foods, and street-scale and community improvements; state legislation that has been introduced or enacted; regulations that have been finalized in order to decrease the prevalence of childhood obesity; legislation, laws, and regulations support ideas of physical activity in school, access to healthy, affordable foods, and street-scale and community improvements; and legislative champions who have done outstanding work to prevent and reduce childhood obesity in their communities.
