The DuPont Clear into the Future (CITF) program has awarded grants and fellowships totaling $ 245,000 to 12 organizations from southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware in support of their work to improve and enhance the Delaware Estuary.
Ten non-governmental organizations (NGOs) received grants, including: Brandywine Conservancy, Delaware Nature Society, National Audubon Society, New Jersey Audubon Society, Partnership for Delaware Estuary, Pennsylvania Environmental Council, Pennsylvania Sea Grant, Rutgers-Haskins Shellfish Lab and Stroud Water Research Center.
They will conduct projects that will focus on a diversity of needs such as: source water protection (Brandywine Conservancy), migratory shorebirds (National Audubon), monitoring and stewardship programs (Partnership for the Del. Estuary, NJ Audubon), education programs (Pennsylvania Environmental Council, Pennsylvania Sea Grant, Project Ports, Delaware Nature Society) and advancing DNA tools (Stroud Water Research Center).
Two colleges, Delaware State University and University of Delaware, received fellowships, which they will be provide to outstanding graduate students to support the novel conservation research theyre doing to help expand peoples understanding of the Estuary.
Dawn Rittenhouse, DuPont Director-Sustainability, who spoke during the awards program, said This is the seventh year that Clear into the Future has provided awards to university researchers, conservationists and educators in the Delaware Estuary. Since the program began in 2007, it has donated over $ 2.2 million in grants to various organizations working to support the Delaware Estuary, and to improve or enhance this working and living resource for the future.
Rittenhouse also said this is the first year Clear into the Future supported projects that were identified by the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary Alliance for Comprehensive Ecological Solutions (ACES). Through ACES, PDE seeks to develop an inventory of funding needs in the Estuary, and identifies their view of the most important projects in the Estuary.
Clear into the Future is a DuPont community-based conservation program with an ongoing commitment to maintain and improve the health and beauty of the Delaware River Estuary. The program focuses on using science, volunteerism, education and special projects to help preserve and enhance the natural beauty and integrity of the estuary.
