Ultra Violet Rays May Cause Damage to the Eyes Today and Tomorrow

CHICAGO (PRWEB) April 24, 2013

As the weather continues to warm, more Americans will be heading outdoors to enjoy the sunshine. The public should know, however, that Ultra Violet (UV)-blocking sunglasses and hats are the ultimate sight-saving accessories to pair with their shorts, sandals, and short-sleeved shirts. Prevent Blindness America, the nations oldest volunteer eye health and safety organization, has declared May UV Awareness Month to help educate the public on the dangers of UV and how to protect the eyes.

While UV-A has lower energy, it penetrates deep into the eye and may injure the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sight in the center field of vision. UV-B radiation is presumably more dangerous and is mainly absorbed by the cornea and lens of the eye and can damage those tissues.

Sunglasses without UV protection may shade the eyes but actually cause the pupils to dilate, allowing in even more harmful rays. When going outside, both adults and children should always wear both a wide-brimmed hat or cap and the proper UV-rated sunglasses. Wrap-around sunglasses are best as they protect the eyes and the skin around the eyes. Some contact lenses may offer UV protection but they cannot protect the entire eye and the skin around it.

Photokeratitis, or corneal sunburn, is a result of intense exposure to UV-B. It is most common among individuals who spend long hours on the beach, in the water or on ski slopes without proper eye protection. It can be extremely painful and can result in temporary loss of vision for 1-2 days.

UV damage is also cumulative and has been linked to eye problems later in life including tumors, cataracts and macular degeneration, an eye disease which currently has no cure. Also, people who have had cataract surgery or other retinal disorders, and people who take certain medicines, such as tetracycline, sulfa drugs, birth control pills, diuretics and tranquilizers, are also at special risk.

Gloucestershire Dentists Warn of the Acid Dangers Hidden in Water How Drinking Water can Cause Tooth Decay

cheltenham (PRWEB UK) 1 May 2013

It is widely understood that sugary food and drinks can cause dental decay. Sugar in the mouth is broken down by bacteria to create acid which is washed around the mouth by saliva. The acid can attack tooth enamel, gradually dissolving the minerals on the surface of the tooth and allowing decay and cavities to appear.

However, it is not as simple as switching from sweet drinks to water. Dental experts at ICC Implant & Ceramic Dental Studios are warning that not all water has a neutral pH. Certain brands of water have actually been shown to have a low pH, meaning that you could essentially be drinking a dilute form of acid and lowering the pH in the mouth to create an environment where teeth are more at risk of erosion.

The pH scale measures acidity/alkalinity on a scale from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral, over 7 is alkaline and less than 7 is acidic; though it is not linear, so each pH value below 7 has ten times the acidity than the number above it. Tooth enamel can erode if acidity levels fall to 5.5 pH or below; while delicate root surfaces of teeth can be damaged from 6.5 pH.

Yet as certain brands of water have been shown to have pH levels as low as 4-5, ICC Implant & Ceramic Dental Studios are warning patients to be vigilant in choosing their bottled water.

A spokesperson explained:

We are seeing patients who do not understand how their teeth have become decayed when they have avoided sweets and sugary drinks. Yet drinking water with a low pH is like drinking a dilute acid and can quickly create a climate ideal for tooth decay.

We advise patients to choose carefully what they drink and check the pH levels on bottled water in particular. Depending on the soil type, tap water is less acid than bottled in many cases.

In addition, following basic good dental care advice is vital brushing teeth twice a day, avoiding snacking and sweet drinks between meals and having regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments, so that any early signs of dental decay can be treated quickly and stop the situation deteriorating. Prevention is better and cheaper than treatment and early intervention is better than waiting as dental decay is progressive and will only worsen with time.

We also advise patients to be aware that some people are simply more generally inclined to a lower pH. Indicators of this are conditions such as skin irritations, stomach acid, infections, headaches or mouth ulcers. These people are likely to have more acidic mouth environments and are therefore especially prone to dental issues.

However, the team are keen to reassure people that it is never too late to seek treatment and they should not be embarrassed to seek attention at any stage. ICC Implant & Ceramic Dental Studios see many patients who have neglected their dental health and require significant dental restoration. They also provide high quality dental hygiene to maintain good oral care and prevent further problems.

Their Gloucestershire centre sees patients from all over the country, who can receive extensive treatment in just one day thanks to their on-site laboratory based in the heart of the Cotswolds.

The 4x award-winning team includes 6 dental laboratory team members who work closely with the dental surgeons. They offer beautiful bespoke ceramic and porcelain teeth crowns in just one hour and implants in a morning. Complex all-on-four is achievable in just one day, making treatment plans complete in just one visit with faster recovery.

They also offer a range of increasingly popular cosmetic dentistry procedures including veneers and enamel. However, cosmetic dentistry is never at the expense of maintaining the best possible tooth structure and whatever treatment patients need, the aesthetic result is considered alongside functionality and health issues.

New Book CLEAN GUT Uncovers the Root Cause of Disease

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 30, 2013

In an age of highly advanced medicine, chronic diseases are on the rise. Nearly everyone seems to be suffering from some symptom, having tests done, and taking over-the-counter and prescription medications. But it's no longer necessary to get sick before getting healthy.

Alejandro Junger, M.D.s first book, the New York Times bestseller CLEAN, outlined a 21-day detox program to reactivate the bodys natural ability to heal itself, helping thousands to resolve persistent health issues. In his groundbreaking new book, Dr. Junger explains how we can preemptively attack disease before it takes root in the gut, rather than waiting to treat symptoms as they arise.

CLEAN GUT: The Breakthrough Plan for Eliminating the Root Cause of Disease and Revolutionizing Your Health (HarperOne; May 1, 2013; Hardcover) reveals that a damaged gut is at the root of nearly every symptom and medical condition and reveals how to repair the gut, eliminate the root of disease, have major and minor symptoms disappear, and discover what it means to be truly healthy.

The CLEAN GUT program prevents most chronic illnesses, including:
