Gloucestershire Dentists Warn of the Acid Dangers Hidden in Water How Drinking Water can Cause Tooth Decay

cheltenham (PRWEB UK) 1 May 2013

It is widely understood that sugary food and drinks can cause dental decay. Sugar in the mouth is broken down by bacteria to create acid which is washed around the mouth by saliva. The acid can attack tooth enamel, gradually dissolving the minerals on the surface of the tooth and allowing decay and cavities to appear.

However, it is not as simple as switching from sweet drinks to water. Dental experts at ICC Implant & Ceramic Dental Studios are warning that not all water has a neutral pH. Certain brands of water have actually been shown to have a low pH, meaning that you could essentially be drinking a dilute form of acid and lowering the pH in the mouth to create an environment where teeth are more at risk of erosion.

The pH scale measures acidity/alkalinity on a scale from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral, over 7 is alkaline and less than 7 is acidic; though it is not linear, so each pH value below 7 has ten times the acidity than the number above it. Tooth enamel can erode if acidity levels fall to 5.5 pH or below; while delicate root surfaces of teeth can be damaged from 6.5 pH.

Yet as certain brands of water have been shown to have pH levels as low as 4-5, ICC Implant & Ceramic Dental Studios are warning patients to be vigilant in choosing their bottled water.

A spokesperson explained:

We are seeing patients who do not understand how their teeth have become decayed when they have avoided sweets and sugary drinks. Yet drinking water with a low pH is like drinking a dilute acid and can quickly create a climate ideal for tooth decay.

We advise patients to choose carefully what they drink and check the pH levels on bottled water in particular. Depending on the soil type, tap water is less acid than bottled in many cases.

In addition, following basic good dental care advice is vital brushing teeth twice a day, avoiding snacking and sweet drinks between meals and having regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments, so that any early signs of dental decay can be treated quickly and stop the situation deteriorating. Prevention is better and cheaper than treatment and early intervention is better than waiting as dental decay is progressive and will only worsen with time.

We also advise patients to be aware that some people are simply more generally inclined to a lower pH. Indicators of this are conditions such as skin irritations, stomach acid, infections, headaches or mouth ulcers. These people are likely to have more acidic mouth environments and are therefore especially prone to dental issues.

However, the team are keen to reassure people that it is never too late to seek treatment and they should not be embarrassed to seek attention at any stage. ICC Implant & Ceramic Dental Studios see many patients who have neglected their dental health and require significant dental restoration. They also provide high quality dental hygiene to maintain good oral care and prevent further problems.

Their Gloucestershire centre sees patients from all over the country, who can receive extensive treatment in just one day thanks to their on-site laboratory based in the heart of the Cotswolds.

They also offer a range of increasingly popular cosmetic dentistry procedures including veneers and enamel. However, cosmetic dentistry is never at the expense of maintaining the best possible tooth structure and whatever treatment patients need, the aesthetic result is considered alongside functionality and health issues.

Facial Fillers a Ticking Time Bomb? Skinspirations Discloses Dangers of Botched Fillers

TAMPA BAY, FL (PRWEB) May 13, 2013

As Americans increasingly put importance on outer appearances, the lengths to which people go to retain their youth seem endless. Dermal fillers have seen a rise in complicationsa reported 84% of people who suffered complications from permanent dermal fillers required corrective surgery or were deemed untreatable due to the damage caused (1). Skinspirations, a non-surgical cosmetic center in Tampa Bay, warns of the dangers of botched dermal filler injections and the complications that may arise.

Dermal fillers, used to rejuvenate the skin, have grown in popularity due in large part to their effectiveness, versatility and accessibility. Doctors cite unqualified practitioners and a lack of regulation of fillers as reasons for the increase in complications. Because unskilled individuals typically perform the procedures at a low price, many people turn to these alternate avenues to achieve their goals, resulting in dire consequences.

