Beat the Bunion Blues Before Being Benched

Sacramento, California (PRWEB) April 24, 2013

Do you have a bony bump on your big toe? If so, it just might be a bunion! said California Podiatric Medical Association Director Rebecca Moellmer, DPM. Dr. Moellmer is a podiatric physician and surgeon on faculty with the College of Podiatric Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California.

A bunion is an abnormal, bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe. Bunions form when the big toe pushes up against the other toes, forcing the big toe joint in the opposite direction, away from the normal profile of the foot. Over time, the abnormal position enlarges the big toe joint, further crowding the other toes and causing pain. Bunions can also lead to other toe deformities, such as hammertoe, where the joints in the adjoining toes also begin to bend.

Many people with bunions suffer from discomfort and pain as a result of the constant irritation caused by the friction and rubbing of the enlargement against footwear, said Dr. Moellmer.

Dr. Moellmer went on to say that with bunions the skin covering the toe can become red and tender, and because this joint flexes with every step, the more inflamed the bunion gets, the more it hurts to walk. Over time arthritis or bursitis may set in, and everyday walking may become difficult all contributing to chronic pain.

Studies show that women are anywhere from two to nine times more likely to develop a bunion than men! Bunions can occur for a number of reasons, but a common cause is wearing shoes that fit too tightly. Bunions can also develop as a result of an inherited structural defect, stress on the foot, or a medical condition such as arthritis.

Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the bunion and the amount of pain it causes.

Conservative treatment

Nonsurgical treatments that may relieve the pain and pressure of a bunion include:

Shoe changes. Wear roomy, carefully-fitted footwear designed to accommodate the bunion and not contribute toward its growth. Podiatric physicians are an excellent resource for finding the right shoe and getting the right fit.
Padding and taping. A podiatric physician can help tape and pad an affected foot in a normal position. This can reduce stress on the bunion and alleviate pain.
Shoe inserts. Orthotic devices can help distribute pressure evenly when the foot is moved, stabilize the joint, and place the foot in a correct position for walking and standing. A podiatric physician can recommend the orthotic device best suited for a particular type of bunion and its stage of development.
Exercise. Helps to maintain joint mobility and prevent stiffness or arthritis.
Medications. Acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or naproxen sodium (Aleve, others) may help control the pain of a bunion. Cortisone injections also can be helpful, and can be prescribed and administered by a podiatric physician.

Surgical options

If conservative treatment doesn't provide relief, surgery may be required. Podiatric physicians are trained to perform a number of surgical procedures for bunions. It is important to note that no particular surgery is best for every problem, and knowing what caused a particular bunion is essential for choosing the best procedure to ensure correction without recurrence.

Podiatric physicians are uniquely qualified among medical professionals to treat bunions, based on their education, training, and experience. Finding a licensed California podiatric physician is just a click away at CalPMA.org.

United States (PRWEB) May 13, 2013

The Mohawk Valley Trading Company is now accepting orders of their Comb Honey that is expected to be available approximately Mid-July 2013.

Comb honey is sections of the hexagonal-shaped beeswax cells of the honeycomb that contain raw honey that have been cut from the wooden frames of a beehive.

About Honey

Honey has been used by humans since ancient times for its health benefits and as a sweetener and flavoring for many foods and beverages, with tea being the most popular. Next to maple syrup, it is the most commonly used natural sweetener in North America.

Honey bees make honey by collecting nectar from flowers and regurgitating it into beeswax honeycombs inside their hive. Beeswax is a natural wax produced in the hive of honey bees of the genus Apis and its most popular uses are beeswax candles and as an ingredient in natural skin care products.

The flavor and color of honey is determined by the type of flower the bees gather the nectar from; therefore, when cooking or baking with honey it is a good idea to taste the honey before using it in a recipe. For example: a dark honey like tulip poplar-black locust honey will result in a strong, heavy, pungent flavor, whereas orange blossom honey will result in a delicate orange flavor. Dark-colored honey is considered to be higher in minerals and antioxidants than light-colored honey, and one of the most well-known dark-colored honeys is buckwheat honey. Raw buckwheat honey contains a higher amount of minerals and an antioxidant called polyphenol, which gives it its dark color. The health benefits of buckwheat honey are many and well known.

