Innovative Modular Solutions Once Again Recognized by the Modular Building Institute

Innovative Modular Solutions (IMS), headquartered in Bolingbrook, Illinois, received an Honorable Mention award at the annual Modular Building Institute (MBI) Convention on March 20 in Phoenix, AZ.

MBIs Awards of Distinction recognizes modular construction projects that demonstrate architectural excellence, technical innovation, cost-effectiveness, energy efficiency, and an accelerated construction timeline.

IMS and the project team met the criteria with a modular facility which provided a much needed upgraded building for the cosmetology program at Ashland Community and Technical College (ACTC) in Ashland, KY.

The 5,982 square foot building was designed to blend as seamlessly as possible into the surrounding campus, which involved saving as many trees as possible at the site. All plumbing and electrical needed for the styling and service stations and a limited sprinkler system was performed offsite, reducing the project schedule and cost.

The building was designed with several sustainable features including energy efficient lay-in lights coupled with occupancy sensors and an HVAC system that utilizes electric heat pumps with programmable thermostats and CO2 sensors, giving ACTC a cost effective, energy efficient solution.

The program now houses state of the art facilities for 48 students including a full-service salon for hair, skin and nail services, along with classrooms and offices. The salon is open to the public for students to be able to learn their trade, which includes haircuts, color and styling, manicures, pedicures, facials, skin care, and scalp treatments.

Additionally students gain experience styling wigs through the Stepping Stones program which

provides free wigs and wig maintenance to people suffering hair loss due to chemotherapy. A private entrance was installed at the rear of the building to allow the chemotherapy patients to discreetly come for free wigs and related services.

Each year the Awards of Distinction are given to recognize the best modular building construction projects completed by MBI members. An impartial panel of industry and non-industry construction and code experts, architects and engineers, and marketing professionals review each entry.

It is again an honor for IMS to win an award for the fifth consecutive year, commented Kevin Maiden, Vice President of IMS.
