Kaori Kelly Received Coveted Pennsylvania Direct Support Professional Award from ANCOR

Harrisburg, PA (PRWEB) April 30, 2013

Keystone Human Services is proud to announce that Kaori Kelly, a Direct Support Professional (DSP) for Keystone Human Services Intellectual Disabilities Services, received the Pennsylvania Direct Support Professional Award from ANCOR (American Network of Community Options and Resources).

This annual award is given to a DSP who has been exemplary in their service to the mission of the nominating agency. The award was presented at the ANCOR Annual Conference in Washington D.C. on April 30, 2013. ANCOR is the national association of residential service providers who benefit people with intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, autism, and those experiencing mental illness.

Kaori Kelly was nominated by Keystone Human Services Intellectual Disabilities Services in recognition of her dedication to supporting people to maximize their abilities and reach their employment goals. By getting to know the persons interests and abilities, Kelly finds the best employment fit for them.

After learning of one womans interest in working, Kelly first created volunteer opportunities for her. Kelly recognized that the woman loved colors and animals, and she identified a family-owned pet food business that had a part-time job available. Both the products and the packaging are colorful, making this a great match for her.

In order to learn more about making friends and staying healthy, Kelly assisted the woman to gain a gym membership and learn to have conversations with other gym members. Friendships developed, and most recently, she acquired a second part-time job at the gym. She now receives a paycheck for doing what she already loves to do. The real paycheck, though, is the quality of life she has and the pride she feels in being employed.

KHS thanks Kelly for her ability to observe and listen to the needs and wishes of the person she supports. She has been instrumental in making this young womans life fulfilled.

Kelly represents the true meaning of advancing the human spirit as she supports people to reach their goals for employment.

Ledyard Elementary Schools Awarded HealthierUS School Challenge Bronze Level Distinction

Islandia, NY (PRWEB) May 01, 2013

The USDA established the HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) to recognize schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that create healthier school environments by providing nutrition education, nutritious food and beverage choices, physical education and opportunities for physical activity. This initiative is a main component in First Lady Michelle Obamas Lets Move! campaign, an effort to end the childhood obesity epidemic.

This April, four Ledyard elementary schools were awarded the HUSSC Bronze Level distinction: Gales Ferry School, Gallup Hill School, Juliet W. Long School and Ledyard Center School.

This recognition is the product of a joint effort between Ledyard Public Schools and Whitsons School Nutrition, food service providers at Ledyard Public Schools. Darlene McCarthy, Food Service Director at Ledyard; Anne Hogsten, Principal at Gales Ferry and Juliet W. Long schools; Dr. Susan Nash-Ditzel, Principal at Ledyard Center school; and Dr. Pam Austen, Principal at Gallup Hill school, were the main drivers of this initiative along with a review team composed of a cross section of the Ledyard school community: members of the Parent Teacher Organization, teachers and administrators.

In order to qualify for the Bronze award, the elementary schools had to demonstrate they meet all the HUSSC nutritional requirements on an on-going basis, serving a variety of healthier food that appeal to the students, planning meals that emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products; and that include lean proteins and foods low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars. Furthermore, the schools were required to prove their compliance with the physical activity and nutrition education criteria of the HUSSC according to age group.

With this award, Ledyard Public Schools reiterates its commitment to promoting a healthy school environment for its students. According to Michael Graner, Superintendent at Ledyard Public Schools, This award is a recognition of the work we have been doing in collaboration with Whitsons to improve the nutritional value of the school meals. The award also acknowledges the efforts of the school district staff to promote wellness activities at all of our schools as part of a balanced healthy lifestyle.

The award ceremony took place on April 26th. A representative from the USDA presented a HealthierUS Bronze School banner, a commemorative plaque and a check for $ 500 to the schools.

About 9021Pho:

9021Pho was born out of a unique partnership in Beverly Hills, California, where the celebrated Vietnamese Master Chef Kimmy Tang assumed management of a local restaurant transforming it into a fresh, healthy dining experience combined with her innovative French and Asian cuisine.

Born and raised in Saigon, Chef Kimmy learned at an early age how to prepare traditional Vietnamese dishes by watching the family chef prepare sumptuous meals. Her culinary passion broadened when she and her family moved to California where she began working in Chinese and Japanese restaurants. With her valuable skills, Chef Kimmy soon opened her own fine dining restaurant and received celebrated acclaim by the L.A. Times, Los Angeles Magazine and many other publications.

