iDerms Brings Smartphone Technology to Dermatology

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) May 29, 2013

iDerms, a pioneer in online direct-to-patient dermatology, today announced the Internet Dermatology Network (IDN), an innovative new way for patients to get expert dermatologic care fast without ever visiting the dermatologists office. IDN lets patients snap an image of their skin condition with their smartphone or digital camera and send it to their dermatologist for immediate diagnosis and treatment.

One of my children developed a spot on his forehead. On the same day I was able to get a diagnosis through the Internet Dermatology Network and some peace of mind without ever leaving my house, said Liz Castignani, a mother in San Jose, California. Ive used IDN several times and it gives me an answer to pressing skin concerns so much faster.

Through easy access from a smartphone, tablet or PC, IDN provides not only convenience but more importantly earlier diagnosis and treatment of a range of skin conditions. Many potentially dangerous skin conditions arent treated in a timely manner due to the inconvenience and long wait times typical of dermatology office visits. With IDN, not only can dermatologists recommend immediate treatments for minor skin conditions, but IDN can serve as pre-screen more serious conditions.

IDN is a breakthrough platform that brings the Internet and mobile technology to the critical area of diagnosing and treating skin conditions, said Dr. Christopher Schmidt, a dermatologist and a founder of iDerms. IDN compliments a dermatologists existing practice, offering full access to his/her expertise with a few mouse clicks or taps on their smartphone or tablet. Being embraced by both patients, primary care doctors, and dermatologists, IDN is a win/win for both patients and doctors.

IDN offers more accurate diagnosis and treatment than general physician evaluations. A recent article in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology compared diagnoses and treatments made by referring pediatricians to the diagnoses and treatments rendered by the consulting dermatologists. The diagnoses and treatments between the dermatologists and the pediatricians differed in approximately half of the cases.

Instead of relying on primary care doctors, IDN allows anyone with a skin condition to be evaluated by a dermatologist. This access is especially beneficial for patients who are elderly, have busy work or home schedules, or live in rural areas where long distance travel may be required.

One of my young long-term care facility patients was able to get a dermatology consultation via IDN without enduring a lengthy ambulance ride to Lucile Packard Childrens Hospital, said Dr. W. James Silva, a pediatric critical care specialist in Los Gatos, California.
