Traditionally, laser skin therapy has been used to clear the brown patches, but on skins of colour, this can be tricky. Based on the Fitzpatrick Skin Types standard, only skin types 1-1V may be treated safely with most lasers. Hyperpigmentation occurs when there is an excess production of melanin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for our hair, eye and skin colour and is produced by melanocytes in the epidermis. With age or excessive sun exposure, melanin is no longer distributed evenly; resulting in uneven patches on the skin whereas melasma occurs at a deeper layer of the skin and can be caused by hormonal fluctuations due to pregnancy, menopause or oral contraceptives.