Longing to explore other cultures and perfect her culinary skills, Chef Kimmy sold her restaurant and started an international journey to study the traditional recipes of the world including France and her home country Vietnam. Copy Doctor Launches Kids Meals Food Drive

Houston, TX (PRWEB) May 01, 2013

Copy Doctor is teaming up with Kids Meals and will sponsor a food drive during the month of May. Donations received through the drive will help Kids Meals, Texas only meals-on-wheels program for children, serve healthy lunches to over 1700 hungry pre-school aged children living in poverty.

It is sometimes difficult to believe that hunger exists right here in the Houston area. Most people think of hunger in terms of famine, or major tragedies, but not as something that affects children everyday in our own community, said Don Sowa, President of Copy Doctor. Anything we can do to help our neighbors is not only our responsibility, but our privilege. We hope our customers and business friends will join us in supporting this great organization.

Texas, unfortunately, is number one in our nation for food insecurity for children, according to The Houston Food Bank. In Harris County, there is an estimated poverty rate of 16.4% for individuals, but children under five are disproportionately affected by a poverty rate of 25.7% ...at 28.2% - 1,871,600 children are living in food insecure homes. (CHILDREN AT RISK, Growing up in Houston 2008-2010).

Kids' Meals is a non-profit, community-based organization, which provides and delivers nutritious meals, free of cost to the families, Monday through Friday, year-round. In the summer months the number of children serviced jumps from 1700 to 3400 a day. Kids Meals is the only organization that is bridging the gap for hungry preschool aged children; the missing piece for children ages 1-5 who are too old for services from organizations such as WIC and not yet old enough to receive free breakfast and lunch in school.

Non perishable food donations may be dropped off at both Copy Doctor locations, 3814 Bissonnet Street, Houston, TX 77005, or 1101 S. Friendswood Drive, Friendswood, TX 77546 during the month of May.

Horsefinder Announces Top Tips to Combat Equine Obesity

Taunton, Somerset (PRWEB UK) 1 May 2013

With milder weather and typical British rain showers, the month of April has seen a fast growth of grass. The abundance of fresh grass, which is high in fructans and sugars, is irresistible to horses and ponies but can pose a risk to those prone to laminitis and obesity.

Horsefinder, the website where horse owners can buy and sell horses, has teamed up with expert horse nutritionist, Brinicombe Equine, to produce a how-to of top tips to guide horse owners throughout the summer months. Brinicombe's equine development manager says: Equine obesity has fatal consequences and causes severe, debilitating and painful symptoms including the onset of laminitis. It is one of the most common causes of fatalities out of any equine disease in the UK yet it is 100 per cent preventable.

To help a horse reach, and stay, a healthy weight, Horsefinder and Brinicombe Equine advise the following prevention methods:

Exercise a horse regularly - this will help weight come off and stay off.

Monitor grass intake and gradually reduce grazing.

Double bag hay with two hay nets this will reduce the speed and amount of food a horse consumes.

Soak hay this reduces the calorie content through a reduction of water-soluble carbohydrates.

Spilt any meals into smaller meals throughout the day.

Tie hay nets in various locations around the yard this will encourage a horse to move around and burn calories.

Place some large, smooth pebbles into a horses feed this will slow down the eating time as they navigate the pebbles.

Keep a horse occupied by hanging up vegetables in the stable; putting chopped vegetables into a foraging ball; or placing apples in a bucket of water for apple

Yumi Media Comments on the Shift in the Vegetarian Image in America

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) May 01, 2013

On May 1, Yumi Media, a food website devoted to delivering the latest and greatest in food news, recipes, and products to incorporate into your own healthy lifestyle, responds to an article about the image of vegetarians in America today.

According to an article in the Lansing State Journal, vegetarian options have progressed into the mainstream over the years. There is no longer just one image of a vegetarian, and eating a vegetarian meal isnt associated with an agenda and an ideology.

While meals of the 1970s and 1980s were very meat-centric, our meals today have shifted as a result of several societal changes, such as the influence of vegetarian chefs and the introduction and popularization of international cuisines centered around vegetables. Many Americans are also concerned about the quality of meat as well as its price in this economy, and so they choose vegetarian options instead.

