Hidden Hearing Respond to Research that Reveals the Firm Molecular Handshake Needed for Hearing

(PRWEB UK) 30 November 2012

Researchers from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University in the US have mapped the precise 3-D atomic structure of a thin protein filament that is vital for cells in the inner ear as well as calculating the force needed to pull it apart.

First published in the journal, Nature, the study revealed characteristics of the most vulnerable area of structure called the tip link. Tip links are vital to hair cells which in turn are vital for hearing and balance. Tip links are strings of protein that physically connect the cilia of hairs found on these cells, but a mutation in proteins can result in congenital deafness.

These new findings will provide an understanding of how noise can break a tip link and potentially cause a hearing problem as well as opening opportunities for research into noise-induced hearing loss.

A spokesperson from Hidden Hearing said:

New research into the biology of the ear and the causes of certain hearing loss is important for the development of treatment for hearing impairment. This opens up further opportunity for new insight into hearing loss and hopefully further treatment for deafness.

BACDT respond to reports claiming youth regard hairdressing more important than their dental health

(PRWEB UK) 10 December 2012

A significant number of young adults believe their hair appointment is more important than regular dental health check ups.

In a recent survey by Denplan released on the 7th of November 2012, nearly half of 18-24 year olds surveyed said they prioritise the time they had put into their personal appearance over time they put aside for dental care and treatment. The research by Denplan also revealed 57 per cent think they could improve the maintenance of their teeth with 38 per cent prioritising luxury spending on hair appointments, jewelry and clothes, higher than spending on their dental health.

Dentist Martin Fallowfield told Denplan he wasnt surprised by the statistics stating, Many young people I see in my surgery focus on having a Hollywood smile, rather than the health of their teeth and gums... and so I spent a lot of time explaining why it is so important to look after their oral health.

The British Association of Clinical Dental Technicians (BACDT), which promotes the awareness and use of certified dental professionals across the UK, believe this statistic reflects the lack of concern younger generations have on their oral health.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, Richard Daniels CEO stated, It is a growing concern that younger people are placing their oral hygiene and dental care lower on their everyday priorities than hair and beauty products.

However in the study 34 per cent of those asked within the same age bracket said they did not feel their is enough information readily available on how to properly look after their teeth and gums, twice the proportion as in the 55-64 age category.

Daniels continued, A lack of dental care can have a detrimental effect on a persons health. With such a high percentage of young people saying they cant find the right information, this could be a vital factor why oral hygiene is pushed so far down the list."

We need to encourage a better awareness around the importance of dental health amongst young adults, so they can take more responsibility and interest in looking after their teeth and gums. If we fail to act, we could face a serious problem.

Hidden Hearing Respond to Research that Uses Genetic Patch to Stop Deafness

(PRWEB UK) 19 February 2013

Researchers at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in Chicago, have developed a tiny genetic patch which can be used to prevent a form of deafness that runs in families, reports the BBC.

Usher Syndrome causes defective sections in a genetic code and causes problems with hearing, sight and balance. In many types of Ushers Syndrome, hearing loss is tied to different errors in the patients DNA. When they try to build a protein called harmonin, which is needed to form the tiny hairs in the ears that detect sound, it does not finish the job.

The study was published in Journal Nature Medicine and showed that some defects can be corrected in mice to restore some hearing. They designed a small strip of genetic material which attaches to the mutation and keeps the body building the protein. Mice with Usher Syndrome were injected with the genetic patch and grew up being able to hear and had no balance problems.

More research is needed to understand how the new therapy could be used in humans.

A spokesperson from Hidden Hearing said:

It is exciting to hear of more developments in the treatment for different types of hearing loss. Scientists have been making great progress and hopefully it wont be too long before some of these treatments are available for humans.

Hidden Hearing Respond to Researchers Identifying Important Inner Ear Cells

(PRWEB UK) 6 March 2013

Researchers at Stanford Medical School of Medicine have identified a group of progenitor cells in the inner ear that can become the sensory hair cells and adjacent supporting cells that enable hearing.

Studying these progenitor cells could someday lead to discoveries that will help millions suffering from hearing loss due to damaged or impaired sensory hair cells.

In research published online in Development, it was identified that a class of cells called tympanic border cells can give rise to hair cells and the cells that support them during a phase of cochlear maturation after birth.

A spokesperson for Hidden Hearing said:

Further understanding of the biology of the ear is important to help understand how the ear works and what can be done to treat any problems within the ear that can cause hearing loss. Research such as this may one day see further treatments and solutions for hearing problems.

Hidden Hearing Respond to New Research About Mammal Ears

(PRWEB UK) 4 April 2013

Scientists have recently discovered a rupture and repair process within mammal ears that could be the reason behind ear infections and hearing defects.

When a mammal embryo develops, the middle ear appears to form in a pop and patch way that seals one end with a substandard infection-prone tissue.

The researchers found that the middle ear begins life as a pouch of tissue, the lining then ruptures at one end and the break lets in a different kind of tissue which forms the tiny bones in the middle ear. The tissue is called the neural crest and is less effective as the patch in the middle ear can flake off when infected and also does not have the protective hair like cilia that sweeps away debris in the rest of the middle ear.

A spokesperson from Hidden Hearing said:

This research allows us to understand more about why the ear could be susceptible to infection and possible causes of hearing defects. If you have any concern about your hearing, you should book a no obligation hearing test at one of our Hidden Hearing centres across the UK.

Hidden Hearing Respond to Dr Miriam Stoppards Comments on Protecting Hearing

(PRWEB UK) 2 May 2013

Dr Miriam Stoppard has warned about the dangers of modern living on hearing, and highlighted the dangers people expose themselves to when using MP3 players, attending nightclubs and even using hair dryers!

Cells in the inner ear are sensitive to damage, with loud noise over a period of time causing damage to the hair cells, which cannot repair themselves once damaged.

Dr Miriam warned that damage earlier in life can accumulate to deafness in middle age and that the unsafe use of MP3 players could play a key part in hearing loss.

A spokesperson from Hidden Hearing said:

Protecting hearing as much as possible in our day to day life is essential for hearing health as we get older. The increasing use of MP3s has exposed many people to unsafe levels of noise and people are advised to turn the volume down.
