WHY: The Crotona Park East neighborhood had, until recently, suffered from high commercial vacancy rate on Southern Boulevard, and an annual retail leakage rate (unmet demand) of $ 132 million. It was, after all, the area that President Carter had called the worst neighborhood in America in the mid-1970s.

But thats all changing. WHEDco has helped local small business owners to form the SBMA, launched street cleanup projects, Shop Local campaigns, a website connecting shoppers to businesses, and have advocated for the City to improve neighborhoods lighting, streetscapes and subway stations. The results: commercial vacancies fell from 24% to 12% in the last two years. Boogie Down the Boulevard! will further promote the growth of the Southern Boulevard commercial district by bringing more customers to local shops and cultural vibrancy to the community.