Yumi Media representative Justin Maas says that these changes in the perception of vegetarians in our society is a good thing. A person needs to have a balanced diet, and if the meal is always about meat, thats not going to happen. Its great that being a vegetarian is no longer associated with one identity, because all different types of people can benefit from a vegetarian lifestyle. And if theyre feeling that theyre not getting enough protein, they can always add a substitute like Quorn to their diets.

Yumi Media is a food website devoted to delivering the latest and greatest in food news, recipes, and products to incorporate into your own healthy lifestyle. Launched in 2012, Yumi Media was founded by a group of friends as a way to explore their mutual love of food while sharing that love with the community at large. Whether youre looking for something cutting-edge, like Quorn, or comfort food like mom used to make or something in between, Yumi Media is your one-stop resource.

Juices May Do More Harm Than Good For Kids Teeth Says Keith Ostrosky

St. Paul, Minnesota (PRWEB) May 01, 2013

Keith Ostrosky, a dentist who regularly cares for young patients, has released a statement to the press regarding a new study showing the damage that too much fruit juice can do to young teeth. The British Dental Association is advising parents to limit the amount of healthy juices and smoothies that they are feeding their children. While parents may think that these drinks are healthy since they contain fruit, excess consumption can end up causing frequent cavities and tooth decay.

Findings show that roughly 25 percent of toddlers regularly drink fruit juice, and two-thirds eat sugar-filled snacks and treats. While unsweetened fruit juice contributes to a portion of a childs dietary requirements for fruit, crushing the fruit causes it to release sugars that can cause damage to teeth. Instead, it is advisable to eat the fruit whole.

Keith Ostrosky comments on these findings stating, Its a tricky situation because many parents just want to make sure that their child is getting the fruits he or she needs to develop properly. However, many kids are resistant to eating fruit whole, so parents try to compensate by blending the fruit or providing juice. While the boy or girl is getting nutrients this way, theres also an increased risk for tooth decay. Children can still consume fruit juice, but parents should put a limit on how much their son or daughter drinks each day.

Dr. Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation states, Fruit juices are becoming increasingly popular and the fruit content can make them seem like a good idea. However, they contain very high levels of sugar and acid, and can do a lot of damage to the teeth. At a young age it is unrealistic to remove sweet foods and drinks altogether from a childs diet. To combat this, it is important to try to keep their consumption to mealtimes, and ensure they only drink water or milk between meals.

Dr. Carter explains that smoothies are damaging to teeth because they were concentrated and are sipped, therefore allowing the sugars to stick to teeth. He explains that the consumption of these fruity beverages is done with health in mind, but can often cause damage in the long run.

Findings from 2008 show that 30 percent of five-year-old children living in England had experienced tooth decay. Research also shows that a small bottle of orange juice from popular British retailer Pret a Manger contained as much sugar as 13 cookies. A small bottle of Innocent smoothie had as much sugar as three-and-a-half Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

Keith Ostrosky states, Its important that parents really take a look at the nutrition facts when theyre pouring these beverages and serving these snacks to their children. While a product may have healthy ingredients, that doesnt mean that the item is actually good for teeth. Keith Ostrosky advises that increased sugar intake is not just bad for the teeth; it can lead to other health problems later in life.

Fresh Healthy Vending Pledges $1,000,000 in Grants

(PRWEB) May 01, 2013

Fresh Healthy Vending, the Nations largest healthy vending company has dedicated $ 1,000,000 in grants to qualified locations that choose to provide a healthy vending option. On behalf of its huge network of Franchisees, the Fresh and Healthy Vending Initiative was founded to help communities combat the junk food and obesity epidemic. To encourage communities to get on the bandwagon, the company created FreshandHealthy.org. The website is specifically designed to encourage eligible locations such as schools, YMCAs and businesses to sign up for a free healthy vending machine. The company also offers additional monthly financial incentives to install the healthy machines that provide nutritious food and beverage choices.

Fresh Healthy Vendings Chief Wellness Advocate, Michelle Valency says, We approach each location with the same simple set of requests. 1. Do your employees, students, customers deserve a healthy choice when it comes to snacking? 2. Are you ready to take the initiative and help us combat the obesity epidemic that plagues our nation? 3. Would you be prepared at the very least to let us place a healthy vending machine next to the machines you already have that offer junk, giving people the option to choose?

