Great HealthWorks, Makers of Omega XL, Report on New Omega-3 Study

Hollywood, FL (PRWEB) June 10, 2013

A new research report published in Neurology suggests that a diet rich in Omega 3 may help in memory and thinking processes.

The research findings are based on information gathered over a four-year period by the Reasons for Geographic and Radical Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study, one of the largest medical studies to date. The REGARDS study consisted of over 17,000 participants who were chosen from a national sample of the population. The average age of each participant was approximately 64 years.

Over the course of the study, the participants dietary habits were carefully evaluated to see how well they adhered to a Mediterranean-type diet. A Mediterranean diet is low in saturated fat, meat, and dairy but high in foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids. Testing was then done on memory and thinking process in regular intervals over the course of four years. The study ultimately found that only 7% of healthy participants developed a decline in memory and thinking abilities. Healthy participants adhering most closely to the Mediterranean-type of diet were 19% less likely to develop memory and thinking problems. It is interesting to note that the researchers found that the diet had little to no positive effect on participants with diabetes.

There are currently no specific treatments for Alzheimers and other dementia-related conditions. Therefore, the studys focus on the implications of diet modification is important. The findings show evidence that healthy individuals may help delay the onset of memory loss or decrease in cognitive functions simply by choosing to eat differently. By avoiding saturated fat and increasing their consumption of omega-3, individuals may help protect their memory and thinking processes.
