Cheri Mittermaier was taking a class at the Armory Arts Center in West Palm Beach in 2005. The course was a figurative sculpture class. This was her first experience with a live model. The model was a young African American male named Andre. He was a student at the Armory. Andre was a potter on the wheel.
Andre had a very muscular body. His masculinity made it effortless for Mittermaier to sculpt her work. When it came time to sculpt Andre's face, Cheri felt it was going to be a challenge. She did not want to make him look cartoonishly African American. Her instructor, Maritza Cornejo, suggested to Cheri to go around the room and see how the rest of the class was executing Andre's face. To her surprise, everyone in the class was giving the model a Caucasian face and hair. Mittermaier was appalled to say the least. So she returned to her sculpture and carefully carved out Andre's face to the best of her ability. Cheri wanted to capture Andre, the male model sitting in front of her. When it came to the area of Andre's hair, Maritza assisted her. At that moment Cheri realized that she was determined to make art for the sake of art and not for the money.
The artwork "Andre" was terra cotta. Cheri decided to glaze her sculpture. The piece was glazed and fired multiple times in the kiln at the Armory. The sculpture "Andre" was requested by Agora Gallery, located in New York City, NY to be included in an exhibition that they were having in March 2012. The gallery wanted the ceramic "Andre" but a decision was made to bronze "Andre" for the show instead. "Andre" was the second sculpture Cheri had made.
Cheri Mittermaier was born in 1962 in the state of Indiana, USA. She is a graduate of Purdue University with a Bachelors degree in Psychology with a concentration in Fine Arts and Humanities. Cheri currently lives and works in West Palm Beach, Florida, USA