Vending machine snacks and beverages constitute a significant portion of the average Americans diet. At school, work, or in the community, the convenience of quick and affordable sustenance through traditional vending is often within reach and dependence has increased in recent years. The Fresh and Healthy Vending was established to lessen the amount of harmful foods available and provide healthy substitutes.

In less than 2 years, FreshandHealthy.Org has been succesfull in placing 1300 Fresh Healthy Vending machines in schools across 46 states. The initiative claims a further 900 Fresh Healthy Vending machines have been installed in various businesses, retailers and community centers such as YMCAs, JCCs and Boys and Girls Clubs. The company has also donated over $ 300,000 in incentives to date not including the commission checks its franchisees pay to the locations each month. We believe healthy choices dont have to be an inconvenience, all we are looking for is like-minded decision makers to take some iniative in the locations we target says Valency.

The bad news: obese and overweight children are at risk for serious health problems.

Diabetes is on the rise. The rise in childhood obesity is linked to a dramatic rise in the number of children that are suffering from type 2 diabetes. African-American and Hispanic children are developing type 2 diabetes at a much higher rate than their Caucasian peers; almost half are at risk of developing diabetes.

Asthma risk is higher than ever. There may be a link between the rise in childhood obesity and the rise in childhood asthma. Extra weight can make it hard to breathe and can inflame the respiratory tract. Children with serious asthma are more likely to be overweight.

Increased risk of heart failure. Being overweight or out-of-shape makes the heart work harder. Overweight children are more likely to grow up to be overweight adults and more likely to develop heart problems.

Access to healthy food and physical activity is disappearing. Poor nutrition is part of daily life: only about 20 percent of high school seniors report eating fruit and green vegetables five or more times a day.

Unregulated nutrition: foods offered in school vending machines often have little nutritional value and can be loaded with fats, sugars, salt and calories.

Less physical education: 92% of elementary schools do not have daily physical education classes year-round.

The good news: Fresh Healthy Vending, along with their franchisees, is fighting the obesity epidemic one healthy, delicious, convenient snack at a time via its huge Franchise network.

Fresh Healthy Vending machines are in thousands of locations throughout the country providing healthy snack food and beverage choices. Healthy kids are the future, keeping minds and bodies in better shape are part of the directives for Fresh Healthy Vending, the first and largest franchisor of healthy vending machines. Fresh Healthy Vendings quest is to help Americans become healthier by providing more nutritious and wholesome snacks and drinks purchased through vending machines.

Recent studies have found that supplementing with the probiotics Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium animalis, Lactococcus lactis, and Streptococcus thermophilus for four weeks, subjects demonstrated improved processing activity in the area of the brain responsible for controlling emotion, sensation and anxiety.

The article also describes a clear connection between the enteric nervous system, located around the digestive system, and the central nervous system; this finding opens new possibilities to the connection between how probiotics may be effective in treating anxiety. Supplementing with the Lactobacillus strain of probiotics also supports the production of the neurotransmitter GABA, the primary neurotransmitter responsible for controlling behavior and mood.

Probiotic supplements may even reduce the production of stress hormones in the body, thus further reducing risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, digestive issues, depression and anxiety.

Lean On Life Cautions Against Stress and its Effects on Weight Gain

TORONTO, ON (PRWEB) May 01, 2013

Lean On Life, a leading healthy lifestyle website with the latest on weight loss, nutrition, and fitness is cautioning against stress and its long-term effects on weight gain.

As Lean On Life reports in its article (http://www.leanonlife.com/why-stress-is-sabotaging-your-weight-loss-efforts/), the effects of stress on the body can have damaging long-term health effects, including weight gain.

Lean On Life cites a study released by the American Psychological Association in 2012 in which 1800 participants were surveyed to see how they dealt with stressful situations, and its effects on their eating behaviors. The study found that 43 percent of respondents over-ate unhealthy foods in response to stressful situations. These results suggest that we need better coping mechanisms for stress.

As Lean On Life reports, stress leads to a release of cortisol and adrenaline in the human body. Adrenaline delivers the instant energy in a fight-or-flight situation, while cortisol impacts the body an hour after the initial stressor, and is what dramatically boosts a persons appetite after stressful situations.

