Breast Augmentation Do Women Prefer Round or Shaped Implants?

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) April 13, 2013

Many people question whether there is a true difference between shaped breast implants and round implants. Currently only the round gel implants are approved for general public use. Cohesive anatomically shaped breast implants are not approved in the United States, though trials for the latter are being conducted. A study published in the March 2013 volume of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery examined patients who underwent breast augmentation, approximately half with round implants and half with anatomically shaped implants. The study confirmed that patients had no difference in overall satisfaction between round and shaped implants (Go to: Go to goo.gl/KWnm3).

Im somewhat surprised at the results, says Dr. Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills. I would have anticipated that anatomically shaped implants would prove more popular.

Over the years silicone breast implants have changed in shape, thickness, and construction. The first generation lasted about eight years, and the second generation was thinner and rounder, leading to a more natural feel. After several reports of rupture and gel leakage into the body, a third generation of implants was created in 1982. The fourth generation of silicone breast implants offers a low-leakage shell and more cohesive silicone gel. A fifth generation is rounder and offers less rippling with a more "breast-like" look.

The study, conducted by researchers from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, set out to discover the patient reported outcomes of breast reconstruction using round implants versus shaped implants. The study included 65 women who had received round implants and 63 who had shaped implants.

The patients completed a special questionnaire that focused on various aspects of their lives such as general satisfaction, satisfaction with care, satisfaction with overall outcome, as well as psychosocial, sexual and physical well-being. Patients completed the questionnaire at one to four years post-surgery.

Women who had surgery with shaped implants had a satisfaction score of about 77 percent out of 100, whereas women who had round implants placed had a 75 percent satisfaction score. The study confirmed that there was very little difference in satisfaction across the board, except that women with shaped implants self-rated their breasts as firmer than the women who had received round implants.

Safety really is the most important issue, says Dr. Ourian. Of course, a good result and patient satisfaction would be next on the list.

San Clemente, CA Periodontist, Dr. Allen J. Schultz Improves Oral Health by Removing Gum Disease with Laser Surgery Before Placing Dental Implants

San Clemente, CA (PRWEB) June 07, 2013

Periodontist Dr. Allen Schultz now offers the use of a new laser gum disease treatment to improve a patients readiness for receiving dental implants. Patients have higher success with their implants when gum disease is removed, and now there is a less invasive gum surgery available that can remove diseased tissue while promoting healing.

Traditional treatments for gum disease involved general anesthetics, scalpels and long recovery periods. These methods also resulted in the loss of a large amount of healthy tissue as well as the removal of diseased gum tissue. Often the amount of gum that was removed would eliminate the option for a patient to receive an implant as there would not be sufficient tissue left to fully support the implant.

With todays new Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) technique, Dr. Schultz can treat only the diseased gum tissue, leaving all healthy tissue untouched, thereby retaining the maximum amount of tissue for improved oral health. This also allows for sufficient tissue to remain in order to support the placement of dental implants.

Aside from gum disease, a patient may often not be eligible for implants because they lack sufficient bone density in the jaw. In addition to being an effective gum disease treatment, LANAP actually stimulates the growth of new bone in the jaw, thereby creating a strong base for an implant. With the right amount of healthy soft gum tissue and strong bone, a periodontist can be assured of success in placing a dental implant.

Patients that require some treatment for a missing tooth or teeth typically choose between implants, bridges or dentures. All options have their advantages but only dental implants can provide the lifelong advantages of jawbone structure preservation as well as a lowered risk or need of repeated surgeries, as is common with bridges or dentures. With both bridges and dentures, there is nothing left in the actual jawbone to maintain overall structure and integrity so the bone actually degrades over time. This leads to a misshapen look and even sagging of the facial muscles and skin, giving an aged appearance. With successful gum disease treatment, patients can opt for implants to not only fill holes left by missing teeth but to prevent these future problems as well.