Case in Point:

Rajee Narinesingh says her face was ruined after receiving botched facial injections from an unqualified fake doctor, Oneal Ron Morris. Narinesingh admitted that she initially turned to Morris because she did not have the money to pay a licensed plastic surgeon. Narinesingh was been left with misshapen cheeks and chin, as well as a ballooning upper lip, after the backroom beauty treatment. Narinesinghs face was injected with a toxic mixture of cement and tire sealant, leaving her with life-threatening injuries that required several surgeries and round-the-clock care (2).

Skinspirations warns that although dermal fillers are believed to be safe, the injectionsif administered incorrectlycan lead to an array of issues such as above. Complications of botched fillers can include:

Infections at the injection site;

Permanent scarring;

Prolonged swelling and bruising; and

Vision impairment.

Dr. Cynthia Elliott, owner of Skinspirations, is a former emergency and trauma doctor who has taught fellow physicians in Tampa Bay how to properly administer fillers for the last several years. With a practice devoted exclusively to cosmetic and laser procedures, Dr. Elliott is often sought out to correct the effects of botched filler treatments. She offers three tips to consider when choosing a practitioner:

1.Injecting fillers is a skilled procedure, and should be administered only by a trained, qualified practicioner.

2.Look for clinics and practitioners whose main focus is aesthetic or surgical procedures. Look for someone who has years of experience with the procedure youre looking to have done.

3.Most reputable clinics offer free consultations to those who are curious about cosmetic procedures. This is a great opportunity to check out the premises and ask the following important questions:

a.What are your qualifications? (Look for a board-certified practitioner.)

b.How many times have you done this procedure? (There is no ideal number, but you at least want to hear that the physician does the procedure several times a day.

c.What are the potential complications and risks? (Its a huge red flag if youre promised a risk-free procedurethere is no such thing.)

d.Are follow-up services offered? (Its good practice for the doctor to follow up with you at two weeks to make sure that the result is the one you were looking for, and to give you a top up if any areas were missed.)

e.Ensure that the fillers contain only FDA-approved materials. (Approved materials include collagen, hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxyapatite, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), and Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) beads.)

Dr. Elliott has the experience and expertise to perform a wide array of non-surgical procedures in her Tampa Bay office. Despite the benefits of permanent fillers, Dr. Elliott wants patients to understand that there are still risks involved.

The ramifications of botched fillers are serious, and those seeking fillers should do thorough research before committing to the injections, commented Dr. Elliott. Dermal fillers should only be administered by a licensed practitioner.

Miami, FL (PRWEB) February 19, 2013

As Spring fast approaches most of the US many households are preparing for spring cleaning by stocking up on essential cleaning products to remove winter's dust. Although many families see cleaning a home as a safe way to keep their family healthy, they are unaware of the dangers that industrial chemicals are bringing into their homes.

An article from a Green House Eco-Cleaning said the average American home contains gallons of toxic chemicals.

"If your cleaning products are claiming to have industrial strength, instead of taking that as a reason to purchase, you should probably take this as a cue that maybe the chemicals inside are more than what your family needs," says Fernando Perez, a spokesperson for DistinctBright.

keep out of reach of children, is a standard warning on labels, but we often neglect the fact that if a substance is not safe for children to be around, it is also dangerous for adults.

The biggest danger while cleaning using harsh chemicals is the direct contact chemical fumes have with the respiratory system. Through prolonged exposure to these products, the toxin levels in the body can increase until a real health problem is present. Shortness of breathe, brain damage, desensitized smell, and sinus issues are common issues associated with inhaling the fumes from household cleaners.

So, what toxins are often present in household cleaners?

Could be neurotoxins, endocrine disrupters and carcinogens among others.

Along with the health problems mentioned above, common household cleaners have also been linked to causing conditions such as skin irritations, causing weakened nails, hair, and cell regeneration.

Understanding the health risks associated with cleaning chemicals is the first step in safe-gaurding you and your family. The best way to rid your home of harmful chemicals is to choose all natural products and organic cleaning services to clean your home.

Fernando Perez, a spokesperson for DistinctBright, responds to the article. It is important to read carefully the ingredients on the label and select house cleaners that contain no ammonia and harmful chemicals.