Furthermore, cortisol can influence our brains to find more pleasure in certain unhealthy foods. It can also lead the brain to confuse hunger and satiety signals, which can cause us to feel hungry and crave more food even after weve eaten.

Michelle Schiffman, nutritionist at Lean On Life, believes that we must learn to effectively deal with stress because there are so many stressors in our daily lives. Were no longer living in a time when stress was outrunning a predator, or going out on a hunt to feed your tribe, she says. Today, were stressed by oversleeping, traffic, emails basically every minute detail of our daily lives.

Schiffman explains that these stressors lead us to overeat regularly, and to overeat the unhealthy foods that give us the most pleasure. To combat this issue, she suggests taking a proactive approach to stress and to make sure we take control of our habits. Its really important to identify potential stress triggers that lead to comfort eating. If we can identify whether were eating because were hungry or because were stressed, thats a great first step, she says.

Ultimately, Lean On Life encourages everyone to try and reduce the stressors in their lives, and to apply relaxation strategies instead. Doing so, and being more mindful of eating as a result of stress, can help us avoid unnecessary weight gain.

Lean On Life is a healthy lifestyle website that provides expert-driven knowledge from doctors, nutritionists, fitness trainers and life coaches. The site takes a hands-on approach to making weight-loss, healthy eating and fitness a simple achievable lifestyle change.

Probiotic Action Shares Insight for Parents on How to Treat Pre-Teen Acne without Chemicals

Miami, FL (PRWEB) May 01, 2013

Recently, The Charlotte Observer met with a local pediatrician to give advice on how to treat pre-teen acne. The article stated several facts about acne, including the factors that cause it in developing children and adolescents.

In light of the increase of pre-teen acne, Probiotic Action shares new insight on how to treat pre-teen acne without the use of antibiotics or harsh chemicals.

For growing bodies, the introduction of chemicals like antibiotics and steroids, which are commonly prescribed to treat acne, can be a threat to the quickly changing hormone levels, and interact negatively with an adolescents body.

Probiotic Action spokesman Fernando Perez shares insight on how to treat pre-teen acne without harsh chemicals that may interfere with the growing body of young adults.

While probiotic action is well known as the best acne treatment, many use it as an adult acne treatment alone. Our formula is different than any other acne cream in that it uses all natural bacteria to help balance the skins condition, rather than putting harsh chemicals into the body. Using a natural cleanser and acne cream made from probiotics, and educating children on where acne comes from, can help them emotionally and physically treat the effects of acne, says Perez.

Perez added that for many parents, the idea of using antibiotics to treat acne brings a concern that they are endangering children by making them more susceptible to antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Further advice includes teaching children what soaps and foods may clog pores, along with education on proper diet and exercise may help reduce the severity of pre-teen acne.

For more information on Probiotic Action, visit their website or Facebook Page. Visit the Center for Disease Control for more information pertaining to antibiotic resistance.

Probiotic Action is an advanced acne treatment that uses Probiotics for acne containing the good bacteria that is naturally found on healthy human skin. By using probiotics, Probiotic Action is an effective treatment that restores the normal bacteria content on skin. Probiotic Action will successfully clear skin when used as an adult acne treatment while protecting skin against bad bacteria, free radicals, and pollutants*.

Marble Media LLCs Healthy for Mommies Blog Suggests Flipping Breakfast and Dinner for a Healthier Lifestyle

Fort Lee, New Jersey (PRWEB) May 01, 2013

The old wisdom that states a person should eat like a king in the morning, a prince in the afternoon, and a pauper at night was probably penned at a time when people rose early, worked hard, manual labor all day, and went to sleep with the sun. They needed their calories in the morning and midday to maintain energy, but a big meal at night may have interfered with getting a full nights sleep. In the latest blog from the HealthyForMommies.com website titled Should We Reverse out Mealtime Habits?, guest blogger Liz Ernst considers the benefits of returning to meal plans of the past in order to live healthier in the present.

Many cultures worldwide still eat their largest meals of the day in the morning and keep it light at night, according to Ernst. But the U.S. has been a culture of rushing out the door in the morning (often with little more than a cup of coffee and a toaster streudel for fuel) and eating lunch at their desks or on the run, making dinner the main meal of the day.

For the fitness-conscious, Ernst suggests reestablishing mealtime habits, even if it means getting up earlier in the morning to prepare a real meal, and hitting the sack after a light meal at night.

