North Shore-LIJ Investing $175M in Cancer Institute Expansion

LAKE SUCCESS, NY (PRWEB) April 11, 2013

The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today it is making an initial investment of $ 175 million to expand its cancer services throughout the New York metropolitan area. In establishing the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute, the health system is opening and expanding cancer treatment centers throughout Long Island, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island.

Historically, North Shore-LIJ's cancer services have been delivered by its individual hospitals, working through their full-time hematologists and oncologists, and affiliated community based physicians, who collectively treat more than 16,000 new cancer patients every year -- more than any other hospital in the metropolitan area. As part of the health systems new initiative, the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute now has signed on approximately 150 physician members throughout the New York area in 20 cancer specialties.

"Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in this country and aging baby boomers will increase the demand for cancer services, said Daniel Budman, MD, co-director of the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute, and chief of hematology/oncology at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center. Bringing together the tremendous talent and expertise into one group will reduce fragmentation and improve the coordination of multidisciplinary care across the continuum."

To establish a broader regional presence, the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute is investing $ 175 million over the next several years to open new cancer treatment centers and expand existing ones throughout the New York area.

A $ 67 million construction project is already underway at North Shore-LIJs Center for Advanced Medicine (CFAM) in Lake Success, where 61,150 square feet of interior space is being redeveloped contiguous to the current Monter Cancer Center. Nearly 40,000 square feet are being added to the current 37,000-square-foot Monter Center, which has been serving North Shore University Hospital's (NSUH) oncology outpatients since 2006. It will now be the new home for the fully integrated ambulatory hematology/oncology and chemotherapy treatment services delivered by both NSUH and LIJ Medical Center.

In addition, radiation medicine and surgical, gynecologic and neuro oncology services now delivered at LIJ Medical Center and NSUH will be relocated to CFAM, where nearly 50,000 square feet of space has been set aside for three linear accelerators, a gamma knife, stereotactic radiation and brachytherapy services. Diagnostic radiology, breast imaging, uro-oncology and ambulatory surgery programs are already based at CFAM, providing a fully integrated spectrum of comprehensive cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, genetic counseling, nutritional and social work, supportive care and survivorship under one roof all under the auspices of the Cancer Institute.

"Having all of these services available in the same building will strengthen the continuum of care and provide easy access to a full range of services, which is especially important because of the multidisciplinary approach that has become so essential for cancer patients," said Louis Potters, MD, co-director of the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute, and the health system's chair of radiation medicine.

Other investments that North Shore-LIJ is making in its Cancer Institute throughout the region include:

North Shore-LIJ Partners With Women on a Mission to Cure Breast Cancer

Manhasset, NY (PRWEB) April 18, 2013

The Manhasset Womens Coalition Against Breast Cancer (MWCABC) on Friday presented a $ 90,000 check to Feinstein Institute for Medical Research investigators Iuliana Shapira, MD and Annette Lee, PhD. The money will go directly to the Breast and Ovarian Specimen Bank, a joint research endeavor of the Feinstein Institute and North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute. Drs. Shapira and Lee established the specimen bank in 2010 to serve as a vital resource for discovering and validating new biomarkers for the early detection of breast and/or ovarian cancer, as well as predicting the disease course and outcomes, treatment response and risk of relapse.

The generosity of this gift is surpassed only by the love and caring of the thoughtful and foresighted women of the Manhasset Coalition who bestowed it upon us, said Dr. Shapira, MD, a Feinstein investigator who also serves as director of the Cancer Genetics Program at the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute.

With the strong and continued support of important womens groups like the MWCABC, we have the ability to continue our investigations and seek further breakthroughs on the road to curing cancer, said Dr. Lee, a Feinstein geneticist. We plan to make these amazing women not only proud, but part of our continuing scientific endeavors.

The Manhasset Womens Coalition has been a tremendous force in our community, said Kevin Dwyer, senior vice president and chief development officer at North Shore-LIJ. We are absolutely thrilled to have the Coalition on our side as we take ambitious steps forward with our nationally renowned Cancer Institute.

The two investigators initially teamed up to conduct a first-of-its-kind study dedicated to improving the survival rates of women diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer. The MWCABC funding will go to support their investigation of Plasma microRNAs as biomarkers for predicting the benefit of surgery and adjuvant or neoadjuvant chemotherapy to treat breast cancer. Preliminary studies from the laboratory suggest that micro RNA, a genetic marker embedded in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), indicates whether an ovarian tumor is benign or malignant, and whether the patient will benefit from chemotherapy after the surgical removal of the tumor. Earlier this year, they were awarded the Alison Conyngham Neisloss Collaborative Women in Science Award, given by the Feinstein Institutes Advancing Women in Science and Medicine (AWSM) organization.

Since their initial project received Institutional Review Board approval in November of 2010, more than 350 women have been enrolled in the breast ovarian cancer tissue bank. Recent published findings identified four main subtypes of breast cancer, one of which has distinct similarities to ovarian cancer. This makes their research efforts to simultaneously study both breast and ovarian cancer even more important in breast cancer research.