Using raw honey is a long-term investment strategy for optimal health and personal care; the dividends are overall mental, physical and spiritual well-being. Like a blue chip stock, raw honey should be included in any health-conscious consumers immune system boosting portfolio and the return on investment of substituting honey for refined sugar in the human diet is incalculable.

Another product made by honey bees and used by humans is bee propolis; a resinous substance that honey bees collect from tree buds and bark or other botanical sources and mix with beeswax, nectar and pollen. This mixture is used by bees to seal gaps in the hive and by humans for its health benefits and as a traditional, natural or homeopathic medicine.

Earth Day aside, dont compromise on being Clean and Green; Phosphate reduction legislation, comes into force for laundry detergent manufacturers this June

London, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Midlands (PRWEB UK) 23 April 2013

No compromise, Clean and Green are two things we take very seriously, says Louise from Distinctive Wash Ltd. Technology has been getting better and better in laundry and the industry has known for generations the negative effects of phosphates on aquatic environments. And yet it has taken the ruling of new legislation due to come into effect, to make manufacturers start to think about changing their formulas.

Phosphates are used in plant foods and lawn preparations to make them green up and grow faster, and they have that same kind of effect within a water source, causing blue green algae to flourish in local streams and ponds, starving aquatic life of oxygen.

Water treatment plants have not been able to remove phosphates easily from the dirty water going through the drainage systems. So it has taken strong legislation coming into effect to force manufacturers to start switching over to other chemical surfactants in their washing formulas to prevent such a huge quantity of phosphates getting into the water supply.

"Green formulas are no longer the poor wash relation and I'd challenge anyone to try Distinctive and think it gave substandard results on wash performance." said Louise.

On their website and within marketing material they are honest about a small chemical element within their fragrance that isnt fully biodegradable. "But we meet with the regulations," says Louise. "If you wanted to be 100% green, the products you choose around the home and for your hair and skin would need to be devoid of any fragrance whatsoever. The benefits of improved state of mind and wellbeing that we attribute to well made fragrances are incredible and an important part of life that most people wouldnt want to live without. We would certainly miss the seductive smell of a good perfume or aftershave."

Earth Day aside, from January in 2015 there is a very serious aspect to legal requirements for Laundry. 2015 laundry regulations state that all washing formulas must be biodegradable and phosphate free. Phosphate reduction laws are actually in place from June of this summer.

Said Louise on behalf of Distinctive Wash Ltd, "To save us the hassle of recreating our formula, (and because we should all be responsible in our choices towards caring for the environment) we have started with the best possible formula we could source. Knowing legislation was coming into force was a big factor behind our original brief with manufacturing partner Ideal in Northamptonshire."

Distinctives protease enzyme is specially designed to be activated at cool wash temperatures and quick wash programs, not only saving time as the water doesnt need as long to heat up, but also keeping energy costs down, which is always a good thing. "Enzymes are even effective at removing biological stains like blood at temperatures this low," says Louise. "So other than an occasional high wash program to clean your machine washing at temperatures shouldn't be necessary."

By providing a product without optical brighteners, they are also ensuring another unnecessary chemical isn't in the product. Optical brighteners are well known to aggravate sensitive skin conditions such as eczema and also cause an irreversible build up which appears as fading, on coloured clothing.

A revolutionary weight loss protocol determining your metabolic blueprint, which creates fat loss of a pound per day, is now being offered at Rejuv, Harley Street

(PRWEB UK) 16 April 2013

Dr Simone Laubscher PhD from Rejuv on Harley Street has developed her own revolutionary fat loss protocol, bespoke to patients needs. Slow metabolisms can now be a thing of the past so weight is lost and kept off without having to starve to stay slim.

Dr Simone has been treating patients for over 15 years and has a Bachelors in Science and Nutrition, a Masters in nutrition and metabolic/eating disorders and a PhD in Oxidative Stress. After struggling with her own eating disorders in her twenty's and ending up with a very slow metabolism, Dr Simone devised this protocol to help other patients who for whatever reason also have a slow metabolism.