Eat your largest meal of the day at breakfast and fewer calories at lunch, and keep dinner time calories to a minimum, Ernst says. If you dont eat enough all day, youre going to stuff yourself at night and then go to bed with all those calories with no place to go but your fat stores.

The most challenging part of flipping eating patterns is adjusting to the physical changes that go with them, Ernst says. Ideally, people should be hungriest in the morning after waking from hours of slumber and not eating. This will set the stage for satisfying the bodys nutritional and caloric needs in the morning when the bodys metabolism is at its height, and facilitate burning off those calories throughout the course of a busy day.

At the end of a long work day, the bodys metabolism is at a low point, slowing down in preparation for sleep the worst possible time of day to load up on calories.

Try to reverse your eating times, consume your largest calorie intake in the morning and build to a very light dinner, Ernst says. Youll soon find its a naturally healthy way of eating, and it sets the stage for excellent lifelong eating habits in children as well.

Farmington, MI Dentist, Dr. Roman Shlafer, Expanded His Gum Disease Treatment Territory To Include Livonia, MI Gum Disease Patients

Farmington, MI (PRWEB) May 01, 2013

Roman Shlafer, DDS, PLLC, announces the expansion of his Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) gum disease treatment services to include residents of Livonia, MI. The advanced technology of the LANAP procedure is based on the PerioLase MVP-7 laser ability to perform surgery that traditionally required a scalpel and sutures. The advanced treatment process allows the dentist for gum disease treatment to remove diseased tissue in a manner that causes less bleeding, is minimally painful, and requires less down time.

Dr. Shlafer has joined the elite ranks of only one percent of dental professionals that offer the LANAP procedure for gum disease treatment. The procedure has been fully tested over a period of years and utilizes the PerioLase MVP-7 laser, which has been cleared by the FDA for dental procedure use. Patients undergoing the procedure generally experience little discomfort, and many can return to normal business the very same day.

The dentist for gum disease begins the procedure by determining the depth of the periodontal pockets between the gums and the teeth. The laser's pulsed light kills the bacteria and disintegrates the infected gum tissue. The laser is so selective that it can tell the difference between the infected tissue and the healthy tissue, so the healthy tissue stays intact. The laser promotes clotting so that the healthy tissue seals against the roots of the teeth, and sutures are not required to hold it in place for healing. The laser also utilizes bio stimulation to trigger the regenerative properties of the bone. This strengthens the teeth, promoting tooth retention.

More than 100 million adults in the United States suffer from gum disease. Gingivitis is the early stage of the disease and may include symptoms such as gums that are red and sensitive to hot and cold foods. At this stage of the disease, gum disease treatment is highly effective and can stop or even reverse its progress. The more advanced stage of the disease is called periodontitis, during which the supporting bones and fibers of the teeth are damaged. The LANAP treatment performed by an authorized dentist for gum disease can stop the progress of the disease and prevent tooth loss. Additional information about LANAP is available at http://www.detroitgumsurgery.com.

Dr. Roman Shlafer is a general practitioner offering patients personalized dental care for Farmington, Michigan since 1986. Dr. Shlafer received his DDS from the University Of Michigan School Of Dentistry, where he studied under top reconstructive and cosmetic dentists. He completed his graduate studies at the Center for Advanced Dental Studies. Dr. Shlafer is part of the American Dental Association and is part of one percent of dental professionals providing the most recent FDA cleared laser procedure for gum disease and periodontal treatment. 2013 NuvaRing Blood-Clotting Allegations Lawsuits Update: Resource4thePeople Reports New Case Filed, Others Dismissed

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) May 02, 2013

http://www.resource4thepeople.com/defectivedrugs/nuvaring.html

Resource4thePeople announced today its latest update of state and federal NuvaRing lawsuits alleging that women who used the popular contraceptive allegedly suffered serious blood-clotting side effects.

The latest developments involve the filing of an additional federal NuvaRing lawsuit* on behalf of a Georgia woman who is claiming in her lawsuit that she suffered an acute pulmonary embolism and the dismissal of several state court cases consolidated before a New Jersey judge.***

"It is to be expected that when there is litigation involving a substantial number of lawsuits involving allegations that a medical product, such as the NuvaRing birth control device, can cause serious side effects that new cases will be added and others will be dismissed," said Resource4thePeople.

