Colle Farmers Market, an Organic Farmers Market, Celebrates Growth of Organic Food Industry

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) June 10, 2013

On June 10, Colle Farmers Market, an organic farmers market, celebrates the rapid growth of the organic food industry as cited in a Sustainable Business article.

According to an article published by Sustainable Business, the International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements (IFOAM) revealed statistics on sales growth in the organic food industry. While the most recent statistics are from 2011, the article says the global organic food industry has grown to about $ 63 billion. In that time period, the global industry increased about 170 percent.

The article also revealed that the United States is the single largest market for organic foods. The IFOAM says organic food sales reached $ 31.5 billion in the U.S. in 2011, which was up 9.5 percent from the previous year.

A representative from Colle Farmers Market, says there is a high demand for organic food in the U.S. People in the United States are learning more about the health and environmental benefits of eating organic food, hence the steep rise, the Colle rep says. We are striving to help people understand how to live healthy, sustainable lives and were excited that the industry is growing worldwide. Our goal is to spread awareness and show more people how great organic food really is.

However, even though there is a high consumer demand for organic food, the Colle rep says there are still not enough organic farmers to support the need.

The article says the U.S. gets most of its organic food from developing countries. And, even with all of the growth that this industry has seen, the article reports that organic agriculture is practiced on less than 1 percent of the worlds farming acreage.

In order to support the needs of people, the U.S. government should give farmers more incentive to use organic methods instead of traditional methods, the Colle rep says. The process to become a certified organic farm is very expensive and time consuming, which is why many farms dont make the move. If developing countries are having success with organic farming initiatives, theres no reason why an agricultural country like the U.S. should be lagging.

Colle Farmers Market is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about sustainable consumption and responsible conservation. The Colle movement is dedicated to connecting natural product vendors, organic farmers and all people who are living an organic and natural lifestyle.
