Pediatric Endocrinologist Patricia Vuguin, MD, Joins Cohen Childrens Medical Center

New Hyde Park, NY (PRWEB) February 07, 2013

Cohen Childrens Medical Center of New York today announced the appointment of Patricia Vuguin, MD, MSc, to the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology one of seven pediatric specialties that earned Cohen a top 50 ranking in US News & World Report's 2012-13 Americas Best Childrens Hospitals survey.

Dr. Vuguin, an associate professor of pediatrics at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, has a strong clinical and research background in pediatric endocrinology. She comes to Cohen after 14 years as an attending pediatric endocrinologist at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, Jacobi Medical Center, North Central Bronx Hospital and St. Barnabas Hospital, also in the Bronx, and as an assistant and associate professor of pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx.

As a physician-scientist, Dr. Vuguin works with young people at risk for such conditions as obesity, insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. Currently, she is also conducting basic research that asks relevant questions in the area of fetal programming of adult disease, and how that relates to her patient population.

Over the years, Dr. Vuguin has developed a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal imbalance that causes infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne and obesity. One of her missions is to work on re-evaluating the diagnosis and treatment of PCOS in teenagers.

Dr. Vuguin earned her medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine in Argentina, did her residency and fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center, and attended the Karolinska Hospital Post-Graduate School in Sweden. She then completed a Master of Science Training Program in Clinical Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. During her fellowship and early faculty career, she developed a special interest in female reproduction and fetal programming of adult diseases such as obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes.

A prodigious researcher and writer, Dr. Vuguins research has been published in more than 33 peer-reviewed articles, including The Journal of Clinical Investigations, The Journal of Biological Chemistry, Diabetes, Endocrinology and American Journal of Physiology.

Dr. Vuguin joins a team of experienced physicians, certified diabetes nurse educators and nutritionists, as well as a mental health support staff that offer both individual and group classes for pediatric diabetes education. The pediatric endocrinology group practice at Cohen offers advanced diagnostic and treatment protocols for diseases of the endocrine system, including diabetes and growth disorders. The foundations of the endocrine system are glands and hormones that influence nearly every cell, organ and function of the body.

Cohen provides outpatient pediatric endocrinology consultations at 1991 Marcus Avenue in Lake Success, NY, and inpatient care at its main campus in New Hyde Park, NY. With a juvenile diabetes program approved by the American Diabetes Association, Cohen treats hundreds of children with all types of diabetes and offers support for insulin-infusion pumps and continuous glucose monitoring. The hospital pediatric endocrinology center is also recognized by New York State as a referral center for newborn screening in congenital hypothyroidism and adrenal hyperplasia.