"In response to the inquiries that we have been receiving from consumers about what legal options they may still have as this litigation moves forward we are now offering free consultations through our national network of attorneys to advise them about the merits of their cases."

In the Georgia case, the woman is alleging that her use of the NuvaRing caused her to suffer the embolism for which she had to be hospitalized and is continuing to seek treatment, according to the court file in the case.

It was not immediately clear from the filing whether her claims of life-threatening blood-clotting problems, which mirror those of over a thousand of other women whose cases have been consolidated before a federal judge in Missouri,** will be transferred to that multidistrict litigation.

Meanwhile, the New Jersey judge overseeing the multicounty litigation involving state cases*** there has dismissed seven cases, ruling that the plaintiffs were unable to provide sufficient evidence to support their claims, according to the court file.

The first bellwether trial selected from a pool of federal lawsuits** involving claims that the NuvaRing puts women at higher risk of suffering blood clots than other contraceptives has now been scheduled to begin in October.

The court records in the NuvaRing multi-district litigation show that the number of cases has increased to nearly 1,100** with the common allegations, according to the court files, involving claims that the NuvaRing puts women at higher risk of suffering a blood clot than with other birth control methods.

For example, said Resource4thePeople, another one of the most recent such NuvaRing lawsuits**** was filed recently by a Philadelphia woman who claims she suffered a venous sinus thrombosis and an intracranial hemorrhage last year.

In her lawsuit, the woman is claiming that those problems were caused by blood clotting caused by her use of a NuvaRing IUD over seven years. In her court filing, the woman said she has been forced to undergo a daily Coumadin regimen for her health problems, and suffers from depression and social anxiety.

Named as defendants are Organon Pharmaceuticals USA Inc., Organon International Inc. and Schering-Plough Corp., who, according to the court file, allegedly falsely marketed and sold the NuvaRing as a safe, efficient alternative to birth control pills.

As with the NuvaRing lawsuits in the multidistrict litigation, the Philadelphia woman claims that the defendants were negligent in not fully informing the public and health care professionals about increased risk of blood-clotting from the use of the contraceptive, according to the court filing.

The allegations cited in the multidistrict litigation claim that the NuvaRing, described by company officials as the first hormonal IUD, puts women at risk of suffering blood clots that can lead to life-threatening health problems because of the hormone mixture that prevents pregnancies.

The NuvaRing was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2001 after being created by Organon as a flexible IUD, or ring, hence the name. The IUD releases a low dose of etonogestrel and estrogen over three weeks, providing women the flexibility of a monthly contraceptive.

This flexibility was one of the marketing factors that made the NuvaRing what was described as an easy and healthy contraceptive choice to women who were not satisfied with the side effects caused by birth control pills and the necessity of taking them each day.

However, by 2011 the FDA released the findings of government research that put women who used the NuvaRing or other IUDs with a similar mixture of hormones at a 56 percent higher risk of suffering blood clotting that led to deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms than women on birth control pills.*****

Resource4thePeople also notes that NuvaRing has now posted warnings about the increased risks of suffering blood clots on the companys web site under the heading of IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION.*****

"Our legal consultations can spell out the options available to women who may have suffered health problems from blood clotting, such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolisms, strokes and heart attacks," said Resource4thePeople.

Legal assistance also is available to those who may have lost a loved one and may be seeking information about the facts involved in a wrongful death.

Multidistrict litigations are designated by a special panel of federal judges in cases in which large numbers of plaintiffs file similar allegations against common defendants in the interest of judicial efficiency and to avoid duplicative and conflicting legal proceedings.

In such litigations the judge oversees pre-trial evidence-gathering and legal requirements, schedules bellwether cases to allow both plaintiffs and defendants to weigh the strengths and weaknesses of their cases and presides over mediations and settlement discussions.

Princess Pansy really likes these. She will gently take them from a hand, but then she goes off and hides in the bedroom to eat it, and then comes back for more, said Mary Happy Blogger from Pi of Products. As soon as she sees me getting the treats she runs over and then sits in front of me waiting for one. She is so funny!

Healthy dog treats by Pupolicious are made in the U.S.A. and can be even more fun if a healthy snack such peanut butter is added to the dog treat mix.
