Combatting stress with alcohol makes you fat and miserable, says DietAssist

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 18 May 2013

DietAssist has warned that the people using alcohol to curb stress risk becoming fat and miserable because they are ignoring the calorie content of their evening tipple.

The warning follows a report in the Daily Mail based on a study published in the journal BMC Public Health (October, 2012) showing that those who drank at home viewed alcohol as a reward for chores after work hours, such as looking after their children and cooking dinner for the family.

The researchers, from the University of Sunderland, say there is a common perception among the middle class that drinking at home is safe but that in fact they may be more prone to alcohol dependency than young binge drinkers who go out every weekend.

NHS figures show that professionals are almost twice as likely to drink heavily as those on lower incomes.

They regard having a glass or two of wine or the odd tipple as a necessary reward after a long day at work and looking after their children.

DietAssist has warned that sharing a bottle of wine with your partner each night can translate into around 1lb of weight gain every 2 weeks, which is nearly 2 stone per year.

Paul Howard, from DietAssist, said, Many people seem oblivious to how these small, regular amounts of alcohol can cause long-term weight gain. The problem isnt just the calories in the alcohol itself, but also the late night snacks, hangover breakfasts and comfort food which so often go with it.

Were not saying that people should give up alcohol altogether. Rather, we urge people to become aware of how they are using alcohol - especially if the stress relieving qualities are starting to become overshadowed by the stress and misery of being overweight.

The DietAssist programme is the result of over 20 years experience of helping people to lose weight effectively, and uses the latest psychological techniques to avoid the self sabotage and demotivation that dieters commonly experience.

The DietAssist programme helps dieters strengthen their motivation and resolve, and creates the optimum psychological state for success. It is designed to work alongside any weight loss programme or sensible eating plan.
