Gloucestershire Dentists Warn of the Acid Dangers Hidden in Water How Drinking Water can Cause Tooth Decay

cheltenham (PRWEB UK) 1 May 2013

It is widely understood that sugary food and drinks can cause dental decay. Sugar in the mouth is broken down by bacteria to create acid which is washed around the mouth by saliva. The acid can attack tooth enamel, gradually dissolving the minerals on the surface of the tooth and allowing decay and cavities to appear.

However, it is not as simple as switching from sweet drinks to water. Dental experts at ICC Implant & Ceramic Dental Studios are warning that not all water has a neutral pH. Certain brands of water have actually been shown to have a low pH, meaning that you could essentially be drinking a dilute form of acid and lowering the pH in the mouth to create an environment where teeth are more at risk of erosion.

The pH scale measures acidity/alkalinity on a scale from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral, over 7 is alkaline and less than 7 is acidic; though it is not linear, so each pH value below 7 has ten times the acidity than the number above it. Tooth enamel can erode if acidity levels fall to 5.5 pH or below; while delicate root surfaces of teeth can be damaged from 6.5 pH.

Yet as certain brands of water have been shown to have pH levels as low as 4-5, ICC Implant & Ceramic Dental Studios are warning patients to be vigilant in choosing their bottled water.

A spokesperson explained:

We are seeing patients who do not understand how their teeth have become decayed when they have avoided sweets and sugary drinks. Yet drinking water with a low pH is like drinking a dilute acid and can quickly create a climate ideal for tooth decay.

We advise patients to choose carefully what they drink and check the pH levels on bottled water in particular. Depending on the soil type, tap water is less acid than bottled in many cases.

In addition, following basic good dental care advice is vital brushing teeth twice a day, avoiding snacking and sweet drinks between meals and having regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments, so that any early signs of dental decay can be treated quickly and stop the situation deteriorating. Prevention is better and cheaper than treatment and early intervention is better than waiting as dental decay is progressive and will only worsen with time.

We also advise patients to be aware that some people are simply more generally inclined to a lower pH. Indicators of this are conditions such as skin irritations, stomach acid, infections, headaches or mouth ulcers. These people are likely to have more acidic mouth environments and are therefore especially prone to dental issues.

However, the team are keen to reassure people that it is never too late to seek treatment and they should not be embarrassed to seek attention at any stage. ICC Implant & Ceramic Dental Studios see many patients who have neglected their dental health and require significant dental restoration. They also provide high quality dental hygiene to maintain good oral care and prevent further problems.

Their Gloucestershire centre sees patients from all over the country, who can receive extensive treatment in just one day thanks to their on-site laboratory based in the heart of the Cotswolds.

The 4x award-winning team includes 6 dental laboratory team members who work closely with the dental surgeons. They offer beautiful bespoke ceramic and porcelain teeth crowns in just one hour and implants in a morning. Complex all-on-four is achievable in just one day, making treatment plans complete in just one visit with faster recovery.

They also offer a range of increasingly popular cosmetic dentistry procedures including veneers and enamel. However, cosmetic dentistry is never at the expense of maintaining the best possible tooth structure and whatever treatment patients need, the aesthetic result is considered alongside functionality and health issues.

Sugar Land, TX (PRWEB) March 18, 2013

A Beautiful Smile at Lake Pointe has partnered with A Soldiers Smile, the nonprofit endorsed by Montel Williams, in order to offer discounted dental services for veterans in the Sugar Land area.

Through partnering with A Soldiers Smile, A Beautiful Smile at Lake Pointe will help active-duty soldiers and veterans get the dental care they need but arent otherwise eligible for through the Veterans Administration.

Its important to us to help those who have risked their lives for our nation, said Dr. Lance Jue, the lead Sugar Land dentist at A Beautiful Smile at Lake Pointe. The Veterans Administration does a terrific job caring for our veterans, but their services dont always cover all of a veterans needs. This program helps bridge the gap between the services our troops need and the services the VA provides.