The Manhasset Womens Coalition Against Breast Cancer (MWCABC) is an all-volunteer, non-profit charitable organization founded in 1997 to unite the women of Manhasset, Long Island in the fight against breast cancer. MWCABC has been supporting North Shore-LIJ since 2004, providing over $ 300,000 in philanthropic support for North Shore-LIJs breast cancer research and supportive care programs, in addition to palliative care. The $ 90,000 gift is the Coalitions largest gift to date. This gift includes $ 10,000 contributed by the Junior Coalition of MWCABC, high-school aged members who run their own fund raising efforts for financial support of North Shore-LIJ programs, as well as share holiday treats each year with families on the North Shore University Hospital Palliative Care Unit. The MWCABC is also a significant referral source within the Long Island community, with strong efforts in this area by board member Dorothy Forte, who plays a key role in the Coalitions ongoing activities.

Northern Berkshire Beekeepers Association Meeting, May 28, 2013, North Adams Massachusetts Price Chopper Community Room

North Adams, MA (PRWEB) May 28, 2013

The Northern Berkshire Beekeepers Association (NBBA) May 28, 2013 meeting will take place 7:00 PM at the North Adams, Massachusetts Price Chopper Community Room on the 2nd floor.

In the context of extremely heavy honey bee losses reported by bee keepers nationwide last year, NBBA members Claude and Janet Hoard can be proud of losing only 3 hives out of 60. At this month's meeting, they will share their vast knowledge of beekeeping experience, management practices, and will be available for questions and answers.

In addition, there will be a celebratory cake in honor of Lloyd Vosburgh, founding member and first president of NBBA for his lifetime of service to honey bees and achievement as Massachusetts Beekeeper of the Year.

I encourage anybody in the North Adams, Massachusetts region who has an interest in beekeeping in to join the Northern Berkshire Beekeepers Association, said Mary Ross of the Mohawk Valley Trading Company where they specialize in raw varietal honey. Varietal honey is made primarily from the nectar of a particular type of blossom or flower. To capture the unique character and flavor of the blossom or flower, beekeepers must study botanical bloom and flowering patterns when planning hive placement.

About Honey Bees

Bees are insects that are related to wasps and ants and there are approximately 20,000 known species of bees found on every continent except Antarctica. Honeybees (Apis mellifera) are not native to the United States as they were introduced by Europeans to produce honey and beeswax. Honeybees are responsible for pollinating 80% of flowering crops, and without them the worlds food supply would be dramatically reduced.

As people become more conscious of the important role that honeybees play in their daily lives, beekeeping is becoming more mainstream and is now allowed in many urban and suburban municipalities. Since 2006, beekeepers in the North America and Europe have noticed a mystifying occurrence called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) in which worker bees from a beehive or European honey bee colony abruptly disappear, leaving the queen and insect larvae behind, unable to fend for themselves. While such disappearances have occurred throughout the history of apiculture, the term colony collapse disorder was first applied to a drastic rise in the number of disappearances of Western honey bee colonies in North America in late 2006.

In 2013, a formal review by the European Food Safety Authority stated that recent studies show that neonicotinoid pesticides, some of the most widely used pesticides in the world, pose an unacceptably high risk to bees, and that the industry-sponsored science upon which regulatory agencies' claims of safety have relied is flawed and possibly deliberately deceptive.

Honey has been used by humans since ancient times for its health benefits and as a sweetener and flavoring for many foods and beverages, with tea being the most popular. Next to maple syrup, it is the most commonly used natural sweetener in North America.

Honey bees make honey by collecting nectar from flowers and regurgitating it into beeswax honeycombs inside their hive. Beeswax is a natural wax produced in the hive of honey bees of the genus Apis and its most popular uses are beeswax candles and as an ingredient in natural skin care products.

The flavor and color of honey is determined by the type of flower the bees gather the nectar from; therefore, when cooking or baking with honey it is a good idea to taste the honey before using it in a recipe. For example: a dark honey like tulip poplar-black locust honey will result in a strong, heavy, pungent flavor, whereas orange blossom honey will result in a delicate orange flavor. Dark-colored honey is considered to be higher in minerals and antioxidants than light-colored honey, and one of the most well-known dark-colored honeys is buckwheat honey. Raw buckwheat honey contains a higher amount of minerals and an antioxidant called polyphenol, which gives it its dark color. The health benefits of buckwheat honey are many and well known.

The rawest honey available is comb honey which is sections of the hexagonal-shaped beeswax cells of the honeycomb that contain raw honey that have been cut from the wooden frames of a beehive.

Using raw honey is a long-term investment strategy for optimal health and personal care; the dividends are overall mental, physical and spiritual well-being. Like a blue chip stock, raw honey should be included in any health-conscious consumers immune system boosting portfolio and the return on investment of substituting honey for refined sugar in the human diet is incalculable.

Another product made by honey bees and used by humans is bee propolis; a resinous substance that honey bees collect from tree buds and bark or other botanical sources and mix with beeswax, nectar and pollen. This mixture is used by bees to seal gaps in the hive and by humans for its health benefits and as a traditional, natural or homeopathic medicine.