A patient's unique metabolic blueprint must be determined so that the unique ratio of fats: carbohydrates : proteins are mixed at each meal bringing about the specific metabolic boost that each patient requires. The correct food types also play a major role so that the body is able to easily enter into fat burning. To determine a patient's metabolic blueprint each patient will complete a five page questionnaire and have a blood and urine test to collect the answers to Dr Simone's fifteen bio-markers. A bespoke plan will then be devised allowing phase one to be completed so weight loss occurs and then phase two a maintenance plan. 'Anyone can lose weight says Dr Simone, the key is allowing the patient to live at their desired results long term'. Dr Simone's protocol is also wonderful at re-shaping figures, leveling out the pear or apple shape being able to target the abnormal fat stores laid down in the body.

'I struggled with my weight all my life but now Dr Simone has re-set my metabolism and not only have I lost over four stone I am also free to enjoy my new lifestyle and literally have my cake and eat it too' Elizabeth from Surrey.

The latest UK statistics are very alarming with just over a quarter of adults in England now confirmed to be obese. Three out of ten children aged two to fifteen in England are overweight or obese and by 2050, it is estimated that half of the population in England will be obese (Source BMA.org). These statistics confirm the need to address a patient's metabolic function in addition to a healthy lifestyle for many do cut down on the calories and exercise regularly only to be disappointed with slow and minimal results, often leading a patient to give up and never reaching their wellness goals.

Dr Simone at Rejuv is all about fast tracking a patient so that they can have the metabolism they deserve allowing them to live in vibrant health and not just visit after some fad or crash diet!

Globally more people die from being overweight and obese than from being underweight warns The Surrey Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy

Wallington, Surrey (PRWEB UK) 12 May 2013

According to a report published by The European Association for the Study of Obesity in April, approximately 65% of the worlds population inhabit countries where being overweight and obese kills more people than being underweight.

According to the World Health Organisation the prevalence of obesity has tripled since the 1980s. In many European countries 50% of the population are overweight or obese. In the UK the latest figures from The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges show that two thirds of adults are obese or overweight (BMI over 25).

In 2008, globally 1.5 billion adults aged 20 and over, were overweight with an estimated 500 million adults worldwide being obese (over 200 million men and nearly 300 million women).

The World Health Organisation has confirmed obesity as the largest health problem globally in adults, which is becoming a more serious problem than malnutrition across the globe.

In the majority of European countries, being overweight and obese are thought to be responsible for about 80% of cases of type 2 diabetes, 35% of heart disease and 55% of high blood pressure among adults.

Although this problem seems to be growing rapidly there is a simple solution. For the majority of people losing weight is about behavioural change and the reason most people seem unable to achieve this is that they cannot maintain the behavioural change long term.

Hypnotherapy for weight loss not only helps people make the initial behavioural change but, as a rule, the changes that are made tend to be long lasting. This allows weight loss clients to get used to the new behaviours and after a while they become normal behaviours.

Weight loss hypnotherapy is about creating new behaviours that fit in with the lifestyle of the client. Exercising and salads dont suit everyone and the hypnotherapy weight loss programme will adapt, depending on the needs of the client.

Paul White, the behavioural change specialist at the Surrey Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy and Chairman of the National Council for Hypnotherapy, said Many people we see want to lose weight without committing large chunks of their time to exercising. Its important to understand that exercise is important for health. However, it is not required to lose weight. We would always encourage our clients to exercise but for the vast majority of our clients, they either dont have the time or they are too heavy to exercise easily.

At the Surrey Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy in Surrey they seek to change their clients relationship with food. The hypnotherapist will work with the client to change the way they view food, even the way they think about food, so the client eats to live, rather than lives to eat. By doing so they remove the guilt, reduce consumption and feel happier around food.

Whilst running their weight loss programme at the Institute, they have come across virtually every type of inappropriate behaviour around food and have strategies to deal with all of them. The great thing about using something like hypnotherapy is that it does not matter if the client is dieting or not, as it works on the behaviours and when they change, the food consumption changes naturally.

By seeking to replace any negative thoughts or behaviours with positive ones, clients begin to see changes with eating habits and improvements in feelings of well being. They will then not only feel better about the food they consume, but also begin to feel happier.

Paul White has been Chairman of the National Council for Hypnotherapy for five years. He has been a Director of The Surrey Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy for 11 years. He has a special interest in weight control and problem behaviours (addictions).