North American Grooming Store Launches with Selection of Luxury Brands

Toronto, Ontario (PRWEB) February 25, 2013

Kaliandee Ltd is pleased to announce the launch of their online store for Canadian and American customers, with a selection of mens high-end traditional shaving supplies, grooming items and accessories. These, and other gifts for men and personal care items, can now be found at Kaliandee.com.

There has been a resurgence in men returning to traditional shaving methods in recent years. This is initiated in part by the rising costs of cartridge razors, a rise in interest in all things retro and a desire by many men to reconnect with some male pastimes in an era when many traditional aspects of masculinity are being discarded or redefined. Last year this was further bolstered by the memorable cut-throat shave in the latest James Bond movie, Skyfall, leading to a sudden boost in searches for straight razors.

John at Kaliandee believes this is not just a passing fad, with men finding that modern products such as canned foam give inferior shaves compared to a properly lathered shaving cream or soap applied with the hair lifting and mildly exfoliating effect of a good quality shaving brush. The added appeal of owning a razor that has the solid, hefty feel of something made to last a lifetime rather than until the next marketing campaign and inevitable addition of a blade ensures that most men who opt to try the traditional methods stay hooked on them.

Founded in Canada in early 2012 by two wet-shaving enthusiasts to bring affordable everyday luxury to North American men, Kaliandee currently stocks a selection of traditional shaving products as well as mens accessories from Europe, Great Britain and the United States. Notable brands include reputable London barbers and perfumers Geo. F. Trumper, D.R Harris, Taylor of Old Bond Street along with Simpsons, manufacturers of fine shaving brushes, and Dovo of Solingen and its subsidiary Merkur. Edwin Jagger, the famed English manufacturer of razors, brushes, shaving accessories and soaps are the latest addition to the line-up. As for the future Kaliandee will continue to add new brands consisting of high quality products for every man and budget.

Kaliandee has found that shaving items and high quality mens accessories are proving increasingly popular as gift items, particularly with women looking for gifts for men, and as graduation and groomsmen gifts. With this in mind, Kaliandee now offers a high standard of gift wrapping for their products, as well as a modest but carefully selected range of leather items from Bosca and Piel Frama.

For more information on getting started with wet-shaving, see Kaliandees advice page.

Minnesota School of Cosmetology Student Advances to Wella Professionals North American TrendVision Competition

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) May 30, 2013

Minnesota School of Cosmetology (MSC) student Roselyn Bannerman took her style skills to the stage at Wella Professionals Regional Trend Vision competition held at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in April. Roselyn took first place in the student division, earning her a place in the North American Trend Vision Competition on July 19. The winners of the North American competition will be invited to attend the world competition held in Germany.

The reason I am pursuing an education in the cosmetology field is because it is what I love doing, 19-year-old Bannerman said. It has always been my dream to do hair.

Wella Professionals is a leading innovator in hair trends, style and color. Each year, they identify trends, inspiring stylists worldwide. This years theme is The Sound of Color which is illustrated by the variety of hues presented. These competitions are a showcase of those trends.

The stylists are asked to put their own unique spin on the trends by creating works of art, with hair being the canvas. Hundreds of stylists enter the competition by submitting photos of their visions and creations online. Judges from Wella then narrow that pool of applicants down to those who are invited to compete on stage in front of a panel of judges. About 15 students participated in the live competition.

A competition like this introduces students to the professional aspects outside of school, said Kelvin Shoulders, an instructor at MSC. It teaches them how to work with deadlines. It prepares them on how to have forethought and execution. These things translate in a smaller capacity, like working with clients.

Another benefit to competing in such an event? It helps bolster their self-esteem, Shoulders said. MSC students are fortunate in that they have many opportunities available to compete in such events, as well as fashion shows and other competitions held on campus. These offer students a chance to experiment, practice, and, most important, learn.

Bannerman expressed interest in competing after representatives from Wella Professionals came and spoke to the students.

I decided to enter the competition because I wanted to put myself out there, Bannerman said. I wanted people to see my work and what I can do as a person. I also wanted to set the bar high for myself and others that were in the competition.

Shoulders offered Bannerman guidance throughout, from refining her hair creation to suggesting she pick a floor-length dress to wear. After all, this competition is about more than just hair its about style.

It is exciting to have a young student be rewarded so highly for the struggles and challenges they face from day to day, because sometimes just getting to school is an accomplishment in itself, said Angie Durkee, MSC salon school manager. I still remember the feeling that came over me when they announced [Bannermans] name. I had a feeling she was going to get in the top three, and when she won the Gold, it was surreal.

Bannerman teamed up with other MSC students for the competition. Teagan Mohs did the makeup on Lindsay Van Lith, who was the model.

I want to say thanks to my friends and schoolmates, Lindsay and Teagan, for their hard work, Bannerman said. Without them, I wouldnt be here. I love them both and appreciate all the hard work we put into the competition. This experience taught me that if you put your mind to it, anything is possible.
